Winter jacket suggestions

Joelsim

Recommended Posts

Looking to get another winter jacket, for when it’s really cold. I currently have an Under Armour CGI Reactor jacket which is absolutely brilliant for this, so looking for something similar I guess.

I’m half tempted to just get another in a different colour, but wanted to ask the opinion of you fellas first.

I suspect I’ll be wearing it over two layers. The UA kept me warm even below freezing last winter, and it didn’t impinge on my swing at all.

Yes, it’s not for wet. I have waterproofs which I can layer up underneath for that. It’s just for cold, windy days when it’s frosty or dank.

Something with a bit of padding like the Oscar Jacobson Brick, that sort of thing.

How warm are you wanting to be? For the warmest, lightest golf jacket, it's the PING Norse, by far. Nothing else even comes remotely close to it. It's not for wet weather use, but is the warmest out of everything golf specific here in the US, Galvin Greens entire collection, Under Armour, etc (I've tried and/or own them all).

That’s probably a little too showy for me Mark.

Warmer than the Reactor? But yes, that’s exactly the type of jacket I’m looking for although would maybe want to also wear it to the pub on occasion so Ping isn’t ideal as a brand.

Yes. Makes the Reactor feel like a cheap windbreaker in terms of warmth. I posted in a few threads about it last winter, and several GWRX users bought it and said the same. Might be able to search my thread history and see those.

As far as styling, it's actually VERY lifestyle oriented and not golf specific looking at all. The branding is very small, and it's a black jacket with the quilted look that's been popular the past several seasons. And they are expanding the Norse offerings for this fall/winter adding even more styles to it.

I just ordered the Norse from my pro shop this week and it should arrive soon so i hope it turns out well. I purchased one toward the end of last season when they were pretty much sold out of most sizes and sent it back because it was a bit big. From what i remember in the short time I tried it on, it should be fine to wear around town. Very subtle styling

I 2nd this. Chris tried to convince me. I didn't believe him (stupid me.....this guy knows the outerwear market better than anyone I've ever seen). I bought one. He was 100% correct.

I know that this may sound weird, but look at a thinly insulated windproof/water resistant cycling jacket. I love the Windstopper membrane from Gore.

What is nice about the cycling jacket is that is less bulky than a normal jacket (more form fitting) yet not restrictive making it perfect for a golf swing. The more form fitting also mean more warmth per ounce. The tail of the jacket is a little longer cut than a normal jacket.

Some have removable sleeves. You can spend a lot of money or find some good deals.

Here is one that looks good and is well priced.

For what its worth, i have the Norse,.. dont put it on inside the house. You will steam. Dont wear it with anything over 60 degrees either.. 55 might even be too hot. 50 and lower is ideal. Dont worry about swing restriction either, there is none.

Theres a new Norse and Norse Fleece coming this year, if you want to wait for it.

Hey Chris have you tried the kjus Radiation jacket? if so would you still say the ping norse is better?in the market and tried the radiation jacket on in scotland and thought it was amazing. but also cost much more

I used a zero restriction Forbes pullover last winter and it was awesome. I wore it over a UA base layer and was comfortable down into the mid 30’s. It’s wind proof and filled with goose down which is an incredible insulator. I haven’t tried the ping Norse but I can’t imagine playing in anything colder than 35 or so and this was plenty warm enough for that temperature. Highly recommended.

I have tried the Radiation, and I returned it because it just isn't as warm as the Norse. Nothing I've tried is. I saw one review where the Norse was described as snow skit coat warmth in a standard golf jacket size. That's about as accurate as I've seen. It is WARM. And light. This IS coming from a very cold natured person (I truly hate temperatures below 80 degrees), and it's literally the first jacket I've ever found that I can wear outside at work (the course) or playing with JUST the Norse and a short sleeve polo in 45 degree weather and be completely warm.

Probably a discontinued item. I just looked on the Ping web site and it wasn’t listed.

Just have your pro shop with a Ping account order it for you. I did last week, I think it will come in next week. I think this years winter apparel from Ping is available starting in September.

It will probably show back up on the Ping site again soon

I can't swing in anything heavier than a zip up hoodie.

Which means the coldest I usually play is around freezing. Anything below 30º and a simple hoodie no longer cuts it.

Padded golf jackets these days aren’t heavy at all. My UA Reactor jacket is much lighter than a 1/4 zip. It’s also not cumbersome at all, swinging in it is no problem whatsoever.

If it's not for wet conditions try and find a Mizuno Windlite. You'll only need one layer underneath and it will not interfere with your swing.

I can't disagree with the gentlemen recommending the PING jacket b/c I've never worn it.

What I can tell you though is the Mizuno Windlite (original) is the best piece of golf clothing I've purchased in the last 10 years. Put a base layer on, and the Windlite, and you're warm into the 20* F range. If you walk the course at 40*-50* with the Windlite, you'll find yourself hot.

Can someone post a pic of the Mizuno Windlite you’re talking about please as there appear to be several different versions.
