Bandon Tee Recommendations

Recommended Posts

I've seen bits and pieces scattered in different threads, but it'd be interesting to see multiple opinions in a single place.

I'm making the trip to Bandon the first weekend in October, and am not sure where to tee it up. Where I live is a little above sea level, but not much. It probably ranges from 100-500ft. I've played at the coast plenty, and don't see a real discernible difference in distance. I'm probably a hair over 100mph with the driver, and my handicap is between 2 and 3. I play from 6800-7100 yards more often than not. I can imagine with the cooler temps, and at sea level, I'll see a significant drop in distance - more like my winter yardages here at home. I'm really torn between teeing it up from the black tees, and moving up to the green tees. It's not so much about "must tip it out" ego. It's a trip I may never take again, and I just want to play the tees that will give me the greatest variety and enjoyment.

For those who have made the trip to Bandon, can you share a little bit about your game, what tees you played, and whether you would make the same decision if you played again?

If you want them all in the same place, what was wrong with this already started thread with good information?

You can always ask a mod to delete this thread and bump that one instead.

If you won't be playing multiple rounds or getting back soon, play the blacks. Enjoy your trip.

Somehow missed that one. Thanks for the response.

My advice:

Wait and see what the weather (wind) is like before making a decision. I've played the back tees (plus the hidden tees!) at every course in heavy winds and it makes the courses feel 8000 yards long. That might be fun once or twice, but I go to Bandon to have fun, not to have my teeth kicked in.

I take a group every year where the handicaps range from +5-25 and we all play the same set of tees. It's mostly driver-wedge (although often the play is less than driver) for better players from the green tees if the wind is down, but it's always nothing but fun.

Not sure if this helps at all but I'm between +1 and a 1 and playing with another guy who's a 7. I'm starting at the greens for my trip in November and if it feels like the course is playing too short, I'll move back. I honestly doubt that I'll feel the need to move back.

Greens are a safe place to start but feel free to wait until you see the weather.

I’ll give this example, we were playing on a WINDY day, and I mean windy for Bandon, not windy for home. #9 (I believe) at Pac Dunes, buddy hits driver over the hill with a fade. Ball starts out on a good line then hits the wind, ball goes out 70 yards, ball slices 100 yards then starts coming back about 180-200 yards. So know he is in a fairway that we didn’t even know is there and has more yards than from the tee

Start green and adjust accordingly. Even some of the back tees make you choose between hitting driver or not. Generally, the courses are generous off the tee (with some notable exceptions on each course), but they are increasingly strategic as you get closer to the greens, especially Pacific and Trails. If you want to score, you've got to be approaching the hole from the right place in the fairway, and that place may be not very large.

I think most find that carry distances at Bandon are shorter. Folks who play in higher elevations and warmer temps find this to be more pronounced than others. Also, the tighter fescue lies tend to require a cleaner strike, which contributes to generally shorter carries. The good news is that the rollouts are usually (much) longer.

Having said all that, don't stress about any of it. Go play your game and have a blast (and don't forget to write up a trip report)!

"take that, you miserable little white swine!"
