Not always solely about speed, it can have a lot to do with your transition and how much control you want. I play to a 6, 103 ss, over 50 yrs old and still play X flex because of my transition and I want to hit fairways. Launch monitors have quantified it is still the best flex for me, maybe not for much longer but for now.....

Is it me or does it seem like there are a lot of people on GolfWRX who have x-stiff shafts in their clubs. I wonder if they really have the speed to play them or if it’s just believing you swing harder than you really do. Just curious if others thinking the same.

Yes I have one. Do i need it? No. Probably not. I'm not "competing" over here. But, my swing speed on launch monitors says I should use them as well as my transition. So, I bought into the play and am happy with my purchase.

Case and point, I easily felt the difference in swinging an R and A flex today while demoing some clubs. I might not feel that difference so readily with an S or an X flex but, oh well to that.

In conclusion, let them play their game. You play yours.

I agree, it’s not always about speed. I can only speak from my recent fitting experience and the first correlations factor for my success with the driver was shaft weight, then flex.

I learned a 75 gram vs 55 gram shaft in my driver and 3 wood gave me quality strikes (equated to more ball speed),

more control and lower spin rates enabling me to swing as hard as I want without losing it.

I have my driver in a stiff flex and tipped one inch for added measure, it’s just right for distance, control and feel; custom fit.

A handful of shafts nowadays are using high quality and mutilmaterial now that they don’t feel boardy at all.

It's partly stability.

My self, I prefer to go heavier over stiffer

I agree, I have a 110-112 driver swing speed. Yet, I play regular flex in my irons. I like to feel the load in my irons. Justin Thomas playe a stiff shaft in his driver.

I saw a video about the Titliest tour van and they covered product and what each player likes to play. The builder said, JT likes a stiff shaft in his driver so ye can feel the load.

I think you missunderstood. He said that he does not tip trim the shaft so it does not feel "as stiff" as the rest of the clubs. The guy swings out of his shoes and uses TX flex...

Nope, I couldn’t find the video. Here is an article though, paragraph 7 states he put back his Diamana 63S back in. It is tipped 1 1/2 inches though.

Thar article is from 2016... Look at the recent WITB here on WRX from 5 august 2018 and you will see a TX flex.

And? My post stated Justin Thomas played a stiff shaft in his driver! Which is true he did play a stiff shaft in his driver.

It is well know that amatuers play to stiff of a shaft than they should play.

Your post says he "playe" which to me meant plays since e and s is close on the keyboard. If it was played you meant, you are correct. He used to play Stiff flex.

LMAO, um the d is also next to the s on the keyboard! There isn’t much difference between playing a stiff shaft tipped 1 1/2 inches vs a X flex untipped. Proves either way he likes to feel the shaft load. Also, each manufacturers shaft flex varies, because of the torque rating. A stiff flex with a lower torque rating will feel more stout than a X flex with a higher torque rating.

My driver has been all over the place for a couple years. Stiff shaft, 105 SS. Could never ‘time’ the release well. It was either high right or low left hook shot. Put an X stiff in and it got rid of all that. I also feel like I can really get after it and know the clubhead will be where it needs to be.

Different take here:

Not enough players are using x-flex. Top 2 reasons I can think of:

1) off the rack are rarely X

2) the thought that X flex are only for pros/gorillas

I fell victim of both 1 and 2 before I joined WRX.

I think X can benefit a ton of players and swings, and the prevelance of players using them on this site is more to do with actually getting fit into the right shafts than ego-based.

I am in same boat , I recently turned 51 and just assumed it was time to go to stiff from x. My miss with the AD-TP 6s is block right and no rollout, actually hitting my 3wd within 5 yards of it. Hit the Hazardous yellow 76 6.5 yesterday and couldn't believe how much better it felt. Didn't even have to step on it. I was told on fitting SS was 105 but my driver carry is about 260-270 on the course . Now searching for an X in the 70gm range.Im not a fan of getting fit indoors, for now on its on the course so I can compare with the usual spot Im in.
