Do you choose your wedge(s) mainly for full swing or short game?

Here’s the issue I have.

I have two 56* wedges. One of them carries about 15 yards further than the other. But the other one is much better (for me) around the greens. The issue is, at my course, I have a lot of shots that fit into the range of the first one. So I’m left trying to take some off my gap wedge (quite a bit often times).

I usually end up with the “short game” wedge in the bag.

Anyone else run into this.

I’ve had similar issues with this spot in my bag and have also carries 2 sand wedges before.

Which one goes further the low or high bounce?

I went with the one that was better from 50 yards in. If I need to use it for a full shot I play it back in my stance a bit with the blade a bit de-lofted.

Never carried 2 wedges of the same loft. But I used to play 52,56,60 after my set pw which was 46. Recently switched to a set gw at 50 and 2 wedges 54 and 58. Before I was having to take some off my pw because the 52 carried only a few yards further then the 56 I had. Have much better gapping. And only use the 54 and 58 for high full shots and touch shots around the green and bunkers. Made the game much simpler only having 2 wedges.

My current set of wedges has a LW that's flexible (60 degree Vokey D grind) for 'most every kind of pitch or lofted shot around the greens other than bunkers, along with a SW that works great from bunkers (56 degree Vokey F grind) while also working OK for longer pitch/chip type shots.

But in the other wedge slot I really want to have it both ways. I tend to face a lot of 100-yard-ish full swing shots because I play from the senior tees (about 5,800 yards) but I also want a gap wedge that lets me play longish bump and run type shots from well off the green when there's plenty of green to work with. So I carry one of each.

My short-game gap wedge is a 52-degree Vokey F grind, lovely for those pitch-and-runs and also handy for 25+ yard bunker shots (which i rarely face BTW). And with a full swing it is serviceable but not my first choice.

But my full-swing gap wedge is the 50-degree wedge that matches my Ping G iron set (5-UW). The 50-degree Ping only goes about five yards farther than the Vokey 52 but I'll full of confidence with it. The "U" (50) and "W" (45) in the Ping G set have always been among my favorite clubs, they just don't suit me out of the rough or bunkers or tricky situations near the green.

Put both of them on a loft/lie measuring device and see if they are really the same loft, and lie.

If they are, then it is the shaft that is causing the difference. If that is the case, I would use the wedge that is best around the green.

My 50 degree gap wedge (Titleist SM6) is the full grind and its one that I got for full shots. My SM6 sand wedge is a standard grind (S) and it a more versatile grind than my gap. My SM6 lob wedge (60) is a K grind. I don't use my lob wedge for full shots that often. Its usually around the green where I have to manipulate the face and it works well.

I have always used the PW from iron sets, and then a 2 wedge setup from there. I currently go 52/58 as that keeps 6* gaps between the three wedges. I look at my 52* from a full swing perspective as that's mostly what it's used for, so a more standard grind and bounce in similar progression with my PW. I look at my 58* more from a short game perspective and get a grind that allows versatility to open up the face and go with high bounce since the sand around here is pretty soft.

2 wedges for me, Vokey SM-6 50* and 60*.

Honestly I'll play both full or half, got a feel for both of them. The 50 completes my gap off my Mizuno PW nicely, full swing in the 125y range. Full on my 60* is 100y. I'll vary on my 100y shots depending on the flag locations. front flag, full 60*. Room to hop and check it in, 50*. I also can get a little better turn and spin on the 50* 3/4 swing.

More important on my wedges is the grind, my 60* has the least amount of bounce possible. I could flip an egg of the griddle with it. 50* is more of a full bounce, don't open it up much at all and generally play tighter lies in the dry SoCal areas.

My Mizuno PW is 48* so for the longest time I've played 52-12, 56-14, and 60-11 Vokey's. 52* is strictly a bump and run club from about 30 yards in- it's truly a niche club for me but I'm really confident with it. The 56* is 110 yards full swing or longish 20 yard bunker shots. The 60* is all green side chips and bunker shots.

I’m ashamed to say I don’t even know what the bounce is on either wedge. I don’t pay real close attention to my equipment specs (I know, my WRX’er ho card is about to be revoked). OK. Just went and looked.

One is a Callaway MD3 Milled C grind with 10* bounce. Stock shaft. This is the one I like around the greens. And I’m probably better with it on mid range shots.

The second one is a TM XFT with 12* of bounce. It has the KBS shaft that it came out with.

My 60* is a match of the Callaway and my gap wedge (50*) is a match to the TM.

I can’t really carry both because I’m already juggling the top of my bag.

Sounds to me like a combination of the sole bounce/grind and the shaft. I would reshaft the one that is better around the greens with the same shaft and specs as the one that is better on full shots. I have always found the shaft to have more of an effect the fuller the shot is and the grind/bounce to have more of an effect on shorter shots. I would bet the newly reshafted wedge would be much better on fuller shots and keep its reliablity around the greens.

My pw is 46 and I game 52, 56, & 60* wedges. Yardages are 150, 135, 123, & 110 respectively. I utilize all of them at full swings depending on yardage. My bump and run club is my 52 and I use my 60 for other green side shots and anything from 110-in

I use all my wedges for both greens and full. Have had some that were one or the other, not a fan.

Full 58, 90 yds, flops, greenside bunkers, chips, 50 yd pitches, etc.

Full 52, 110, pitches, chips, can open it up and hit higher shots as needed.

Full 46 , 130, gap wedge. Have chipped with it as well, good on longer shots as well, haven't found all I can do with this one yet. Only had it a few weeks.

I went with a low bounce tour grind in my SW to enable me to hit all varied shots from the fairway. Gives me the ability to open it wide open for light rough and firm bunkers.

Paired it up with a high bounce LW with a primary function for heavy greenside rough and fluffy bunkers. What I learned from a high bounce LW is that it doesn’t cut under the ball like I use with my low bounce LW. It’s guaranteed to advanced the ball forward but I am using height to stop the ball not crazy spin.

The only time I will hit the LW full out from the fairway is on soft courses.

I’m playing my PW at 48*, 54* SW and 58* LW; all Mizuno and confident that I can play any course with this set-up.

depends on the wedge... My 50 is for full swings. My 56 does most of the wedge work heavy lifting. My 60 is just for touch shots that require more loft.

Pitching Wedge (a/k/a old-fashioned 9-iron) and Gap Wedge (a/k/a old-fashioned pitching wedge) are for full shots, so I use the set wedges, for consistency with other irons and forgiveness. Plenty easy to hit them laser accurate with that smooth ¾ swing too and still have enough spin for what's needed. Sand Wedge (@54) and Lob Wedge (@61) are for partial shots with grinds for versatility.

Can you only carry one of the two? Is that your highest lofted wedge? If you can carry both, don’t sweat that they’re the same loft. If not, perhaps you can take something out of your bag at the long end. I personally trade larger gaps at the long end to have better wedge gaps.

No, I also carry a 60*, which this year I've actually started using quite a bit around the greens.

I'm actually already back and forth between two clubs at the top end now, so carrying both probably isn't a real viable option. But I still might do a little adjusting at the top tomorrow and see if there might be a way. Maybe I can add a 4 wood to replace the 3 wood and hybrid.

I buy for my full shot. I try and avoid that dreaded 50 yarder if possible. Im carrying 5 wedges. 43. 47, 50.5, 54, and 58. Seems stupid, but Id rather take my full swing as it takes out my clockwork guess. Im only carrying a 5w so I have the room.

43? I think that’s called a 9 iron?

Get your loft checked. I had a buddy with a 56 that he seemed to Hit so far. Got the loft checked and it was actually 52.. was a Tm milled grind

I currently have wedges that run 47, 52, 60. I pretty much never hit the 60 with a full swing. So the 52 covers most all shots from about 100 yards down to about 40. Then around the green I use the 60 a lot.

Full swing. I still play Form Forged Cleveland TA3's and actually added their D Wedge (50*) and S Wedge (56*) from that set to my bag a few years ago for full swing exclusively. Inside 100 yards I almost always use my 60* 588 and wanted more consistency and yardage control between my 46* PW (150y) and 60* (100y).

It's been great having the exact same look and feel from 3I all the way down to 56* SW across my set. Using different Gap and SWs almost exclusively for full shots in the past never felt as natural as my current setup.

That might be the best answer for me right there. In fact I have a TM XFT 60* that I don't use (it matches the 56* & 50*), I could pull the shaft out of it and put it in my Callaway 56*.
