Maine & Rhode Island Suggestions

I am going to be in New England with my wife next month and I am looking for some suggestions on where I should be looking to play. This isn't a golf trip but I will try to play 2-3 times if possible. Here's the thing, I live in California and I haven't played many Golden Age designed courses. If I can play some stuff designed by older greats (Ross, Stiles, Travis, etc) that would be great, but if they are terrible courses due to years of change or neglect then I don't mind skipping them. The other thing is, I may only be getting 9 holes in some of these rounds due to the time of year and the fact that east coast courses seem to not allow early morning play.

I am open to thoughts and suggestions.

Trip layout looks like this so far:

Damariscotta ME: Going to play Wawenock Golf Club I think.

Wayne Stiles course that seems like it's a hoot. 9 hole course with alternate tee boxes for 18 hole play

Kennebunkport ME area: Biddeford Saco Country Club or Cape Arundel.

The reviews I have read on Biddeford say the front 9 designed by Ross is great but the newer back 9 designed by Silva seems tight and forced. I've never played a Ross designed course. Is it worth playing this over Arundel to play 9 holes of Ross? (particularly if I only have time to squeeze in 9 holes)

I played 9 holes at Cape Arundel last time I was out this way and it was awesome, I would not hesitate to play again.

Newport RI: Here's where things get tougher.

I'd consider playing Triggs Memorial for the Ross connection but it seems to be at least 45 minutes from Newport.

Meadow Brook seems to get excellent reviews and it's a little closer than Triggs.

Green Valley Country Club seems like a pretty decent option.

Jamestown seems like some people like it and some don't.

Probably going to skip Newport National as I don't really feel like dropping $100+ on a round.

So many options in southern Maine... Webhannet in Kennebunk Bench is a fantastic member owned track that allows public play - originally designed in 1901 by Skip Wogan who was a Donald Ross disciple. Some of the best greens in the state but this is my home track so I may be a bit biased :)

If you have a Pro who doesn’t mind making a call York Golf & Tennis is a private Ross track just a few miles further south that’s very well conditioned. The Ledges in York is a more modern course that’s fun to play and the foliage is beautiful in October.

I’ve never played Wawenock but in that same region Samoset is a great Oceanside course that’s as close to Pebble Beach as you’ll find in New England. Boothbay Harbor was just recently renovated and while I haven’t played it I’ve heard nothing but great things.

If you’re considering traveling off the beaten path Belgrade Lakes is 100% worth the trip... some of the best views you’ll find on a golf course especially in October and pretty widely regarded as the best course in Maine (about 15 minutes from Augusta).

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions!

Good stuff thanks. I had skipped over Webhannet originally as I didn't see anything about it being open to public play. It sure looks nice from the pictures though.

I second the Ledges. Great course with fast greens.

OP, best thing about playing golf in Maine is going to be the surroundings and whoever you get paired up with. You picked the right time of year for foliage, and playing along the coast never gets old. Just ask to get paired up with some native Mainers (no slight against anyone) and let the rest take care of itself.

Meadowbrook is a much better track than Exeter. Meadowbrook is about 10 years old so tees, greens, fairways still nice and tight. I actually like the Exeter layout - a bit hillier, smaller greens, slower greens, more of a classic look and feel. Exeter is good, but if you have a choice go for Meadowbrook.

Montoup is decent - pretty busy place - lots of members and public play, some nice views as noted..

You might try and beg your way on Wanumetonomy - just outside Newport - it's a Seth Raynor design and has Ocean Views on every hole - pretty decent. If you belong to a private have your pro call...

Newport CC - Probably have zero chance - but worth seeing and driving in the parking lot before they throw you out, it's also out by all the mansions so a nice drive...

Point Judith CC is also outstanding Private Ross course - hard, but not impossible to get a reciprocal there in the fall when the NY crowd is gone...

Newport National is nice but pricey

Triggs Memorial is good - classic Ross track/layout and generally in good condition in the fall - ignore the haters, the place is classic, great little bar/food with characters..scorecard says Par 72 but it is really a long Par 70 these days.

Thanks for the insight. Man if I could get on Wanumetonomy I would be so stoked. Really would love to play a Raynor course. Not a member of a Club though, I might have to offer to wash dishes for them...

All a golf advisor review proves is that 98% of golfers wouldn't know a good layout if one fell on them and they rate mostly on "lushness".

The reviews of Triggs are pretty rough on TripAdvisor also.

One out of state reviewer didn't have lushness on his mind after having played there recently....

Crime Ridden Course... DO NOT GOLF HERE

This course is in bad part of town. After my round on a medicore course, I reported my car being broken into and my luggage (visiting from out of town and headed straight to the course) with all my personal items stolen. Course management said oh yes... this happens all the time. They are aware of the problem and they do nothing about it. no signs or security measures. I was simply told that I should file a police report. DO NOT GOLF HERE.

I played the ledges today. It's in nice shape. Hard and fast. Greens were aerated in early September and they are rolling true and at a nice speed. Enjoy

Anyone on here play North Kingstown Golf Course in RI? Built by Walter Johnson (worked with Ross for years as an engineer) it seems like an interesting option as well.

Montoup seems like a good course, according to their website through they don't allow public play before 11:00am. Being as I am trying to squeeze in rounds while my wife is in bed that's not going to work.

Ideally I could get onto Wanumetonmy but without the ability to have a pro call as a reciprocal I put my chances right around zilch.

Oh my, you pretty much have it covered. Not much to choose from for public courses on the Newport side. Newport National greens fees are silly, but you do save driving times and tolls across the Newport bridge heading west.

North Kingstown is a fun little town-owned wallet-friendly course. Somehow it has a really nice set of par 3's. Otherwise not sure what to suggest for old style courses without going wild on you. If you're willing to forget about the economics, then the New England golf series lineup of private courses for October is stunning (https://neat.bluegolf.com/bluegolf/neat18/schedule/index.htm) including Wannamoisett and Eastwood Ho! as old style course you will never forget (assuming you can join in the fun for one time as a non-member).

I can say that Newport is awesome. Castle Hill Inn is great for dinner or drinks (blueberry lemonade!!) if you're into upscale with amazing sunsets. The Cliff Walk, mansions, Thames Street ... it's all good. Have a great vacation!

ShortStick, that's a clever idea, although I didn't see anything on the NES web site that says that non-members can play (unless they are a guest of a member). Maybe they just left that part out though.

There's also the Tour of Greater Boston, which I believe does allow the try-once-before-you-buy option. They also have some good RI and SE MA options in October, like Wannamoisett, Carnegie Abbey (a modern design, but a good one), Eastward Ho!, and Wianno (schedule at http://www.golfthetour.com/schedule.php). All of these are going to be close to full day affairs when you count the travel and full courses though, and the OP seems to be looking for quick rounds. But I have to say, if the OP's schedule lines up with any of those courses (especially the first 3), he really should try to make it happen.

Awesome, thanks for your insights. I like the idea of the those fall tournaments as a way to get on some of those privates, unfortunately it's not going to work with my schedule. I appreciate the idea though. Looking forward to RI, never been there before.

Meadow Brook seems to get excellent reviews and it's a little closer than Triggs.
I would play here as my 1st option.

Green Valley Country Club seems like a pretty decent option.
It's pretty good, but Meadowbrook 1st, this 4th/5th.

Jamestown seems like some people like it and some don't.
DO NOT PLAY JAMESTOWN. They suffered a big loss starting last year that has continued into this year that the town water plant over salinated the water they used on the course (reclaimed) and it has killed almost everything, greens are unputtable. They've been replacing greens during the season, and also some temproary holes have been set up. They have been focusing their efforts on the greens and the fairways have suffered from it. I play still, but because our league plays there. Two years ago and earlier, I would have said, definitely play, because it's the best 9 in RI. However, not right now it isn't. They've even dicounted the geens fees. This is not a destination to waste time with at this point in time.

Probably going to skip Newport National as I don't really feel like dropping $100+ on a round.
I would play meadowbrook 1st.

On to the others... Played Exeter Monday. Is in good condition. Wouldn't be a bad 2nd choice, but would play Richmond over Exeter (Meadowbrook, Richmond, Exeter, all owned by same group). Greens were golling excellently and they definitly have brought this course back from the dead it was a couple years ago when they had some issues over a bad winter and they focused their resources on Meadowbrook and Richmond 1st. It has bounced back nicely.

Another option that no one mentioned: Fenner Hill? I have always liked that course. Has a couple quirky holes (driveable par four downhill over water and 2 holes later a tight right to left dog leg, but other than those... It's fun.

Triggs isn't worth the drive from Newport. It's good if you're in the area, but most of the best golf is in southern RI where you are.

Yepp go to Shelter if you can. Played there last week. Love that place.

Measurement ≠ Meaning. Motion can’t be taught. It must be experienced. You don’t teach a swing. You design the chaos in which a swing is discovered.

Golf facts = reduction of a complexity which remains unknown. A way to sell certainty where none exists.

Just got back from the trip. You weren't kidding about avoiding going over the bridge. For such a tiny state Rhode Island is a terrible place to drive and try to get around. It would have taken me forever to get over and back to the stuff on the west side of the bay. I didn't end up playing any golf in RI as it was pouring and blowing about 25mph on Friday morning when I would have played. Figured it wasn't really worth it.

We had a fun visit to RI though. Newport has a really cool vibe with all the old buildings.

OK I’m back. Quick rundown and some pictures. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. As mentioned in the post above, the weather was so bad on the morning I was going to play in RI that I skipped it and didn't play anywhere.

Wawenock Golf Club

This place is so good. I was walking around the whole round with a huge smile on my face. This is a 9 hole course that has an alternate set of tee’s so you can play it as 18. The alternate tees do a good job at changing the angle (and sometimes length) of the hole. Below are some pictures of a couple holes with photo’s from each tee box. The routing here is sweet. You start at the top of a hill and go down to the low spot and come back up the hill to end. Green complexes / surrounds are great with some excellent mounding and deep bunkers. The 8th/17th hole is a semi volcano green. There are some maintenance/drainage issues but it was October in Maine, I’m sure it’s in better shape in August. I played 9 on two separate days so I was able to play from the different tee boxes. They let me come out and tee off before the pro shop opened and just pay them at the end of the round which was nice. If you find yourself in this part of Maine I highly recommend playing it.

These photo’s show the different tee boxes that share the same green.

Cape Arundel Golf Club

Cape Arundel is in Kennebunkport and is the home course to the Bush’s (41 & 43) when they are in town. I only had time to play the front 9 on this trip. This place is awesome, like really really good. The course is routing is great. They have lots of strategically placed mounding/chocolate drops that can make life difficult it you put yourself in the wrong spot. The green complexes are amazing with lots of undulation. Excellent conditioning. Someday I’ll play the back 9. If you are in Kennebunkport you need to play here. I won’t post too many pictures because frankly the Golf Club Atlas course review does a much better job. http://golfclubatlas...ndel-golf-club/

Here are a few pics I took. I caught some great weather, I wish I had shorts. It ended up being 83* on this day so I layed on the beach and swam in the ocean after playing golf. Typical October Maine day I guess

Approaching the 5th green from the fairway. Note the mounding on the adjacent 13th and 12th holes.

If you went to the beach and swam in 83 degree weather, in October, then you weren't in Maine. ;)

I played this last weekend at Aroostook Valley CC, in 38 degree weather with the sleet coming down. That is the real Maine.

Seriously, looked like you had a good time. :hi:

If you went to the beach and swam in 83 degree weather, in October, then you weren't in Maine. ;)

I played this last weekend at Aroostook Valley CC, in 38 degree weather with the sleet coming down. That is the real Maine.

Seriously, looked like you had a good time. :hi:

Right? We lucked out with the weather big time. Most days were "fallish" temps and conditions. The day after the 83* beach day it was 53* and raining. We did have a really good time. Some misc Maine pics below:
