Low bounce irons

Definitely agree with the zoysia greens. Like putting on Velcro. Im guessing you have played River Falls ? I despise those greens. Flat but I never make anything on that course. And pitches etc are so inconsistent. One may roll out and next one backs up.

 

 

Oh yea it’s just down the road, I live in Duncan. As zoysia greens go they have gotten better but still not great. The course actually use to be nice many years ago but it’s dropped off and leveled out as just a decent change of pace course. I actually don’t play there that much maybe a handful of times a year. Willow creek, Woodfin, village greens, and Cherokee valley are courses I probably play the most but I pretty much play all over the area and rarely play the same source twice a month. If you want to play terrible zoysia greens go play Greer.

Haven’t played Pebble Creek in over 10 years (whichever course they let the public play) and only played 3 pines once a few years ago even tough I know a few members. Back to village, that forced lay up area on 18 is usually far from firm.

With a wedge and either of the MB sets I own yes. With the i500. Eh. Up to a 6 iron sort of. Doesn’t cut a divot that flies. But will leave a divot of sorts if that makes sense. Long irons though. Not. I just practiced at my home range after all night rain. And barely getting a 6 iron to cut. Swap to the blades and after a couple swings to shallow out I’m pounding the sweet spot.

 

I want to love these irons. But I cannot get used to the lob irons. And im historically a good long iron player who’s always carried at least a 3 if not 2 iron id hit off the deck.

Yep 18 is maybe the best spot. 8 ,1, and 4 were like runways last week. 10 and 12 were hard on the back too. Even 16 up the hill has been rock hard.

Not so much here. Mostly I scatter wispy bermuda and powdered dirt leaving a shallow dirty smudge. It doesn't much matter what club I hit. There are a few fairways with better turf where something resembling a divot can be taken and you see a somewhat intact dirt/grass chunk. It is getting better, but it is always going to be somewhat this way.

working on the 6 iron alone at the moment.... bumped another degree strong ( over retro lofts) and 2 more degrees upright ....plus added enough lead tape to bring it up another swingweight point and poof...middled ....time and time again with a serviceable divot.... I guess ill go down to the 7 and then work my way back up 1 at a time as i have time to get these tuned.... Love the fact that ill have an i500 set wearing 3 ft of lead tape...lol

Want less bounce bend the lofts strong. Want more bounce bend the irons weaker.

 

Bending irons strong increases offset. May not bother some, but it is very visible and annoying to me.

For non irrigated fairways they’re usually pretty acceptable. Like you said 4 can be somewhat ragged. 7 is usually dicey. I hate 8 but the fairway is usually ok, can’t imagine it too firm and fast or you’d be in the pond unless you layed way back. I usually drive over the creek on 16 and just take whatever lie I get if I’m not in the fairway.

Lots of discussion without many iron suggestions...

 

The idea to go with a Mizuno iron for lower bounce is a good one, but here's the thing; older Mizuno SGI type irons were actually better for what you're looking for. Find a set of Mizuno MX-19 or, better yet, MX-17 irons (as long as you're not playing in any USGA sanctioned events as these clubs do not conform to the 2010 groove rule change).

 

I have both the MX-19 and MX-17 sets and these are EXACTLY what you're looking for. Yeah, they're much older, but they have really low VCOG, super low bounce (especially the MX-17), and sharper leading edges on wider soles.

 

And here's the surprising thing, they absolutely feel better than Mizuno's modern SGI offerings; JPX-800 through the JPX-900 HM. I kid you not. Mizuno had this kind of "power bar" thing going on behind the impact area on the face combined with a deep cavity design. These MX-19 and MX-17 irons feel fantastic when pured and do not "hide" mishits nearly as much as their more modern equivalents. You will know where on the face you're hitting these irons. Yes, they have crazy thick top lines, and more offset (but not a crazy amount), but these clubs really perform when it comes to scoring if you have a less than perfect swing.
