Portland golf courses

KSP

Recommended Posts

I might be spending a week in Portland later in October, and I was wondering about golf courses. It’s a little vacation with the wife, but it won’t be a dedicated golf trip. I think I might bring a Sunday bag and hopefully play a couple rounds or some afternoon nine holes.

So I was wondering if there were recommendations for courses in Portland. Also interested in a decent course for an afternoon nine holes, if there are good options at a decent price.

Also I don’t know anything abut Portland so open to general vacation advice.

Yes, Oregon. As of yet I don’t have any hotel. I’ve never been to Portland so don’t know anything about it. The wife and I are definitely going to do hiking assuming it’s easy enough to get nice hiking places. I haven’t done any research but I assume there are lots of cool places in the vicinity or just outside of the city. I am all about taking day trips out if there’s cool stuff nearby a.k.a. the coast.

Is downtown Portland like San Francisco, with people using bathroom in street and an increase in petty crime? Not worried about safety but just want a pleasant vacation experience.

Don’t drink but like to walk around city and visit shops and restaurants. Obviously I want to sneak in some golf but needs to be somewhat convenient. If there’s a course that’s really exceptional destination worthy I may be able to take a day for myself and make the trek.

I would love general device about neighborhoods and city layout. Thx!

Hmm...

I personally hate downtown. The homeless problem here is a joke. With that said, if you're going to venture down there, the Pearl District is pretty nice.

There are tons of great restaurants without actually going over any of the bridges (if you're coming from the east side).

The spectacular golf is all a good drive away. If you're spending a week here and you've never been to Bandon, I wouldn't skip a one night trip down and back to play golf and see the coast.

Regarding golf in the PDX area, I would probably skip it altogether if the weather is iffy. Sure, some of the courses drain pretty well, but it's not a great time to play anything that public that is considered a must play (Pumpkin Ridge) for out of towners.

I'm a member at a club and I'm always happy to host, but it will depend on the days for sure.

On mobile, I can’t see your location so I’ll just give some general info that we do for the family from out of town.

Hiking: the gorge. Problem is with the fire last year not all the trails are open yet. Mt hood has lots of hiking and is about and hour or so from downtown Portland.

Walking around: pearl as mentioned. 23rd ave, Hawthorne, Alberta arts and Mississippi. Saturday market might be cool if you’ve never seen anything like that.

Restaurants: my favorite right now is lechon. But lots of good options downtown and inner east side. What cuisine do you like?

Golf: if you want to get out and just scratch the itch, as I’ve mentioned Langdon farms and stone creek are your best bets. I enjoy heron lakes in the winter and is probably the easiest to get to from downtown.

Coast isn’t bad but I’m biased as in there’s other stuff I’d rather do. If you could swing a few days out of town, you could go to central Oregon. Get some hiking in around there, play at pronghorn (my current favorite) head to bend to walk around - lots of shops and brew pubs there (I know you said you don’t really drink). Stay the night, head out early and either head south to crater lake or northeast up to painted hills. Finish with a winding drive to hood river for dinner and/or directly back for Portland.

Feel free to msg me if you want more info.

If you go to downtown Portland and since you have never been here, I highly recommend going to the bar and happy hour at the Portland City Grill. You will have the best views of the city while you enjoy some cocktails and/or appetizers. (You're welcome.)

Thanks all for the recs so far. Any word on rose city municipal? Looks like it may be a nearby option for a quick inexpensive 9 hole walk.

It's nothing special but I like it. It's older and charming. Back nine is a lot more interesting (to me at least) than the front nine. 15 is a beautiful little par 3. I can't imagine it does well if it has rained recently.

I agree with that. I like the back better than the front. I like the layout of the 14th especially.

It can get to where you’ve gotta slog though some thin grass area’s where you walk in mud.

Regarding driving ranges, most places will convert to mats soon if not already. I like Glendoveer during the fall/winter if for no other reason than the bottom floor is covered and they have heaters in about 10 bays. It’ll be tough to find good sand practice. Heron lakes and stone creek would be - imo - the most complete practice areas for the public courses. Large putting greens, full range, sand.
