how to reduce grip pressure

Over the years Ive developed lots of tension in the last 3 fingers of my left hand starting with misleading IMHO instruction that the left hand must always lead the right. While my grip is sound, Ive got lots of tension that only increases in the backswing producing a stuck position that ends up in a flip/hook. When I try to ease up tension at address the tension creeps in on the backswing and top of swing. Yesterday I actually put a tee in my left palm which does help as increasing tension with the tee hurts!! I also experimented with the last one or 2 fingers of the left hand off the grip. Any tips appreciated.

I moved up one size to cure this issue. I use a tacky, soft midsize grip and it feels so natural in my hands that I just know I can "hold on loosely, but don't let go" (to quote 38 Special).

Trying different grip size is a fine idea. But really, if you're creating a flip through at impact, you must be releasing all the pressure just before impact, not holding it constant through the swing. Very likely there are other issues that are pulling your arms out of position and you're compensating with perceived grip pressure. Do try to keep grip pressure constant and together throughout the whole swing, but if you can't, look elsewhere to see why it is being pulled apart...

I set up pretty rigid. But....my swing trigger is to relax my entire body before taking it back. Simple.

I'll second grip size as a potential fix. I moved to midsized a long time ago and then jumbo a couple years back and honestly it's just so much easier that I now struggle to swing a club with a standard sized grip. As another poster mentioned, you can just hold the club so much looser without having to worry about throwing it half way to the green every time you swing.

My instructor tells me to use pressure of 12 on a scale to 10. I tend to get too light.

Use a swing thought.... during swing think or say something like " easy does it", "gentle" or " soft hands" etc...

Had same problem. It becomes almost a mental block.

 

I broke it by making a few practice backswings tension free then hitting a ball. Just a backswing...take it to the top normal speed with your neutral grip pressure and make sure the tension doesn't run up arms and through shoulders.

 

Do like 3 of those then hit a ball..repeat. It'll help your body get past the mental block and ingrain the tension free backswing.

I hit balls only focusing on feeling my hands through the whole swing. I would often feel them flinch at impact or just before. It took me a while but I trained myself to keep them the same pressure through the whole swing. Massive improvement in my game especially long irons and driver.
