Initials in the Bumper

How do you feel about purchasing a used putter with someone else's initials stamped in the bumper?

 

How much less is it worth to you?

 

I admit I'm a little apathetic about it myself. I would prefer not to use a putter with someone else's initials, but I don't see myself welding over them and refinishing the stick just to get rid of it.

 

I refinished a first gen TeI^3 a few years back and had my initials added. I did it to force myself not to flip it if I didn't like it. Now of course I'm kicking myself as I have a couple other projects going and I've hurt the value with the hand stamps.

 

So, that's the question, let's pose a scenario like it's a 33 inch Mil Spec 350 gram or some other sought after head and it's super clean but has "LT" or something, benign initials, mine are "MJ" for instance, hand stamped into the bumper. If you would have payed $450 for the Mil Spec what's it worth with "LT" in the bumper... mint other than the initials?

Haven't thought too much about it but then I don't own any putters with initials on them (and I own 26 putters). So I guess my answer is I avoid them.

Stamp a “56” on the other bumper and say it was Lawrence Taylor’s and the price triples! Problem solved! Just kidding, me personally I wouldn’t buy a putter with initial stamps unless it was an extreme discount that would cover the cost of the work to remove them.

If I found the perfect putter, I could probably go for any of my initials T.C.B in any order. Other than that, no go.

To me, it's worth the cost of the putter minus the cost to refinish it. Would have to be a fairly valuable putter to be worth it for me.

For me, and like others have said, I would have to deduct the costs of a removal and refinish. Only get them initialed if you plan to keep it.

I actually found a mint 33" Mil Spec 350 with deep face milling, extra sight lines, custom shop stamp but has initials on bumpers... for $150 at GG years ago.. bought it with some coupon I had without second thought. I don't know how much more I would have paid though considering the initials.

 

Don't plan to sell it anyway and they don't really bother me. I did remove the paintfill in the initials so they are not so visible anymore.

I’m getting ready to send my M2 off for a refinish. I’m planning on stamping my grandkid’s (3 of them) names on the putter. That should keep me from ever selling it (becasue I won’t want to and nobody is going to want one with theee names on it!).

Wouldn’t bother me. Heck, I have a Cameron that was a custom with top line and possibly someone’s phone number on one bumper. At the very least, it is a seven digit number, I assume it’s a phone number.

Since i i don't really collect clubs, i use them i could care less what's on the bumpers. It's not like I'm going to be able to see it while I'm putting. However, i wouldn't pay full price for it either since it is customized for someone else

Personally, I'd prefer not having someone else's initials on it. In my mind, it's kind of like a girl with a lower back tattoo of some other guy's name. It's nothing personal, but it's a constant reminder that someone else gamed it, enjoyed it or abused it before you...

 

With that said, there are certain exceptions to that rule...exceptions that are still appealing enough to ignore the permanent reminder that it was previously "gamed". There was even a fake Aston Martin ad that illustrates that type of exception...(Google it).
