P730 or 718 MB

I swung these two, among others, over the weekend and am giving some serious thought to treating myself to a "congratulations, you can golf again/early Christmas present" in the form of a set of P730 or 718 MB. I hit both off of a matt in a fitting bay, so not ideal for getting great LM numbers, but with both, the numbers were so close that any minor difference may very well have been down to the shaft bolted into the fitting heads. The P730 had a KBS $-Taper 130 in it and the 718 MB a KBS Tour 130 in it. Here's the numbers:

Swing Speed - between 80 and 83

Ball Speed - between 114 and 117

Launch Angle - between 20 and 23 (better shots were launching closer to 23 and not so great shots were lower in the face and closer to the 20 number)

Spin - right around 6200

Carry hovered right around 161 yards.

Feel between the two was pretty similar and the look at address was also pretty close with the P730 maybe having a little rounder toe profile as compared to the 718. The big question I have for anyone who has hit both is whether there is any major difference with one to the other with respect to turf interaction, i.e. does one tend to dig more than the other.

Will depend on your angle into turf...more bounce usually less dig, leading edge can help as well

This is the main thing that I'm wondering about, neither club has published bounce specs on their respective manufacturer's website.

Add MP18, 919T and Apex MBs to your list of irons to try. ;)

I tried the MP18, but only with a Modus 120X and I didn't care for the REALLY pronounced loading and unloading feel. Didn't try it with any other shafts, but it was also slim pickings in an X at my local Golf Galaxy. I currently game JPX 900T and want to get away from them because I find the shorter clubs to be a little chunky looking for my liking, so I didn't bother with the 919T. I tried an Apex MB, but it had a PX 6.5 and that's a shaft that my body just can't take anymore with having RA. It was a glued in shaft, so no way to swap it out for something else.

My sig will tell you which way I would go but I think you're doing yourself a disservice by not trying the other options in a shaft you prefer. That is, if you can.

Very true, I'd definitely recommend going to a place that you can swap in and out, try all the heads you want in all the shafts you want

I think I'm going to see what the MP18 is like with a KBS Tour X for the sake of thoroughness. Still not sure about the 919T, however.

Gave it another go including a try with the JPX 919 which was wasn't different enough from my JPX 900 to make me want to spend the cash. Gave a serious try to the 718 MB with a KBS Tour 130 X, MP 18 with a KBS Tour 130 X, and P730 with a KBS S-Taper 130 X. All three were put up against my JPX 900 Tour with Modus 3 105 X and all three were consistently better than the 900 Tour. From a feel standpoint, I could feel the club through the swing better with the KBS 130 shafts v. the Modus 105. So, it's definitely these three. I was the least consistent with the MP 18 which had the widest dispersion and also flew the shortest. The P730 was again very good and consistently carried three to five yards farther than the MP18. The dispersion was better as well. The 718 MB was consistently carrying a couple of yards farther than the P730, but the dispersion was even tighter. I think that's the club that's getting the nod. I may still try it with a couple of different shafts (C-Taper, Project X LZ and Modus 125), but the numbers from the KBS Tour were very near ideal for me.

U cant compare the 718 and p730 properly if using 2 different shafts.

But there should be a $ Taper in the titlesit cart then.

I’ve hit all three irons and different shafts.

There is a difference between the KBS C-Taper vs the Tour.

It’s going to come down to which shaft you feel best suited to your swing and which iron you like the look of.

Personally, I preferred the KBS Tours. The feel was better, the trajectory and spin rate was ideal. The C-Taper lowered everything a touch.

Why are you hitting X flex? 80-83 swing speed is very light for an X.

I just went through another fitting, ended up with modus 120 stiff in srixon z785. Numbers were great. Trackman numbers with 6 iron. Swing speed 86mph, ball speed 119mph. Carry 175.

I previously played 18 Apex MB with PX LZ 6.0. When I was fit for those, swing speed 89.

Anyways if you did not like modus 120, try modus 125...should be a shaft you will like. Complete opposite of 120. Its profile is like 105 but heavier.

X flex with 80 mph ss?? Why?

Swing speed right now is down significantly. I just had wrist surgery in the beginning of October and have only started back to making full swings. I'll still be doing PT twice a week for another two weeks to get mobility and strength back. When not on a bum wrist, I'm closer to 90-91.

They’re literally basically the same club. MBs have extremely little to differentiate between themselves.

As stated before, grab the one that looks best to you and try them both with the same shaft.

Strongly disagree. I’ve owned many mb sets. Too many to count. Very few are same same.

I prefer the titleist for the lower flight. To me the 730 launch pretty high. Also might just be that I didn’t prefer their leading edge as much. A little blunt. Plus to the 730 is the short heel to toe length. If I could squash the 2 together you’d have something.
