Yes. There was a group of guys at my club who would throw in money at the start, then whoever had the best score got the money. Then they bought the drinks. You always wound up out of pocket if you won, but it was worth it for the bragging rights.

We used to say that winners buy losers lunch until one of us figured out that because lunch could get a bit spendy, it was better to lose than win

Lol I can't imagine selling out for a turkey sandwich and chips...

...but make it shaved ribeye with some provolone and I might "accidentally" grab the wrong wedge.

Just something I was curious about in other groups.

In our group (usually 8-10 guys), the winner of the day's bet (nassau, skins+extras) traditionally will leave the winnings on the table to just let the table(s) drink it.

Does your group do something similar?

Back when I played every weekend for a few dollars with the same bunch of guys, it was just a foursome bet, but the winner left the winnings on the table and we drank/ate. If there was anything owed after the winnings, the losers chipped in. So, basically, the winner got free lunch/drinks. I miss those days. To this day, and it's been 30 years (yikes!) the funniest day was the day when we ordered French onion soup and when we got the soup there was no crouton or cheese. We complained. The waitress said, That's how we make it. We replied, Then it's just onion soup, You can stop calling it "French". She didn't comprehend. And the other time when we got into a little argument with her regarding happy hour. She said happy hour ended at 1pm. We countered that it was 12:59 but what's on the table is all we're paying and includes a respectable tip. If you agree it's 12:59, your tip goes up. If you insist it's 1:00 PM, your tip will go down. (it really was 12:59 but she was a bit argumentative). When we got the bill, she charged us full price for the drinks. Oh well, you try to help some people but they don't want it.

When people realize they are about to get beat by me they usually start drinking right on the course.

In one of my semi-regular groups, all of the money goes into the table for the tip to the girl in the grill, and if you want something to eat/drink, you buy it.

We used to play winner buys first round, but when people take advantage and start ordering doubles of some kind of top shelf liquor and the winner has to come out of pocket to cover it, I quit that practice.

Our group varies. Most of the regulars put a large chunk of their winning in a kitty to buy the 'losers' a drink. Sometimes those who placed lower also kick in something. Some of our players don't drink but still kick in something to the kitty when they win. If they lose they usually get a hot dog and non-alcoholic drink. SO far it has worked out pretty well.

But while we are on the subject how do you pay out?

I am trying to come up with a fairly systematic payout schedule and below is what I have come up with by manually adjusting the payouts rather than using a direct formula. The full payout is based on a 'contribution' amount for each player in the event times the number listed in the payout schedule. Since the winner usually buys drinks they usually get about half the pot. Anyone else have a payout schedule they have come up with?

If we are playing for money, absolutely. However, a lot of times we skip to where the loser just buys drinks as the bet to eliminate the middle man.

Man, people are unbelievable. What a ****head thing to do!

First round, out of winner's pot: Yes, I'll have a Macallan 25 double please

Second round, out of own pocket: Miller Lite, please

Was it really that blatant?

In Australia we play in local comps on weekends so money games aren't overly common, but there are a couple of "local rules" for shouting drinks. If your tee shot doesn't reach the ladies tee, that's a shout. And some groups play 'the snake' which is where whoever 3 putts a green gets the snake, and whoever has the snake at the end of 18 shouts a round. Some

groups actually have a rubber snake that is attached to the holders bag which is pretty cool, but it could be anything to represent a 3 putt. A variation of the snake, when the shout occurs every time you walk past the clubhouse or see the drinks cart, can get very expensive if you 3 putt early and keep it all round.

I might have to start mixing this in w/ my group. Great stuff in here

If we did that I can’t imagine all the extra smack talk that would be going on. Every shot to a green that is quite a ways away, “oh my, that looks like three putt territory”. And the guy currently holding the snake. I could really hear a lot of “Noonans” coming from him on any second putt of any length!?

I have to remeber this for our next round.

The concept of the winner coming out down money when all is said and done is peculiar to me. Since many of you seem to be eating/drinking after the round, a better game would seem to be for the losers to pick up the tab. If the money is going into a bar tab anyways, the losers might as well split it. That way at least the guy that plays the best can look forward to a free meal/drink.
