When did you start playing blades?

Started with blades as a teenager and went through college with blades primarily using ram fx tour grinds. After college I was playing less so figured I’d switch to a players cavity back iron. Used them for 10 years or so and watched my ball striking decline. Assumed it was my lack of play/practice that was causing poor play. Then about 8 years ago I decided to back to blades for a couple reasons. 1 there simply isn’t a better looking/feeling iron than a true blade and 2 if I was going to hit irons poorly I might as well have a good looking iron. The reality is my iron game improved dramatically to a level It used to be. So I guess for me it was the fact that blades fit my swing and I have found it makes me focus on striking the ball solid rather slapping it all over the club face with the players cavity back irons.

Grew up whacking a set of Wilson "Sam Sneed" blades around the yard. For the next 50 years in and out of blades and now with a kind of blade Mizuno MP 18 MMC. As much as I like to HO clubs, this time next year I will have these in my bag. I got tired of every decent swing going high or higher and straight regardless of what I needed from the shot.

In the year Y2K. Summer before Junior HS year. I believe two guys at our home track were selling sets of MP29 and MP14. I bought the 29’s for $400.

I had them for around 5 years. Wish I still had that set. Those clubs had class in the bag.

In 1987 when I started playing. Everyone either played blades or Eye2's. I didn't switch to a cavity back until after I had been playing for 4 or 5 years.

My first full year was 1999. During 2000, I started playing with fellow golf nerds from another forum, one of which was a blade using sort. Hit his sticks, liked them well enough. Local shop allowed me to take an MP14 demo to the range to compare with my irons. Hit the MP14 5 iron light years better than the CB 5 and 6 irons from my own bag.

Took the plunge on 12/31/2000, buying a set of Golden Rams from 2nd Swing (because I was too cheap to buy a set MP14s that were $300 more, LOL). Scored better with them, so I kept at it. <shrug>

Turned into quite the carousel, though. I started checking out older blades. There are a LOT of older blade sets a person can play around with. Bit of a slippery slope. :pimp:

Those of a certain age all started playing blades. I started playing blades in 1974, played those for 10 years when I went to the original Hogan Edges. Played those for several years until they were stolen. moved on to various Cast GI clubs, Moved back to blades this spring when I moved into the new Hogan Blacks.

... I started out with Spaulding Executives that could not have been more forgiving in their day. As my ball striking improved I progressed to more demanding irons and 10 years in I switched to MB's. Then with the advent of forged cavity back combo sets it was a no brainer to switch. After playing them several years and with the introduction of the solid core ball that spun less I switched to all forged CB's and have never even considered playing MB's again.

Somewhere around 2003-2004. I had started with full-on cavity backs - both Wilson and Ping ISIs, but never liked how they looked so quickly moved into a set of Golfsmith "players" cavity backs. Nice clubs, for sure.

Then I found a set of used Ram Tour Grinds for cheap and decided to give them go as an experiment. The grins started from day one and they were in my bag until just this past year when they got displaced by a set of MP-32s.

I have tried a few cavity backs since that switch on a experimental basis, but none ever made it to the point of having a permanent home in my bag.

Like others my first set was an old set of Wilson blades that were my dad’s. Then I played his old Hogan’s... and I’ve never looked back. Played 680s, 681s, TM MBs 2014, and now the p730s. I don’t know if I’ll ever move out of them. I’m still tempted to put the old school 1 iron in the bag. It’s pretty much all I know and just love the look of them at address.

My choices and progress have little to no value to anyone else. But to answer; when I took up the game at 40, I bought a set of Pings off the shelve. About six to eight months later I switched to blades. In 2006 I changed to Callaway's original X-Forged and now play 716CBs. Still have my Blades though, and when my swing gets out of whack, they go back in the bag. :beach:

The comments have def motivated me to get blades. The problem is this forum shouts at anyone who does not use GI clubs. I complained that I needed traditional lofts and someone said I wont make progress and missing out because I am not using Game improvement clubs.

I am sticking to my guns - traditional lofts and then blades in 2020.

I started with blades. MacGregor VIP V-foil. I was 22ish years old so I started playing late in life. After 4-5 years I switched to SGIs (JPX 825), which I played for a season but they didn't really improve my game, and I missed the look of forged irons.. gradually got back into player's cavity forged irons, and then combo'ing blades back in.

Day 1.Tommy Armour 845m silverbacks. Of course that's just my stlye. My first time ever on a snowboard was down a black diamond run in Crested Butte. That was a much more painful learning curve than the blades however.

I played those for a few years and moved on to 690.cb irons. The last few years I have played a fly z pro set, so pretty much blades again.

I started with them back in 1980. My first good set of blades - NEW - were Titleist tour models ... 1986 if memory serves. A little cross border run into Michigan

Still play blades on and off. Have two pure sets in the basement, Cally x-proto and Bridgestone j15 mb's

PS I consider my s55's mostly blades (as I did with my 59's 58's 57's and 56's)

I'd say some of my favorite blades over the years were from my Mizuno days .... had 4 or 5 models but my favorites were Mp33 and Mp37's
