Beginner Iron set

My 26 year old nephew is interested in starting to play golf.

 

I was looking for some insight into a set of used GI irons that I could pick up for him off the BST.

 

Any suggestions will work. I was thinking about a set 5 or 6-GW that were a couple years old.

My opinion: Depending on his athletic ability right now and build.... pretty much anything that's cheap. Literally something from 1990 that's $100 for the whole set is fine. Shaft is probably slightly more important because if he's a 6 foot 6 beastly man child then you don't want him swinging 80g lady flex graphite, as he would quickly out grow that and probably over power it right away. You also don't want 130g X100's if he's a 5 foot 6 130lb soaking wet kind of guy.

 

However, I'd suggest getting lessons before even investing in clubs. A teacher will have access to some demo 7i's that should fit him as is and he can get a feel for proper mechanics and see if he's even really interested in taking up golf more seriously. Then once he's made up his mind, you consider buying a full set.

Fit will matter, you could probably size up his athletic ability to take a guess at shaft, guessing a stiff for a "normal", reasonably athletic 26 year old, use a PING fitting chart for length and lie, and find some used PING GI irons and you'll come pretty darn close. I'd take him to someone qualified to figure out specs and go from there. Lots of good options. Heck, you can get some PINGS that are 8 or 10 years old if in good shape that would be great clubs (and not just hawking that brand, just know that to be the case).

Do the Ping fitting for grip size length and lie angle...the get some eye 2+’s

Np, that's what I did. My roommate would take me to the driving range... I'd use his clubs. I was like hey... This is fun but I want to try playing for real. So got one lesson as prior to that point I wasn't even holding the club properly!! Looking back, the lesson was meh but it at least got me a proper grip and back swing (for the most part).

 

I then purchased an entire set of clubs for $100 on ebay. Driver through SW babyyyyy. Used that for my first year, hacked it around the course, had some fun, then got much more serious and into it from there.
