graphite for irons- any inexpensive, anti hook?

mocokid

Recommended Posts

My shoulder keeps telling me go graphite with my irons (age 61, 10.3 GHIN) with hook, flip tendencies. I'm using TT XP 95 Stiff, and also like Nippon 950GH stiff with prosoft inserts which do help.

However, Maltby's MPF puts me more in a R flex (3 code), as I don't really carry a 7i 150 yds (more like 140 yds). For a driver, I'm a 4 (100 MPH diamana blue 62 stiff is fine for 225+ carry), but for now I'm just dealing with irons. Most of the iron shafts with 3 and H (correct a hook) are steel, except the SteelFibers, a bit more than I want to invest. Same with the 4 and H, SteelFibers. Any recommendations for a 'firm' (R/S) graphite shaft for irons with strong anti hook tendencies ? Project X graphite maybe?? thanks in advance.

My read is that you are under estimating your 7-iron SS or over estimating your driver SS. They do not remotely mate with each other. As to your original question, the Recoil 760 in F3 should work well in your irons. I swing the 7-iron at 74 mph and they work well for me in Rogue Pro irons.

You can't go wrong with Recoils or Steelfiber.

Recoils feel 'softer' than Steelfiber, at least they do to me.

Steelfibers can feel boardy. There's a much wider weight and feel range with the Recoils.

MOCOKID,

Any chance the hook/flip on irons come from you fighting a shaft that is a bit too firm? Possibly with an R-flex shaft you might have better form and lessen the hook?

At age 58 I was swinging PX 5.0 shafts, but at age 63 was struggling on most days, often with left-pulls misses. I went to an NS Pro 8950GH in R (half a flex and 17 grams lighter), and it straightened things out. Just a thought.

(I have since moved on to new irons - see below).

Thanks I got some AP1 heads, now need to get some shafts. Recoils seem a possibility, will check in to them.

What you're asking for don't match what you've been playing. If the TT XP 95's and Nippon 950's are what seem to work best for you in steel, then you really don't want a tip stiff (anti-left) type of a shaft. Which is fine. Shafts do not actually have a left/right bias so I'd just forget that maltby scale if I were you.

Keep in mind that find the best shaft weight is generally more important than flex, so that should be the starting place for your search. A better match for those steel shafts that you play would be the newer Steelfiber fc90's (probably stiff). The SF i95's and even the recoil 95's will probably be a bit stiffer (stout, boardy) than you are used to. But that's only a guess, you never really know until you try them and that's the only test that matters. So if you get a chance, no reason not to demo anything you can find to try out.

thanks propman, I'll probably try the MPF graphite, same specs as recoil and others.

Do you really believe that a $15 shaft will be as good as the Recoil or Steelfibre?

Why not? Do you really believe a product is superior just because it costs more?

most of the time it does, depends on what you are after

Component shafts and heads can fool the price scale. I have a $10 shaft in my 5wood that I wouldn't swap for a $200 shaft. It fits my swing.

The KBS shafts are very stable and straight even in the R 70s.

unusual feel, very tight as though they were a good flex stiffer than thay are

They are point and shoot!

i always feel that soft tipped shafts want to get left.Nippon Pro 950s in R for sure.I like the 1050s better

I know that's me,but stiffer tips seem to control that

I would rate Maltby as one of the industry leaders in R and D?

his Ratings are subjective and seem to favour his designs but that's why he designed them as he did, after figuring out what works for average players

Any directional bias comes from the player and how their swing changes as the feel of the shaft changes, it's not an inherent property of the shaft. Malby's scale is based on generalizations of subjective responses by players and as such is very unreliable.

When the feel of the shaft loading/unloading (stiffness feel) does not match the players expectations of how it should feel, there is a potential for the swing itself to change. It's those swing changes that are the major source of the directional bias. And it's also important to note that both he original expectation and the particular swing changes are completely subjective and can vary quite a bit from player to player and that is what makes the generalizations unreliable. One player certainly could get a 'left' bias for a shaft that's too soft and maybe a right miss for a shaft that's too stiff and end up matching Maltby's scale. But another player can just as easily get a right miss for both too soft and too firm. Or another a left miss for both or any combination really.

Second those expectations (which I already mentioned were subjective) are usually based on the past experiences of the player and not any particular laws of physics. You can have the two players with identical swing speeds and mechanics and give them identical shafts and it might feel too stiff for one of the players and too soft for the other player potentially resulting in opposite biases for the same shaft.

I would rate Maltby as one of the industry leaders in R and D?

Maltby is certainly a well established and respected component designer and manufacture (and deserving of that respect) - but a leader in R+D might be stretching it.

1) The small companies generally don't have even close to the same amount of R+D $$$ as the larger companies.

2) (I could be wrong but) I haven't seen any evidence of any testing or hard data to back up either his head or shaft playability scales/ratings. And w/o any actual testing and data, the best we can call them is unsubstantiated theories.

Actually it is not as he was hinting that expensive shafts are not better. But your point is a better comparison so I'll see what the response is to the $25 660/680 proposal.

He's considering shafts that are not comparable because he doesn't yet know what shaft characteristics will work well or not for his swing. Cost is irrelevant is the specs don't make a good fit nor does cost play any part in determining how likely the shaft will or will not be a good fit.

these 3 in stiff=

kuro kage black 2nd gen, 75g, 3.5 torque, mid traj

recoil 680 sc, 82g, 3.8 torque, mid traj.

maltby pro series 85g, 3.3 torque, mid/high traj.

Are you aware of the work involved with putting .370 shafts in your AP1 .355 heads? It would be a lot easier to stick with .355 shafts while you are experimenting. Unfortunately, there’s not as many options in the type of shafts you’re looking at.
