Well, my second go round with the VR. Had it in a 6S and liked it, but didn’t have it for long as I sold it with the driver.

This time, bought a VR off a golfwrxer who had a 6S tipped a 1/2 inch to be between stiff and x. I often go stiff or X in 60 gram range so thought it might work and it is off to a great start. Installed it in a Callaway B21 driver (their best sounding current driver, no kidding.) Two rounds and the VR has such a nice stable but explosive feel, it has really helped straighten out my driving. I feel like I can really aim my driver and hit the ball on that line. Does not feel too stiff and I am at 103 mph. What I really like is I can be smooth or aggressive throught impact and I get a consistent result. Definitely cut some spin. I am getting more carry and roll out than I typically do on tee shots. The B21 gets overlooked, but it is a hot face and I can draw or fade it.

From what I hear there is not much difference between the VR and IZ except in the tip. I’d like to try the IZ in a fairway. I’m curious about other GD shafts now. I can say I definitely prefer the feel of the VR over the Ventus Red and Blue shafts I tried. Just a preference. VR feels like a high-end golf shaft should — smooth, nice tight flight.

I keep coming back to the AD-VR 6x in my driver. Tipped half-inch, my SS about 112. It's just so smooth feeling with a nice kick, but doesn't get away from you like the DI or IZ. It's really the best of those shafts.

I would like to try the AD-XC or AD-HD just to compare, but wouldn't be surprised if I keep coming back to the VR.

👍I also am looking at XC but am thinking for a fairway shaft. Or wondering if I should get another VR for a fairway. I like it that much in my driver. What is a good companion Graphite Design shaft for the VR? Many mention the IZ which might be good. Hit it a few times, thought it felt stiffer and more ‘one piece’ vs the VR. But it’s definitely tight. The XC sounds like it feels pretty nice. I don’t care for a super firm handle. I like the fast taper shafts GD is putting out now.

i also am thinking after playing the VR in my driver for 3 rounds now that I could play easily handle the X flex. Playing a tipped stiff (6S) and it does not feel too stiff at all.

I did note that Jessica Korda (I am a fan) used to play the IZ, went full Ventus Blue stiffs in driver and fairway in 2020, and this year dumped the Ventus and went back to IZ in driver and 4 wood, plus a new 7 wood with the Tensei AV Raw Blue. This is important information as I model my entire equipment based on what the strongest LPGA players are doing. 😏

I'll chime in with my brief experience. Plugged an AD VR 8X into a Cobra Fly-Z+ 5 wood playing at 42". This is my first go around with a Graphite Design shaft.

Backstory: purchased for a low price via Facebook Marketplace from a second owner. After I purchased, I noticed that it looked like it was tipped almost excessively which had me a bit worried. The guy I bought from didn't know, but after having the tip replaced, it appears to have been tipped about 2.25" (assuming the uncut tip to first ring measurement is the standard 24.75"). The butt also had a really cheap extension, but fortunately I had planned to butt trim it anyway so that was no issue.

Anyway, I've played at lofts of 17.5* and 19* and the results have been wonderful. Super easy to elevate and I love the little bit of kick right before impact - I don't have any other GD shafts to compare to, but to me it feels like just the right amount of kick for my swing. Launch and height fit my eye very well. At the moment I have a very neutral swing path and the ball doesn't waiver offline with this combo. Most of my shots have been dead straight or about a 3-5 yard draw. I've thrown in a couple of low, heely slicers that were entirely my fault. The learning curve/adjustment period was almost non-existent for me. Just plug and play.

Yesterday I hit some of my more memorable shots playing at the 17.5* loft. 235 from the fairway to the pin and I choked down a couple inches - ball landed 5 yards short of the pin and rolled out to 6 feet past (missed the eagle putt 🤬). Also nuked a couple off the tee with some side wind, but they maintained their lines beautifully.

Ultimately I intend to play this setup at 19* (after adding a 4 wood) and possibly cut it down another 1/2" with the goal of hitting a specific gap. That said, it's definitely in the running for my 4w shaft and I'd like to test it in a driver. As I mentioned earlier, this is my first GD shaft but as of now I'm loving the feel and results.

I used the 7X in my G410 LST for a little bit. I loved it. But I knew I would benefit from a tad lighter shaft. My SS is anywhere from 105-109. I put the Ventus Black 6X in the G410 LST, and surprising loved it.

Therefore, the VR 7X is getting cut down/tipped and going into the OG Sim 3W, I already know it is going to be a bomber.

Just discovered what I’ve been missing.  Not a profile in their line up I even considered as a super aggressive transition guy who has always played stout profiles.  RIP/Hzrdus Black/Etc.  Buddy let me try his in my Driver and BALLGAME….

This is why you have to hit them to know and this shaft matches my swing/release perfectly.  Ballspeed/Smash maxed out, dispersion is 0, spin ALL OVER FACE totally in check with even high face right field flares staying under 3k…..

Found My Unicorn, now I want to put it in 3 and 5 wood and sell my entire shaft stockpile!!!!

Would love to know a bit more between this and the AD IZ… for those that have spent extensive time with both the VR and the IZ, what has your experience been between the two?

The IZ has proven to be a bit of a unicorn in my driver set up. Recently was fit into the IZ 6S tipped 1” and my spin numbers across the face are consistently around 2200-2400, launch is up a bit in a good way, and carry and overall distance is as high as I’ve ever seen. Coming from the Black and Red Velocore + shafts to this I’m noticing similar distance on pure shots, but significantly better distance and dispersion on mishits.  The VR was not a shaft that was available in my fitting session.

If you love the IZ, I personally don’t think you will love the VR. For my Ping driver, I have the VR, IZ, TP and HD. Funny enough, I was literally just out for 18 holes on my own, and I brought the HD, TP and IZ. Honestly, the VR is kind of the odd shaft out.

I played the VR for a bit last season, and it did lure me in initially. Very smooth shaft, easy to hit, and easy to turn over. But to the extent a shaft can be draw biased, the VR was just too prone to big pulls for me. I might grab it from the garage one day to give it another try, but the VR did fall behind the IZ, TP and HD for me to be honest.

Today, those other three shafts kind of held true to my past experience, and the IZ was really quite good today and I think earned the #1 spot. From highest launching/spinning to lowest launching/spinning, I would rank it HD, TP and IZ (and if I had the VR with me today, the VR would be the easiest to turn over of those 4 shafts). All three are phenomenal shafts, and I could play (and have played) each of them.  Today, the IZ was clearly the longest of the three, without giving up much of anything in terms of “forgiveness”.

Of course, fun to demo the VR if you get the chance. But if the IZ is your unicorn, I do not think you would gel with the VR. Just my opinion.

All good. If you ever want to try another GD shaft to compare to your IZ, I would encourage the TP. They play similar to me, with the TP launching a bit higher, and turning over a bit more. HD also a terrific shaft.

I’ve demo’d the VF5X. Think Ventus black with a little higher torque in the tip, so a bit softer in the handle and tip. Launches a bit higher too. The VF 60g and 70g series have progressively lower torque and play stiffer and more stout. I have a VF 7S that is really nice for a low/low, but launches easier and feels smoother than Ventus Black. Compared to the IZ, VF is lower launch and more linear, and more stout. My IZ 6S tipped an inch feels less stiff and more active than my 7S VF that is untipped. Spin numbers are very similar on both for me. Both feel smooth and very nice. I prefer the IZ, but on a windy enough day, I’d choose the VF.
