Does anyone know if this time of year you can call and request a tee time by paying the unaccompanied rate?

Also, I just saw this on instagram....pretty cool. In case I didn't copy it link it correctly it's a post about the scale of Yale from the @fried_egg_golf and can probably be found pretty easily since it was posted a couple hours ago.

tell them you're a member at a private club and would like to play there as an unaccompanied

or

tell them your friends work at yale and would like to play as an accompanied

or

tell them you just dying to play there and would like to play as an accompanied

they are very accommodating; the locker room has all the seth raynor designs on the walls.

I called last week looking to play on one of the days where the weather was forecasted to be pretty cold figuring it would be dead and probably pretty easy to get on. I was told I needed an introduction by a member to be allowed any unaccompanied play.

Has anybody played recently?  I saw that I can book a time as a resident, but I'm afraid of the current conditions.

I played this past weekend on Sunday (mother's day).  The course was WIDE OPEN, we saw 7 other people total outside of our 3 some.  They punched the greens a week ago, and you can see they are doing work to restore the course overall.  However, the greens and tees are in bad shape.  Shaggy in spots and dead in others.  Fairways were so so, but the rough was pretty decent with some areas being quite thick.  It's early in the year for growing grass, so I'm hopeful it gets better in the coming weeks/months.  On top of that, there are no concessions, no trash cans, no pro shop or anything else.  Just a golf course.

Bottom line, for $115 to walk (+25 for a cart), it is not a good deal compared to any of the other courses in the area.  The only good thing is that you can book a tee time on short notice and get out, while so many other courses are crowded.

Thanks for the info.  Hopefully conditions continue to improve.  Maybe I'll give it a go next month.

Curious to hear the feedback on the conditions.  I played about a month ago and the conditions were so much better than earlier in the season.

There's rumors swirling that they are considering a very big renovation of the course that could shut it down for next season to make the course an elite destination for college golf and tournaments.

So an NCAA regional tournament is being played here in 2 weeks. How is the course looking?

For that to happen, gotta be in decent condition then. Some of the recent pics, and website, show some good conditions.

You'd think so, but Alabama was supposed to host a regional and they had to back out and it was moved to Oklahoma instead. The fact that that hasn't happened here is probably a good sign.

Just played up there last Sunday. Conditions were decent, some patchy areas and the bunkers need some work. Greens were a touch slow but that was more likely due to being early in the season.

Will be interested in your review. Thinking about heading down there soon also.

Hey guys,

So it was pretty easy to get a tee time 48 hours in advance via the website. The round took about four hours, the weather was nice and so people came out to play. The pace slowed noticeably on the back, where there are a number of consecutive hole with blind shots.

As far as course conditions, Yale is still showing the scars from the University's recent neglect. To draw a comparison, I'd say the conditions are roughly comparable to Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx (especially the fairways and rough) at worst or a mid-level public course at best, but the greens are better (except where they've been scorched). I'm a bit surprised that they had an NCAA regional there, given the conditions.

The layout is fantastic - this is the first inland Raynor that I've played, and unique in terms of the terrain and number of blind shots. There's definitely an emphasis on accuracy, in that you can't miss certain greens or fairways on certain sides or you're going to have some really difficult recovery shots ahead of you.

It's still a $120 course, in my opinion, simply for the architecture. Right now, Yale and Rock Spring are the only public Raynor designs that aren't in remote locations, and you'd be foolish to miss the opportunity to play them. If conditions, rather than classic golf architecture, are your thing, you'll probably be disappointed.

I played last Saturday and the conditions were BAD.

I read reviews but it was worse than what I prepared for.

There were bold patches on the fairways, roughs and greens.

Ball was bouncing and siding over dirt section of the green so it was nearly impossible to read long putts.

As others said the layout was a lot of fun.

Am I glad I went? Yes.

Would I go back? Not until their full renovation is complete.

The drought hasn't helped any course that doesn't have water readily available. Lots of newer courses that had to be developed and supported using "sustainable" needs, depend on runoff for a good portion of their water. No rain, no water.
