I love (addicted to)new gear but..Mizuno MMC vs 2012 Bridgestone J40 DPC

Had a very informative session on Trackman yesterday. My goal was to standardize lofts between my Mizuno MMC irons and my Bridgestone DPC irons. Both sets were purchased used, lofts had not been verified, and the MMC were blowing the Bridgestones away in distance and most everything else.

We did this for every club in each set but I will use the 7i for example. First we hit 2 or 3 balls with each 7i to establish baseline numbers and tested lie of each at the same time. We then adjusted lie for my swing and got baseline numbers again. We then checked lofts. The Mizuno MMC had been ordered 1 degree strong and the 7i was exactly what I expected. The Bridgestone I expected to be standard but was 2 degrees weak.

Bridgestone standard 7i - 34 degrees. My 7i was 36 degrees (now 33)

Mizuno MMC standard 7i - 32 degrees. My 7i was 31 degrees (now 31)

As you can imagine, the Bridgestone was spinning off the charts for a 7i, distance was short and apex very high! The MMC was exactly where I wanted accross the board for numbers. Great apex, spin very good if a little high, and distance what I expected averaging 160.

So, instead of bending the Bridgestone 5 degrees to match the Mizuno, we bent it to one degree strong of standard at 33 degrees (still 2 degrees weaker than my MMC).

I was surprised by what we got. The spin stayed a little higher than the Mizuno, with the 7i was averaging about 8000 rpm. The apex was about 3 yards higher than the MMC which is reasonable. Dispersion was almost identical with a tight little draw. But carry distance averaged 6 yards further with the weaker lofted Bridgestone. We were getting a consistent 166 with the DPC. Also interesting, the extra yardage stayed almost constant at 6 yards more per club with the weaker lofted Bridgestone across the set.

Variables to consider and has to be playing a major role in this:

Mizuno MMC shafted with Recoil 95 F4

Bridgestone DPC shafted with Steelfiber 95 R

Honestly, those two shafts in my mind play very close to one another, but the monitor of course showed some differences in load and release.

I don't have my trackman report in my e-mail yet but anxious to look at all the variables. Anyway, I am going to give the Bridgestones a go tomorrow and see how this travels to the course. Both sets feel great. The Recoil shafts seem to require a little less effort for some reason, but that is minor.

I also tried my two shafts in my M2 driver. One a HZRDUS black 6.0 standard length. One Speeder TS at one inch short of standard. My smash factor was better with the longer shaft which surprised me. It was cool that on the last swing the fitter brought up the optimizer and I was in the blue (good zone) on every category and it showed I got one more yard with my swing than the optimization would give me. Of course at 60 years old my 274 yard total did not look that great compared to the frickin 304 (yes 304) that this young guy got right after me with his 4 wood(again...yes a 4 wood). He was a super nice guy who does long drive stuff now after retiring as a professional athlete at a very young age. Anyway, great to meet respectful young people who love the game and have the athletic ability to hit a ball like that!

Wow, I bought those DPCs (used) with the Steelfibers installed, so never had the lofts checked. Glad that with the adjustments they are performing better and have a shot at ending up in the bag.

After 2 rounds I’m really pleased and excited about the Elevate Tour shafts we discussed. Great weather so I’m looking forward to a couple more rounds with them.

Yea, I never check mine either. Only did so this time because I had a Trackman date to gap wedges and I was hitting the DPC's SO high. I also had a real strong player take a look at them and he thought they visually looked considerably more lofted than "normal". Funny thing too, the 5i was bent 1 degree strong while the others were weak. Of course no big deal to bend them so just interesting to me.

Now...how are those new irons for performance (I already know they look great) and do those shafts seem to significantly reduce shock at impact? How would you compare the shafts to the SteelFiber?
