Tennis elbow and new clubs

Just a little bit of news from me which may help others.

 

I suffered from tennis elbow all last summer, which eased over the winter but started to return when I resumed sessions at the driving range. My tennis elbow was caused by a lifting and twisting injury that I can pinpoint, not by golf, but golf certainly made me suffer last year. Thankfully afterwards and not during...

 

Anyway, I read about the benefits of graphite - lighter and better shock absorption - and thought I would give it a go in my irons....and hey, new clubs :)

 

I was refitted - (and reassuringly, as I used a different fitter I am still in Green dot, + 1/2, regular) and swapped my G400 with AWT r flex for G4I0 with Alta CB r flex

 

Four rounds in the last six days and the tennis elbow is still there but its at 2 rather than 10 and completely tolerable and forgettable rather than being an issue.

 

Might be worth a shot for anyone in a similar position.

A long time ago I re-shafted some Ping irons with a different steel shaft, and developed the worst case of tennis elbow in both elbows. It got so bad that it hurt when I gripped the club.

 

Over the winter I bought a set of Cobra irons with graphite shafts (regular), and the pain went away.

 

I play steel now - Titleist/Nippon 105T, and they seem fine for me. No pain.

I'm glad to hear that has helped and hope yours gets better.

 

My tennis elbow started in the spring and was on and off all summer until finally it just got really bad and I had to shut down my golf earlier than usual. Tried some chiro treatment, but didn't make a dent. Ended up with an eval from an orthopedic surgeon who is a tennis elbow specialist and he recommended a cortisone shot. That was late November and it made a big difference in the pain which is gone. I've just rested it as best I can for the past 2 1/2 months and fortunately can't play golf in our winters.

 

Very nervous about playing but anxious to see what happens. Was in a golf store a couple weeks ago and didn't even chance a demo with some irons. Will be starting some recommended exercises and hoping 6 weeks of that provides a good foundation.

 

I've had graphite iron shafts for awhile now and those work for many, so I can't offer any advice on the graphite other than I hope that's your answer and hope the fact I use them will help once I get back to playing, but playing graphite shafts didn't prevent my developing tennis elbow.

 

I know if I start out with or develop any pain this year I'll be right back to the doctor immediately to see what next (sounds like either another shot or blood spinning is next up and anything surgical is the absolute last option for this doctor) - I waited way too long last year and should have addressed it right away - problem was when I golfed it wouldn't really bother me (for the first couple of months) when I played, but eventually it just got worse. Waiting was a mistake for me.

I had it years ago and thankfully I responded well to cortisone injections. I know they don’t work for everyone but they lasted for many years with me. I did switch to graphite shanfts ans eventually to Steelfiber ones and have been tendinitis free for a long time. My buddy hasn’t been so lucky. He’s had treatments, injections and medications and has had to give up golf for a while. He’s a dentist and can’t risk not being able to work.

 

Good luck with it. It’s a weird affliction when something as simple as unscrewing a lid can drop you.

I suffer from tennis/golf elbow as well but instead going to the doctor i took my sisters suggestion (Kinesiologist) and tried this for most of the winter last year and periodically in the summer. It helped me tremendously and played without pain.

For the price, cant go wrong IMO and it doesnt take long to do. It also comes in different resistance levels. Also has exercises for tennis elbow AND golfers elbow (minor variations).

That's why my orthopedic doctor recommenced - just have to make sure you do the right exercise!

This. I came to say this. I recently developed tennis elbow pains and ordered a theraband which came just a few days ago. Having used it for a mere 4 days, I'm def. feeling better. Your basically strengthening the tendons through the recommended exercises.

For those of you that have purchased the Theraband, what resistance did you get? For the record, I'm 59 and in very good shape, in the gym 3 days a week. Never had any elbow problems until a month or so ago. Sometimes I would feel it when doing dumbell bench presses. But it seems to have gotten a bit worse. I'm thinking the green.

I had tennis elbow in both elbows in successive years from golf roughly 5-6 years ago. I "cured" it each time with the Thera Band FlexBar and switched from DG S300/S400 in my irons/wedges to Recoil Proto 125 F4 shafts and my tennis elbow disappeared and hasn't returned. Graphite shafts make a big difference.

Green was the right one for me. I used the red bar at first when it really hurt, but progressed to the green quickly and stuck with it. I still use it from time to time when I feel a twinge in either elbow.

are you guys experiencing tennis elbow on your lead arm or your back arm?

 

For me, i started experiencing what i think is tennis elbow on my lead arm, after trying to switch my driver swing to a super strong grip. It ended up hurting both my elbow and my rotator cuff/shoulder. I've since switched back to a neutral grip and that seems to help...

Lifting weights like a lunatic over the last 3 months has helped quite a lot (except when I wake up)

I'm having an issue mostly with my lead arm, but some minor discomfort in my trail arm as well. Mine is on the outside of the elbow (tennis elbow). The inside of the elbow is what is typically golfer's elbow.

Green is fine. That's what I bought. I would suggest red or green.
