Shawndale?

Recommended Posts

Most of my golf internetting happens right here, on WRX. I have over the years subscribed to many golf blogs, to eventually block them after reading drivel for a week or two, the exceptions being No Laying Up's video content and Christopher Smith's written blog posts. Mr. Smith is an amazing teacher with a solid golf pedigree as a "speed golf" star before turning his focus to teaching you to be a better player. His approach is very holistic and he is not afraid to reach out to other trained professionals in different fields to get the answers.

Recently, surely inspired by Riveria, he posted a great blog post about Sam Snead's victory over Ben Hogan in an 18 hole playoff to win the LA Open in 1950. Although some of Smith's writing has inspired me more, this is a solid example of his blog....

I'm no shill for Christopher, but I do like to share with this community when a guy is really innovative and brings something a little different than "you're too steep at P6."

So, what's a Shawndale?

Evidently, if you read the post, that was Slammin' Sammy's name for a little cut. Maybe one of our amateur historians can help with any history of this slang?

I don't know why but I find it very funny. Mr. Snead and all of his personality, character, longevity, and amazingly smooth golf swing has some WV dialect for a cut?

I gotta know what he called a draw!

I thought it was a Shantel or something like that. As in "Shant tell". It was a little over the top cut fade, which was one of Snead's bread and butter shots.

Calling Richard!

Exactly.

As a southerner I can see, "shant tell." As in "shall not tell."

What it has to do with a cut, I do not know. Hopefully Madison or Richard will find us drooling on ourselves over here and save the day. If Sam said it, you'd think Pete would at least know what it meant.

My intuition is pointing to: "I shall not tell a lie."

As in, I set up for a draw and pulled a cut, but it worked out for me.

Could Snead have meant "chandelle"? He was familiar with flying it seems (with a couple harrowing incidents) and perhaps borrowed the term and applied it to his shot shape.

"a flight maneuver consisting of a steep climbing turn executed to gain altitude while changing direction"

https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/chandelle

Wild guess.

Some decent dialogue in a past thread...

http://www.golfwrx.c...-sam-snead-hit/

http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/1389104-sam-snead/

Seems there are competing theories... aircraft move of a climbing turn, or perhaps a french golf turn for a pop up cut.

Still no sign of the Yinzers to give up some clarity, I was trying to avoid a PM but that might be my only option.

I’d pm Richard or miss Madison. The topic name made me think of a new Lamb putter name. So they may not click on it thinking “ not another putter that doesn’t exist “. Lol

I reached out to Christopher and he actually taught some golf in France and said he doubted it comes from that as it's derogatory, used for a miss-hit not a pured shot onto the green.

So, a climbing banking airplane turn? The old balls the flight was probably reminiscent of this "chandelle" in an airplane.

I work with Mr. Smith and the man is character. Very refreshing and a person I respect way before a coach. His coaching itself is fun and refreshing. He knows when to take practice to the course and you can tell he has been focusing more on how to increase a players performance with the mind rather than always focusing on the Golf swing. I intend to work with him again in the next few month and Ill be sure to pass along word that many are enjoying his posts. If he can help me shoot consistently under-par then maybe ill admit to enjoying them myself! so closeeee.... :taunt:

Thanks Mr. Jacobs! We're do for a chat sometime soon... maybe when I get back from Scotland, I'll try and take a ton of photos and post them. I'll send you a link to the thread over in the UK section, "March Golf" I think it is.

Hi Matthew :) Pete and I used to tease Sam about the use of that word, hahaha. Christopher’s article on Sam’s victory is indeed superbly written. Sam considered that victory one his three most cherished wins. Have fun in Scotland and safe travels Matthew :) Madison

I'm consistently impressed with Christopher's writing. He's really a step above when it comes to focusing on the mental game and how to practice to be a better scorer.

Top three for Sam is a pretty big deal considering how many trophies he hoisted. And, I'm glad to hear that you and Pete would give him a little grief over his fancy French word for a high cut :)

Thanks for the well wishes, and I'll certainly share my impressions of the trip upon my return.

I have a friend who played mini tours for a number of years; he used that term in describing Sam's bread and butter cut shot. But when he said it, it sounded like chantelle.

Glad you cleared that up for me.

I sent him a link to the thread. I think like many instructors that don't sponsor this website his experiences here in the past have been less than stellar.

I've been considering making a trip up to see him although I must admit that the blog posts have been helping me so much that I am often still working on some stuff that I have adopted after going down those rabbit holes.

I should probably spend more money on quality instruction, but tend to spend my money on golf travel instead.

That is how Sam pronounced it also, lol

When he got something in his mind, especially when it came to something like annunciation, dialect, etc., he was very very inflexible to outside advice, lmao.

It used to drive Pete crazy, lol

Cheers?

Vaguely recall Sam's voice and manner of speech. It's not difficult to think his pronunciation might have been different.

First time I heard "chandelle" was in the youtube link below. Had to look up that one. That's the connection to "shawndale". This is Tex Johnston flying the precursor of the 707 in 1955. He uses "chandelle" at :52.

There were many golf courses beneath his flight path. Can you imagine being out on a course that day, looking up to see a brand new 4-engine jetliner screaming overhead, doing a chandelle straight into flying upside down? Tex's chandelle was a draw.
