Good stuff! Seminole isn't far from me. I was hanging at a local bar watching Riviera the other week and struck up a conversation with the guy sitting next to me. Turns out he's the bartender at Seminole. Claims employees get to play twice per year, Christmas day (club is closed), and Thanksgiving day after 2 pm if the tee sheet is clear. He also told me that Rory's dad is there every day, is a super-nice dude, and also a pretty good stick.

How generous...because, you know, the working class don't have families or lives. God forbid they travel somewhere on a holiday.

It reminds me of this classic scene from my all-time favorite movie, Trading Places, when Winthorpe is dining with his fiancee, and they decide to get busy...Coleman, the butler, is preparing desert tableside...Winthorpe looks at Coleman and says, in an incredibly patronizing tone, "you have it"...Coleman is next seen dumping the crepes suzette in the dumpster with a look of disgust.

Why do you feel the employees are entitled to play the course?

Do you think everyone working for Rolls Royce should be given a free car?

Not really the same thing. With that said, if you do work for a car dealership, you are often allowed to use a "loaner".

But as far as the employees at Seminole. We get it, it's snooty, for the rich, exclusive club. However, the people who work for them, they should be able to use the course more than twice a year, and not on days when it's days you normally would spend with family. It really smells of "Sure you can use the course, but since it's a family holiday, chances are you won't."

However, I'm sure they knew that going in when working there; so that's their choice.

But if it were me, I'd let the workers get to play once a month. But then again, I'm not high and mighty and operate a fancy exclusive club.

Feel free to flame me if you wish.

I agree that isn't how I'd run things, but I respect their right to deny employees the ability to play the course. I also don't feel the employees should be entitled to play the course either. When you take a job you should know what the benefits package is. So if playing a private club is important to you, go take a job at a different private club. Plenty of them allow employees to play multiple times per week, I worked at a nicer private club that allowed me to play any weekday after 2pm.

This entitlement crap is getting way out of hand. When can we go back to not handing out trophies to every kid who plays U9 soccer?

Every club is different. Pine Valley and many others allow caddies and certain employees to play on Mondays or whichever is deemed their "maintenance" day. They also used to allow the State Police to play on Mondays but that ended in the early 90s as some of the troopers were showing up a bit too regularly...lol.?

I'm not saying they are entitled. What I'm saying is, telling them that the only time they can play is Thanksgiving day and Christmas just comes off as condescending.

And like I said in my post, they probably knew this going into the job and it's what they signed up for.

I was a looper and that is how my course handled it. Mondays were all about getting in 54 holes. RIP Scalawags.

Entitled? I like to think that being kind and generous is something that ALL human beings would aspire to. And I would think that playing an occasional round at a course you work at would be a nice "perk" of the job...particularly since a round costs the clubs nothing.

It's fairly common practice that club employees can play on certain days (most often Mondays)...at a seasonal course like Seminole, I'm sure there are plenty of days, if not weeks, where the course is deserted (or is it closed in the off season?).

I've been invited to many exclusive courses...I don't think it would sit well with many members to be sharing their course with the riff-raff. Caddyshack is, IMHO, less of a comedy than a documentary.

I pretty much knew I was going to get many disagreements from many on this board...it is a golf site, after all, and many of you belong to clubs.

You’ve got to remember that most clubs of that scale / service level have a few hundred employees in-season. You just can’t offer unlimited golf to that big a group of people.

I would be blown away if the only Seminole “employee” days were Thanksgiving and Christmas and I’m sure any employee with reasonable tenure can get out more or less whenever they want (but probably only once or twice a year) if they ask the head pro or GM.

Seminole is one of the few clubs holding on to the tradition of closing in the summer. Most clubs found it cost prohibitive to "bring the course back" after being "closed" all summer long.

Played many a fine club (read: ultra-exclusive) in the summer. They never really "closed" but most all of their members didn't stick around for the heat and humidity of summer. But, if they did, they were able to play the course that they called "home".

Call the pro or super; show up with a $20 for the cart guy - and head out to play. Hit the second cart guy with another $20 when you're done. It is a price easily worth paying for playing clubs like that.

I'd always ask the super for a 5 gallon bucket of sand, to make sure that I could fill in any of my divots, plus any others that needed filling. I was always welcome back to play.

Most of their members are from the north so its essentially a ghost town at any major club in the south during the summer months

Regarding sand... While I'm not a scratch handicap golfing when it comes to raking a bunker I'm comfortably a +2. I take care of the courses I play.

F&B not getting the ability to play isn’t that odd, neither is restricting play for Housekeeping, grounds, tennis, or caddies or whomever else. Every club is different but typically it’s only golf specific that get usage of the club facilities (at similar level to Seminole) even then it’s really only managers as most staffers don’t play.

Typically you can play as a guest of a member (if you’re asked, do not ever ask to join them), if it’s slow (men’s and ladies days are best as they usually do a shotgun off of one 9 so the opposite 9 is open), during DST is when we’ll get a bunch of rounds in though most members already played so the place is empty by 1630 and we play till dark. You can also have the pro shop setup a time (as available, not a guaranteed time but you’ll get out but if Dr. McGillycuddy and his mistress show up you will yield the tee. I love golf and have been lucky to play some great courses, but I’m not working in golf to play golf...a lot of people mix that up and their work sucks because of it. An effective manager will give you ample time and opportunities to play you just have to manage your time wisely.
