Good stuff! Seminole isn't far from me. I was hanging at a local bar watching Riviera the other week and struck up a conversation with the guy sitting next to me. Turns out he's the bartender at Seminole. Claims employees get to play twice per year, Christmas day (club is closed), and Thanksgiving day after 2 pm if the tee sheet is clear. He also told me that Rory's dad is there every day, is a super-nice dude, and also a pretty good stick.

How generous...because, you know, the working class don't have families or lives. God forbid they travel somewhere on a holiday.

Why do you feel the employees are entitled to play the course?

Do you think everyone working for Rolls Royce should be given a free car?

Not really the same thing. With that said, if you do work for a car dealership, you are often allowed to use a "loaner".

But as far as the employees at Seminole. We get it, it's snooty, for the rich, exclusive club. However, the people who work for them, they should be able to use the course more than twice a year, and not on days when it's days you normally would spend with family. It really smells of "Sure you can use the course, but since it's a family holiday, chances are you won't."

However, I'm sure they knew that going in when working there; so that's their choice.

But if it were me, I'd let the workers get to play once a month. But then again, I'm not high and mighty and operate a fancy exclusive club.

Feel free to flame me if you wish.

Doing a good job of flaming yourself as it is

Entitled? I like to think that being kind and generous is something that ALL human beings would aspire to. And I would think that playing an occasional round at a course you work at would be a nice "perk" of the job...particularly since a round costs the clubs nothing.

It's fairly common practice that club employees can play on certain days (most often Mondays)...at a seasonal course like Seminole, I'm sure there are plenty of days, if not weeks, where the course is deserted (or is it closed in the off season?).

I've been invited to many exclusive courses...I don't think it would sit well with many members to be sharing their course with the riff-raff. Caddyshack is, IMHO, less of a comedy than a documentary.

I pretty much knew I was going to get many disagreements from many on this board...it is a golf site, after all, and many of you belong to clubs.

Florida golf has an offseason? What? Jan 3rd and 4th?

Seminole is closed during the summer. (May - October)

Same as Augusta.

Dreams are not meant to come true.
Dreams are meant to keep you going through the darkness.

Every club is different. Pine Valley and many others allow caddies and certain employees to play on Mondays or whichever is deemed their "maintenance" day. They also used to allow the State Police to play on Mondays but that ended in the early 90s as some of the troopers were showing up a bit too regularly...lol.

Like Rory's Dad. Members that are at the club every day get on the employees' nerves...

Seminole is one of the few clubs holding on to the tradition of closing in the summer. Most clubs found it cost prohibitive to "bring the course back" after being "closed" all summer long.

Played many a fine club (read: ultra-exclusive) in the summer. They never really "closed" but most all of their members didn't stick around for the heat and humidity of summer. But, if they did, they were able to play the course that they called "home".

Call the pro or super; show up with a $20 for the cart guy - and head out to play. Hit the second cart guy with another $20 when you're done. It is a price easily worth paying for playing clubs like that.

I'd always ask the super for a 5 gallon bucket of sand, to make sure that I could fill in any of my divots, plus any others that needed filling. I was always welcome back to play.

List some of these clubs that you played.

Racking my brain - I've been gone from So Fla for almost 20 years:

Sailfish Point

High Ridge

Jupiter Hills

Hawks Nest

Mariner Sands

Willoughby

Rio Mar (as many holes on the ocean as Seminole)

Bent Pine

Frenchman's Creek

JDM (or whatever they call it now)

Mayacoo Lakes

Banyan Golf Club

Piper's Landing

Harbour Ridge

Hobe Sound

Jupiter Island

Cobblestone

Those are what came to mind (after having to google most of them to remember the names)

There are obviously many more today than when I lived there.

I think of all of them, I enjoyed Rio Mar, because it was really laid back, and I believe they had 12 holes that either play into, away from, or along the ocean.

There were a few more that have changed names that I don't know the new names - some I played during their receivership, as they didn't all make it financially. Most I played during the summer months, when there was no one else on the course, the they were all in pristine conditions.

And, if you notice, most of them were Palm Beach County and north - mostly north.

By all accounts his dad is a pretty good guy and seems to really enjoy the atmosphere there - nothing to suggest folks get peeved with him. If this year is like a past year, he's probably "getting on the nerves" of employees at Augusta National today, lol. Good for him.

According to the guy I met, all of the Seminole employees like Gerry McIlroy. He's known to be humble, affable, genuine, and a good tipper. Beyond that, as successful as his son is, apparently Gerry has not forgotten where he came from. It wasnt that long ago that he was on the other side of the bar...

Surprised he's a member, even if Rory is his son. didn't think Seminole would given a GD.

I agree that isn't how I'd run things, but I respect their right to deny employees the ability to play the course. I also don't feel the employees should be entitled to play the course either. When you take a job you should know what the benefits package is. So if playing a private club is important to you, go take a job at a different private club. Plenty of them allow employees to play multiple times per week, I worked at a nicer private club that allowed me to play any weekday after 2pm.

This entitlement crap is getting way out of hand. When can we go back to not handing out trophies to every kid who plays U9 soccer?

Amen
