Talking Cult Balls....

Thommo335

Recommended Posts

Inspired by the talking cult clubs thread, thought I'd do the same for balls and avoid a threadjack....

Thinking game changers, personal favourites, great ones, crap ones, sleepers, forgotten ones etc. Here goes....

Titleist Tour Balata, Professional and ProV1, Slazenger balata, Maxfli Revolution, Precept Lady, Wilson Staff Duo and FG Tour, TM Inergel, Maxfli DDH, Rextar Balata, Nike TA (esp DD version) and One Black, Cally TruVis, Hogan Apex, Uniroyal Plus six, Dunlop 65. Slazenger B51, Penfold Ace.

Let the debate ensue.......

I think the biggest "Cult" in balls right now are near tour level urethane balls at low prices!

The Kirkland balls definitely have a cult following. For me the K3 with a urethane covers performs well above its price point so its hard to justify paying for anything else. Its a better ball than I should probably be playing but slicing that $1 ball into the woods hurts the wallet way less than a ball that costs 2-3x as much and performs worse.

Yeah, any of the direct to consumer balls have a cult following. But if we're talking back in the day I've got to throw the Tour Edition, Maxfli HT 100, Titleist Tour Balata and the Kro-Flight only because it had the compression of granite.

I second the old Spalding Tour Edition. Great ball that did everything the Tour Balata did, plus didn't go out of round or cut on the slightest mis-hit. As I recall it was a couple dollars less too.

Damn, forgot that one. Remember finding one and was beside myself with excitement to try it out. Spun like crazy, hurt Greg Norman a bunch of times though with too much spin, thinking '86 PGA....

Well, Im like a 20 handicap and have been only playing for 1.5 seasons so you may not want my advice.... Feel, rather soft and not too clicky. No clue what the compression numbers are. Im not a high spin player (because I suck) but I find this balls hold the greens better than all the non urethane balls I have played and too me plays similar to V1s and Chrome Soft which I used before this.

Yessir! I played those all through high school and thought I was cooler than the preppy Titleist kids. I wasn't, but that didn't stop me...

That's funny. I played them for a similar reason, plus it always made it easier to ID my ball. I still play pretty much anything other than Titleist just for this reason.

I think it's a little clicky off wedges, no more than a Pro V1x though. It's probably a soft or softer than a Pro V1. It's firmer than an FG Tour probably similar to the Q Star Tour. As for spin, you're probably not going to find a ball that spins more off irons and wedges. I play Hot Metal irons with a 31* 7i and swing it around 80MPH; and I can easily get over 7000 RPM of spin on good strikes. Full wedge shots are well over 10000 RPM.

TaylorMade Red LDP 4 piece

Might be at the top of the list. I recall some digging around in Walmart trying to find these, like 2-3 years after they were discontinued

I still have a ton of them in a storage bin (maybe close to 200 balls). At the time it was the best ball ever made for my swing.

You young whipper-snappers -

Strata Ace was preceeded by the "original" Strata, which led to the development of the Tour Edition. Never cared for the Tour Edition.

Worked in Austria around the time these balls were "hot". Took 8 dozen with me. Sold 4 dozen for the equivalent of $100/dozen. Sold used Ping Eye 2 for $1000

Ah - the good old days.

But, here is my all time favorite:

Yes sir, actually bought a "few" of those from a table/bin of loose golf balls from a Golf Dimensions in Myrtle Beach around 2006 for 25 cents a piece. Some of guys in my group of usual suspects were laughing at my geeking out over them, until kept having to buy dinner/drinks as a result of bets?
