Callaway X Forged - Why No Love?

jgpl

Recommended Posts

Why do you not see the current x forged in play anywhere?

I have never seen a set in any WITB , and never seen a set in any club bag. My biggest golf retailer told me they never sold a set, not even one!

I have hit them, they look great, feel great, head size is perfect, they are workable and quite forgiving

Any opinions?

The original callaway x forged filled a void in the company lineup before Callaway released the apex pro. With the pro and the similar looks and feel and performance I feel the x forged is simply redundant. Mizuno has a similar redundancy problem right now. It’s called the jpx 919 hot metal pro vs jpx 919 forged vs mp18

I have had X Forged in the bag for the past year and not looking to change anytime soon. Great irons and look great as well. Might even add x forged 3 iron to my set to replace current hybrid. I know Furyk still games them, but it did seem like a lot of Callaway staffers switched to new apex pros.

Hit them today for fun. Great looking and feeling sticks. Could easily ditch my raw mb for them

They look great ; my major concern is launch off the deck for the long irons

The 4 iron is currently longest iron in my bag, and launches very easily for me at least. That is main reason i am thinking about getting the 3 iron. The easy launch and forgiveness of the 4 iron is what has me even thinking of the 3 iron. For reference my carry distance off the deck with the 4 iron is about 205-207 yards.

I played 2007 x forged until last year. I picked mp18sc over new x forged because of feel and looks which are both subjective. They performed identically. I do have to say I like the look of this years Apex Pros a lot more than x forged.

And I’m not calling them ugly or saying they have bad feel! I liked something else a bit more, they were my second choice at the time.

Nice to hear about performance and funny you mention looks because the square toe look of the xforged is one of my draws

I edited my comment because I didn’t want it to seem like I thought they were ugly, good looking sticks! Surprises me that they didn’t sell well. Maybe cannibalism by people waiting for Apex Pros? That seems unlikely on a mass scale though.

I think it has to do more with there wasn't really a place for them at their release date. They were almost exactly the same size as the Apex Pro '16, and had a similar shape. I imagine now that the Pro '16 is gone, and the Apex Pro '19 has a jumpier face and a thicker top line and a bit more offset, there will be better player's moving to the X-Forged. However, you have the JPX919 Tour, the new Cobra Forged CB/MB, and the Z785 that are, IMO, slightly better performers that the Callaways have to contend with.

I totally agree with all of the comments though, it is a great looking and feeling iron. I think the '13 X-Forged (III) took the prize in the looks department for all Callaway models, but they did a good job on this one.

That’s funny because the x forged and Mizuno mp18 sc were what it came down to for me as well. To me they felt exactly the same, with slight edge in forgiveness going to the x forged. I ended up going x forged because i was able to get a good discount on them through CallawayVIP. Also i love the look of the x forged, with the satin finish and minimal badging (minimal for Callaway lol).

I hit the new apex pro and they had that clicky feel, similar to AP2’s. ‘19 apex pros did seem to spin less with same shaft i have in x forged (px 6.0) , but they have more offset and thicker top line.

They are a beautiful set of irons! They look great at set up, feel great and I was getting some really good spin numbers from them during a demo. If I was ready to buy during the demo I would have purchased them on the spot. It was the first time in a long time I thought about putting Callaway irons in the bag.

Great Question. As of last September, I am gaming the X Forged 18's(3-PW) with Modus Pro 120's. I love them, an extremely soft and solid feeling club. I also just put an 18 degree X forged UT iron(Holy butter!) I kill this thing to a point where I might be removing both my hybrid and 3 wood to add an extra wedge. My only change I could see in the future is going with 7-PW in the Callaway MB's, and keeping the X forged 3-6. I really miss the look and feel of an MB blade. However the X Forged is extremely close to feeling the same.

My issues with the X-Forged had nothing to do with performance. With the X-Forged the middle of the blade looked extremely high and rounded (not a high toe, high middle grooves) in the 8-P. The 3-7 had more of a straight cut top line (more traditional looking). It honestly looked like two different sets of irons 3-7 as one set and then the 8-P looked like something from a different set visually. I almost put the X-Forged irons in play last year, but I was going to do a split set 4-7 X-Forged and 8-P Apex MB.

I had a short flirtation with them after a outdoor demo, but the didn't beat out my Z765s for feel, forgiveness and distance, for me. Maybe should have gone with the Modus 105 instead of the 120 since that is what I've been playing.

I was honestly a little disappointed as I really wanted to like them. Might give them a shot again when they hit CPO next year....

This! The finish isn't great and they dont feel amazing. I had Alex MB which were great. But comparing X'Forged to Z785 is like comparing a Ford Mustang to a Corvette. Ya Mustang is good, but it doesn't perform like a Vette

I haven’t seen detachable fitting heads for the Xforged and Apex mb. How ever Callaway did provide demo 7 irons of both models with PX 6.0. I think the consumer looking for the Xforged already knows what he wants and needs. I think it sells on looks alone. It’s not anything innovative or groundbreaking. It’s just a soft feeling, pure Forged iron with predictable shot flight. Between the mp18 SC, z785 and Xforged, it a wash. All feel good.

I think the golfer who plays the Xforged isn’t one to boast by posting them on WITB. He likes a classic, timeless and mininalisr design. Pure soft feel without the gimmicks of tpe or speed foam or tungsten weighting and crazy badge design. They are a rare breed who avoid the busy tee times to prevent embarrassment to other golfers when the show off their godly skills. That is why you do not see them on the course. He will also wait another 5 or more years until Callaway decides to release the next gen Xforged iron.

They made it to my final two options after about 2 weeks of fitting and trials last spring. AP2 nudged them out due to more forgiveness. Gamed the original X Forged back in 2007-2008. The new X Forged are beautiful, I love the satin finish. Just ended up going with an iron with a smidge more forgivness. As many have said above, they are great; but it's a crowded market segment now.

They are excellent, easiiy as good as the 718 CB, 919 MC or Srixon 785. However For Callaway fans, they get lost in the hype over the CF19 and Apex Pro.

For me this is true especially in 8-pitching wedge. Apex pros actually have even more offset than X Forged. I got used to it, but am currently looking to replace pitching wedge with a vokey or MD4 46 degree. Pitching wedge shape and offset does bother me, probably more than it should lol.
