Are head weights the same regardless of shaft used by OEM?

Is there any problem with taking a new set of Mizuno HMP shafted with Project X LZ graphite 4.0 shafts, removing that shaft and throwing in my Recoil 110 F4 shafts? My assumption is the heads all weigh the same regardless of shaft (as long as standard length) but I am not sure?

Some OEMs have 2 sets of heads, heavier and lighter, just to make life easier when making longer/shorter clubs. I'm not sure this is common to all OEM's but certainly many do have 2 distinct head weights. Regardless, if your existing heads came shafted with graphite direct from the OEM then replacing with another 'light' weight graphite shaft shouldn't give you many problems.

There are always exceptions but most shaft designers do design their shafts and the weight distribution (both graphite and steel) around getting fairly 'standard' swing weights when built with fairly standard lengths and head weights. Can't speak to the PX LZ graphite - but the Recoil 110's balance great with standard head weights and lengths. So chances are good you won't need to do much for SW matching.

 

It's really the ordered length that will have the biggest influence on whether the OEM's will use different weight heads or not.

TT2017 is correct. Also, there is no standard for head weights by iron head regardless of whether they will be paired with steel or graphite shafts. If you have a swing weight scale, you could dry fit everything and add tip weights or lead tape to balance the set to your desired swing weight.

i reshafted a set of Miuras with Steelfiber 90s needed 4 g tip pins to get swingweight back t where it was at D2.

This is exactly why the Wishon irons have hosel weight bores so they can be fitted with either steel or graphite at different lengths. If you are building your clubs with half inch increments you would expect there to be 7g difference in head weight from one to the next.

Usually, in my experience at least, the heavier heads also have .370 hosel bores.

I found i200 6 iron with graphite shaft on ebay with the intention of replacing it with steel shaft. Does Ping have two sets of heads for steel and graphite shafts or just one?

One head, but a custom tuning port which is a weighting device, they adjust the weight depending on what specs they’re building to.  
Several factors involved, but no way to know.  
So it’s a bit if a crapshoot.

Ordered playing length is going to play a much bigger role in what head weight you get than just whether or not the shaft is steel or graphite.

 

No one (that I've heard of) really has two separate versions of the head for steel and graphite.   Some have "a" and then a lighter "b" weight head.  But the "b" weight heads are generally needed for over length builds.

 

 

Shaft can play a part but it doesn't really matter if it's steel or graphite - what matters is the specific shaft model, flex, and weight.   Fortunately, iron shafts are almost never have their balance points shifted higher ("counterbalanced") the way wood shafts are.   In fact most lighter weight graphite shafts have the balance point pushed lower to compensate for the lighter shaft weight.  That's true for both steel and graphite shafts.   So it's usually only the ultra-light iron shafts that might end up effecting the head weight significantly where there is not enough discretionary weight to fully compensate.

@malelee21, Another thought, what model graphite shaft in that ping iron?  Ping uses counterbalanced graphite shafts in some irons, the Alta CB for one, so that would be a factor as @Stuart_G described.  

Also by chance is it a demo club? The hosel connect systems used on demo clubs would likely affect the head weight as well.

Proforce tour extra stiff graphite shaft. I will be installing Nippon 950GH stiff shaft.
