Leupold customer service

Just an FYI- great experience with Leupold customer service. I have a GX-4i from 2013 which , after replacing a battery is no longer working. Leupold told me to send it back and they would either repair it for free or give me a 60% discount on a new rangefinder. Very happy they stand by their product. Will update with results.

Some years ago, I had a similar experience with an older Leupold model. They told me pretty much the same thing. I sent in the rangefinder that wasn't working, and a few weeks later they sent me a brand new one with no invoice. Was kind of weird. Never heard from them after I sent in my rangefinder, and the new one just showed up.

I had a similar experience. My Leupold that was several years old stopped working. I sent it in for service and they sent me a brand new model.

This thread perpetuates a belief that is no longer justified, based on my experience.

My wife gave me a GX-4i2 as a 2016 Christmas present. The top Leupold model at the time. Two year warranty. Sticker price was about $650 as I recall, and discounted price was about $450.

About a year ago one segment of the left-most display digit went out. No biggie, it was easy to tell if the digit was a one or a two. More recently a segment of the middle digit went out, making it sometimes hard to tell the yardage - and annoying. I have never dropped or damaged this unit. Looks like new.

I sent the unit to Leupold for repair. They contacted me and told me that the unit is unrepairable, is out of warranty, and that my options are to buy the current model from them at 60% off the (inflated) retail price or have them send the unit back to me. I told them to send it back.

I picked this unit out. I picked it out on the basis of the perceived quality of the Leupold brand, as well as the fabled Leupold customer service. I am disappointed on both accounts.

As far as I am concerned Leupold is currently living off its reputation, and not much more. The performance of other units is as good or better than comparable Leupold units, as demonstrated by reviews and customer sat ratings. The reliability of my Leupold unit is unacceptable, especially considering the price. The customer service is just like any other company, from what I can tell - If it's out of warranty, is out of warranty.

To anybody who is reading this, I suggest that you choose a rangefinder based on the features and price that fit your needs. If the price/performance of a Leupold unit is what you need, then go for it. But do not be like me; do not believe for an instant that you will be buying a superior product from a superior company. You won’t be.

My GX3i crapped out but they sent a replacement for free. The replacement has been flaky but has kept working for the most part so overall I've gotten my money's worth. Can't say the product has been all that wonderful though.

As mentioned on multiple other threads, there are lasers at much less price that work beautifully.. from solid companies, the days of Leupold/Bushnell being ahead of the curve in technology and reliability has passed. Technology is always copied and catches up eventually, as is usually the case components are typically made in the same factory for all manufactures and the cost comes down.

Similar experience for me. Leupold is off the board for me; suggest others look into others (Vortex has lifetime warranty, but have no experience with the product).

I have an update.

First off, check out the list prices on Leupold lasers. They are wildly inflated and nobody sells them at anything near these prices. So, what is going on? Seems to me that if you take 60% off the Leupold list price you get to what a competitive product might sell for.

In my case, the display on my Leupold was actually worse when I got it back than when I sent it in. It was unreadable, and I had to do something. I wound up buying the Bushnell Tour V4 (non-slope model). Now, I am under no illusions that customer service will be any better with Bushnell than Leupold - I know that it won’t be. I bought Bushnell because their rangefinders consistently get good reviews.

This unit cost me $255 new. In my opinion, it is a better unit than my Leupold, in that it is faster and finds targets a bit better. The Leupold gave distances to the nearest 1/10th of a yard. But who cares, Johnny Miller in his best days never had his irons dialed in with such precision, and I am no Johnny Miller - 1/10th yard readouts are an answer in search of a question, in my view.

I believe that the replacement model for my Leupold is the GX-4i3. The retail price is $750. Reduce this price by 60% and you are left with $300.

There is the GX-3i3, which is non-slope, hence might be a better apples to apples comparison to what I bought. This one is a mere $650, so I could have bought it from Leupold for $260. Which exactly supports my statement that the Leupold suggest retail prices are so inflated that you are getting nothing meaningful from the “60% off” failed product replacement thing.
