TM Hi-Toe finish removal

I’m wondering if anyone has tried or had luck removing the copper finish on the Hi-Toe wedges to make them “raw?”

 

If you have, how did you do it? And did you have to pull the shaft to get it done?

Could probably sand blast them, my 64 degree has a good bit of the bottom off after prolonged bunker practice

I thought about that. I was wondering pickling solution might work?

Make about 5:1 mix of hydrogen peroxide & white vinegar, soak it overnight. Won't harm the shaft or ferrule.

Off topic here, but does anyone know how to remove the blue finish from a mizuno wedge?

I did this to my Hi-Toe and the peroxide/vinegar combo takes that finish off fast! Anyone played with the finish stripped for long enough to know whether it will color up and rust? Mine is pretty shiny and I had brutal glare on a flop shot this past weekend. I'm in a very dry part of the country and usually only play in the afternoons so I may have to go hit some balls with the dew still on the range to get it going that way.

Get a scotchbrite 3m wheel in coarse/fine/medium or a 2x72 belt, it will take it off in 30secs.

 

You can also use ferric acid.

You didnt make the HiToe raw you just took the coating off.. Until this year the HiToes where all plated first then colored in copper or black.. My point is, you can take the black or the copper and remove the finish like above, but it will not rust as its still nickle plated.. To remove the plating you will need to sand blast or dechrome with crazy elector chemical.. but you will remove weight and possibly ruin the wedge for you..

I did the vinegar/H2O2 treatment on my HiToes (I wanted a more consistent looking finish after the copper started to wear on the face and sole) and mine came out with a rose-gold(ish) finish. I like it.

I just tarnished my Hi Toe to a dull gray using a solution that I picked up from Jo Ann Fabrics. Just submerged the head in warm water with some of the solution dissolved in it for about 10 min. The finish matches the grey in the pockets on the back of the head. Paintfill and ferrule undamaged. No issues with glare. Here are some before and after pics and a pic of the solution package. It costs about $10.

It is the same durability as the natural patina. Just played a round and you can see a little copper color showing through on the sole. It is more homogeneous than the natural patina on another Hi Toe I have and more grey than brown. The other wedge is soaking at the moment to get the same look.

I like it a lot in soft conditions, soft sand and the rough. It works well on tight lies if you use a little forward shaft lean and it is fine with a slightly open face. I would say it is near impossible to consistently hit a wide open faced flop from a firm tight lie with it, the leading edge just gets so high in that position. I am a 5 hcp without a very impressive short game so that isn't a shot I should try often. I got it because we have had so much rain in Wisco that our course is saturated. I switched from a more hinge and hold to a use the bounce style of chip and pitch and this wedge is very good at that style. It is like a K grind on steroids.

 

I actually have a Hi Toe 60 with the 4 way cambered sole on the way to have available for firm conditions on trips over the winter. I had an ATV grind when they first came out and didn't like it, that leading edge just knifed into the turf for me.
