Struggling to switch from strong to a more neutral grip.

I have an extremely strong grip. No matter how hard I try to get to a more neutral position, I revert back. My right hand gets way under. Left hand showing at least three knuckles most of the time. Anyone else have this issue? I make it work for the most part, but on bad days I hit nothing but low bullets from de-lofting to much. I'd really like to make to the change. I know it seems like it should be an easy fix but I am struggling to do it.

Consider that you may just trade low bullets on bad days to something else, probably to much spin want to drift right shots. I start every year with an “improvement” plan. Usually I just find a different way to hit the same shot I already can hit without thinking about. But now I get to spend more mental energy to do the same thing. I still have a miss but it’s different than the old miss. Not better just different.

Many many people have strong grips and don't hit low bullets. I'm not saying a grip change won't fix your problem. Simply noting that self diagnosis is often a bad idea. Especially when you are conflating a mildly strong grip with delivering less dynamic loft.

I am working on weakening my strong grip as well. If im not conscious of gripping the club with a weaker grip every single time , Ill grip it with the old, strong grip. Its getting better though, I think it just takes time, and persistence.

It seems like an easy fix, but doesn't mean that it is. A grip can be used to compensate for things and usually does when you are not swinging properly.

 

I used the 3 knuckle strong grip forever. I got down to a 2 with it for a little while. It is something you can manage and work with. I only had two misses, my draw would turn into a hook or I would block it straight right. If I missed one way, it was very easy to go to the other miss. But on off-days it was hard to find the middle ground.

When I first switched to the more neutral grip, it completely altered my swing or at least felt like it. If I swung the same way as the strong grip, I'd hit push fades. When I tried to feel like I was squaring the club up, I would come over the top, with different results.

 

Long story short - It's been 3 years and I worked on re-building my swing. The strong grip, for me at least, compensated for a lack of pivot, a big sway and poor turning. Without realizing it, I was using a lot of arms and just kind of slinging my hands through the impact zone.

 

Not saying everyone with this grip has to re-build their swing. But for me, it opened up my eyes that I couldn't go to a more neutral grip without looking at other things in the swing. I just figured, why switch to a more neutral grip and new misses, and not focus and fix the other things?

 

I'm glad I did too, as I am now playing more consistent golf and feel like my swing is much more fundamentally sound.

It takes repetition to form a habit. You might find it helpful to keep a club around and every now and then grip it and waggle it, (during commercial breaks, or during work breaks, etc.). Pay close attention to how you set your hands on the club and soon enough it will become second nature. I did this when I was switching to a left hand low putting grip and it worked well.
