P730 Raw's...Thank you Doug Oughton!!

Been fawning over the raw iron pictures I’m seeing on the forum, so I thought I’d give it a run. I have been playing older TM TP MC irons for years, and wanted to move to blades. So, with that in mind, I found a set of P730 heads on the forum, ordered up some c-taper s+, ferrules from BB&F and grips for this new gamer set.

 

I am lucky to live in Sacramento near a wonderful refinisher Doug Oughton (oughtonsgolf.com), and took the parts over to Doug to do the work. He stripped the chrome and nickel, did the assembly, spec’d out the clubs to my asking (all for a **VERY** reasonable price), and BAM…here is the final product. I HIGHLY recommend Doug and his work:

I love raw irons and I am a fan of the P730 irons......but doesn’t this look like poor quality forging?

Hate to say it as I am usually a big fan of raw finishes... Is it the quality of the stripping or the quality of the forging? Something doesn't look right on this, almost like a cheap copy

Well... Bought these from a reputable member so I doubt they are fake. Strip job is good imo. They look good, feel good. I'm happy...

Mr. Oughton is amazing. This is the after of a set of Hogan Radials he did for me. He stays engaged with you throughout the job and his prices are more than fair. It’s hard to find his website but I’m glad I did!

I thought it's the opposite? I think it was Mizuno early on that would use mirror chrome finishing to highlight how good their forgings are, chrome actually accentuates any faults.

These look unreal! Love the ferrules. Personally I'd chalk those marks of "poor forging" up to the iron being raw unpolished steel. As long as they feel as you'd expect, I would not worry about it. Looking forward to seeing how those beauties rust up

Yes, that's what I've heard too.

Maybe the forging and grinding was poor, so they used something like a bondo like filler before plating.

Makes my sotmach turn looking at those photos.

I don't get the negative comments either. If you don't like the look of blemishes and imperfections then stick with chrome irons but to each their own. Good grief, if you don't have anything nice to say (ask your grandparents for the rest of the phrase)

Not meant to be negative just an observation. I have had 3 sets of raw irons and many raw wedges and I have never seen those “imperfections” on any of them.

@justasgood , not as much your post as the 'stomach turning' post....At any rate, I am really happy with them, they feel great, and look good in the bag. Excited to share more on the forum going forward.

 

Outside of showing them off to my fellow WRX'ers, wanted to put the support out there for Doug as he did a great job and I have seen a ton of posts about chrome removal (I searched a bunch before I took mine in)...thought this post would add value to those looking to do the same that I did

I think they look great. Ignore the stupidity critiquing the finish. It's going to freaking rust anyway... it's going to get scarred up from sand and rocks anyway.

I think they are an awesome set and with patina will look even better. Where is Doug located?

I've deplated quite a few iron sets. Its common. The plating hides a lot. Especially with a mush buff Cu plate. Gives you a little more appreciation to National Custom for their work. Takes a lot of finesse to get them that smooth.

 

These irons look great. Eye blinding chrome is the worst.

Loved these so much I just sent my new Apex Pros off to Doug to get them stripped to look like Xander’s. He is popping on some BB&F ferrules on there for me too while the heads are off. He also offered to swing weight them back to replace what weight is lost with the chrome. Really excited to get those in. Great pricing too well below any golf shop I found and made it worth it to ship them cross country.
