Fairway woods of the deck....

Need some help

I have always had a little trouble hitting fairway woods out of the fairway...

Does anyone have any tips for me to try to work on?

try a 4 wood or 5 wood , i never get enough heighth on a 3 wood and usually it is too much club for me when actually trying to approach a green with it, i feel it rolls alot more and gets me in trouble as well and u dont give up that much distance imo but u gain a bit more forgiveness im

I played today and I felt like I was better on the Par 5's with with hybrid then my 3 wood.

For a mid handicapper such as myself, I like the combination of either a 5 wood and a 4 iron replacement hybrid, or else what I currently use which is a 4 wood and both a 3 and 4 iron replacement hybrids. I only hit the 4 wood off the tee or off the fairway if it is a level lie and sitting up nicely. Otherwise, I will choose one of the hybrids or even a mid iron.

 

My own personal swing thought on all these longer clubs is slow and easy on the takeaway.

I LOVE hitting fairway woods off the deck. I'm a lock with my 5 wood. its got a super small head, which helps. but I don't even tee it up if I use it on the tee box. I just toss it on the ground and take it off the deck.

 

keys for me are to come at it like I'm hitting a driver, just with a slightly steeper plane. one big one for me is to slide the club head back away from the ball for atleast a few inches. since you have to "sweep" your fairway wood, you want to use to first part of your backswing the replicate what you want the club to do on the way down, just in the opposite direction. people have heard over and over again to move the ball BACK with fairway woods, I actually play it off my left heal (or even further forward if I want to launch it high), which helps me to slide the club back instead of lifting it off the ground. I also play a fade, so you might not want it that far forward if you want a consistently straight or right to left flight. . .but make sure to slide the club away from the ball, no matter where you have the ball.

 

another key for me is width in the swing. I might get away with losing my width with a wedge, but if you want consistent contact with a longer club, you need to keep that club out away from your head.

 

I've found that if I both slide the club back and keep the swing wide (for me, the thought for width is a straight left arm), then when I get to the top I'm in the perfect position to really go after the ball without fear of a mishit. that allows me to worry about what I'm doing with the shot (low, high, right, left), instead of just trying to get the clubhead on the ball.

 

note; I do still take a divot with fairway woods, a-la tiger, so I am hitting slightly down on the ball, but the feeling is definetly one of sweeping, in contrast to an iron swing with its downward blow.

im a high capper and i have had some success with my woods of the deck but lose the consistency i crave. i will usually use a 7 wood tops off the deck but find that hybrids are much easier to hit at this point in my game. hence i only use hybrids. hopefull when my swing and game improve i can progress to woods.
