Made a birdie today w/o a single good shot

Have never birdied the 18th at my new home course. I generally played like crap today, and have been for a month or more. Anyway, got on a bit of a hot streak on the back 9.

 

Get to 18 and pulled the daylights out of my drive but it ended up OK, but in the right rough. Had a clean shot at the green, but couldn’t see the pin because of a hill. Grabbed what should have been the wrong club apparently. Hit it weak and off the toe and pulled it. Figured it would be short of the green or maybe in the right bunker.

 

Drive up to the hole and see my ball 6 inches from the cup. Tap in for birdie. Apparently I had too much club but I got extremely lucky that I hit it poorly and pulled it.

 

There’s a hill that feeds everything left and toward the green, so I’m guessing my ball rolled down the hill and got kicked to the left.

 

Any other similar stories like this one? I’ve had plenty of pars without hitting a good shot, but never a birdie.

My father and I played 36 yesterday (9 hole course x4) and I parred number 8 three times. Each time I teed off with a nasty pull, botched my second shot, and stuck my third to within 8-10 feet. I was almost happy to bogey it the fourth time, as my first three shots had started out almost identical. He also started the day off with a birdie after hitting a worm burner into the right rough to start, attempted to hit a hero slice around a tree and struck it dead straight into the left hand rough. Easy PW to 12 feet and sank the putt.

A couple years after I started playing golf, I was playing a solo round while on vacation at the beach. Second hole is a short Par 4 with a dinky little "lagoon" right in front of the tee box but then flat and wide open all the way to the green. Pretty much drivable for big hitters, for me it's like driver than PW or 9-iron usually.

 

I drop-kicked a driver and it cleared the water with a couple yards to spare (the carry is only about 100 yards) then rolled a little. Second shot was a bladed 7-iron that never got higher than two feet off the ground but rolled 140 yards directly at the hole.

 

The ball clanged into the flagstick at high speed, almost stayed in the hole and settled a foot away. The group teeing off on the next hole heard the ball hit the stick, looked back and thought I'd hit a great shot. They gave me a polite "golf clap" as I walked to the green. I just smiled and tapped in my birdie. Woo Hoo!

My first eagle was similar. I was probably 12-13 years old. There was a par 4 that in a straight line was probably only 250 yards but was and "L" shape with tall trees blocking the direct route. I topped my 3 wood off the tee but managed to get it to the corner in the fairway. Took out a 7 iron and bladed the crap out of it. This was a 2 tiered green and the pin was on the lower tier. It rolled half way up the slope, back down, and into the hole.

I shot an eagle on a par 4 about a month ago. It was a slight dog leg left with trees and heavy brush lining both sides. Smashed my driver at least 280 and gave it a sweet draw, which is unusual for me as I tend to be more of a fade player, and lobbed up with a 52. There is an inclined bunker at the front the the green and you can't see where you land on the green until you drive up to it. I looked around and couldn't see my ball and thought i must've skied it past the green, but in my head i'm thinking that there was no way as my second shot was only about 115 yards out and I hit it straight on and pin high. I looked everywhere until my buddy checked the hole and started clapping. I couldn't believe it at first but I must admit that it was one heck of a shot. I've been able to sink more birdies lately due to some solid drives, which is a skill that has improved substantially for me considering I was a miserable slicer for a while.

I almost made a hole in one yesterday off a thinned tee shot. It rolled slowly right up the green, rolled into the pin but didn't drop. Slowly went around the edge and ended up a few inches behind the hole. It was very windy and the flagstick was getting blown towards me rejecting the ace. I would be irate had I not had (once) a hole in one before (and of course if it wasn't a badly thinned shot). Tapped in for birdie. My thinking is any birdie is a good birdie, if you hit it inches from the hole it's still a good shot. We get some unlucky bounces and breaks in golf so may as well enjoy the good breaks !

Not bad mate, I've been there a few times myself. I call them jumpers since they tend to hit flag and jump out. I always blame bugs bunny and his magnet for cagging it for me. lol

Par 5. Drove it in the hazard, dropped, hit 4 iron into a green side bunker, holed out for birdie. Would have been a tough 2-putt if the bunker shot didn't go in.

Did the exact same thing a couple weeks ago. Tee shot was a low duck hook that happened to run pretty decently because it was dry. Second shot was a thinned mid-iron that ran all the way to about 10 feet from the pin. Putt was also not great, but happened to ram into the flagstick and drop.

 

I felt good running off that green. Felt like I just got away with something.

Nice! Care to divulge how you've managed to cure your slice? I've been fighting off a driver hook for quite some time and finally figured out my arms were outracing my torso. So I slow down my downswing and hold on to some lag and that did the trick.

I did something similar last year, but my ball did (briefly) touch grass- #4 at my club is a 585-yard par 5. I pulled my drive into a fairway bunker. I then hit my second shot into another fairway bunker. My third shot ended up in a greenside bunker, and I holed that one for birdie.

A ton of practice at the range is what really helped. I was also one whose hands would get way ahead of my torso, but my club face was way open and it was detrimental to my driving. For me, keeping my swing tight is what has been helping me. Swinging through is vital for keeping my slices at bay. For my draw, i just keep my club face closed, opening my stance, and positioning the ball more centered instead of behind the ball of my front foot to give me more of the in-to-out contact. I play an M3 as well, so I've been tweaking the adjustability a bit to see how exaggerated the results are. It works wonderfully for me, but I know not everyone will agree. Take yourself out to the range and practice playing around with your stances and you'll notice how much it affects your ball flights off the tee.

The OP isn't alone. The other day due to arthritic joints my ball striking was off; I am being kind to myself. lol Yet I still found two birdies, one was a 15' putt from the fringe, the other ball finished 2" from the cup for a tap-in, and walked off 18 finishing 2 over. I love this game.

I'm definitely not looking forward to the days that arthritis kicks in. I love the amount of improvisation that players adapt with to keep their game going. Way to work it brother.

What's really funny is when you have a 12ft sliding downhill putt and you hit it horrible and turn away in disgust then hear it go in the cup! I've done it once or twice and seen it happen a few times for other, one particular hole on our course is notorious for this putt.

Thank You! Been a jock since HS. Unfortunately, arthritis became part of my life about ten years back. There are good and not so good days, and some days especially challenging like the day I mentioned above. We find a way.

Sliced a ball off the tee to the right. In tree trouble, trying to hit an approach wedge over the tree. Instead, blade it straight through the tree, rolls up the hill to a foot. Tap in birdie.

When i joined a club in 1978 (I was 25 years old and just starting to get a bit serious about golf) I kept track of each hole as I birdied it for the first time. The last one to fall was hole #8, a short, downhill, tightly treed par 4 with a tricky green. One day I shoved my drive into the right trees but had an "opening"...which I missed so badly the ball found its way to the the next opening to the left, which directed the ball well left of the green, into some tall trees. Several ricochets later my ball found its way 3 inches from the cup. Birdie!!

the first ace I ever witnessed (not mine) was a cold topped iron down a hill through a carpet of fallen leaves. We couldn't see the ball until it got to the green, but we could follow its progress by the movement of the leaves. Eventually got to the green where we could see it roll from front to back and disappear into the cup. One!

I learned a long time ago to not complain about a shot until you see where it goes. That pull you hit when you are trying to hit a fade - keep quiet until you see where it goes. Your buddies will think you are a much better golfer than you really are.

Thanks. I've been trying to put some pressure on my driver at the range, hitting to targets and such. I can hit it well on the range, but during the round when the fairways narrows, not so much...

Par 5. Drive went into the right waste area. Cold topped my 2nd about 20yds. Blocked a hybrid into the adjacent fairway for my 3rd. Hit a 110yd wedge up over a tree and 6ft from the pin for my 4th. Drained the putt for par.

 

Thank goodness there are no pictures on the scorecard!

I flat skulled my way around the front 9 last week, not one single solid strike with anything on approach shots. I got lucky bounces each time though. Shot one over 36, my second lowest score for 9.

 

This week wasn't much better, chunked too many this time, no lucky bounces either. Lotsa bogeys, shot 46...

 

Should be -3 next week!!
