Goodbye Mr. 3-wood...fare thee well, Sr. 7-iron. I knew you well, but now you're both in the closet.

 

I'm really looking for a 12-15 degree driver so that I'll have a 9-10 degree jump from driver to my "next longest club."

 

The set is obviously:

 

Titleist 915 with UST Mamiya Proforce AvixCore Tour, playing at 44" which is my "standard."

 

The greatest hybrid ever made, purchased by me for $19 out of the bargain bid. Pure perfection.

 

6-P, less 7-iron is TM SpeedBlade with factory 85G steel.

 

Strong wedge is the 52/8  Srixon Forged.

 

Weak wedge is the 58/15 Callaway.

 

2007 Slighter 1-100 Tacoma is my current (and future go to).

 

Do I miss the 7-iron? Rarely. Do I miss the 3-wood? Even more rarely.

 

By the way, I'm not enamored with either my new lime-green Iomic Absolute X putter grip or the new GP. 

 

I play the white Titleists when I feel like it and the yellow when, I'll bet you know when...

 

I always use the short(ish) tees and my beloved carbon fiber divot repair tool.

 

Believe me, you want one!

Do folks commit full time to this setup, and if so do you go ahead and sell the unused irons?  I have mint 718 AP2 4, 6, 8, and P that I could sell for some decent change.

I was wondering that as well.  I'm a recent convert to the minimalist setup and like you, have 716 AP1's 4, 6, & 8 that are mint and not getting much use.  Essentially, could make another minimalist bag using the even irons lol..

Well the options are have 2 sets depending on the course and the ideal par 3 distances, have 2 sets and a spare for those friends or family who may join you but dont have their own clubs, or sell.

 

I sold my spares but I have 2 sets of minimalist clubs depending on conditions. One for dry and one for wet

I sold all mine, so I don't get tempted into adding more, moving irons around etc.... Figured out what's best for me since I started this adventure about 5 years ago.... Driver, 5 wood, 24 crossover, 7, 9, gap, sw & putter gets me round my course ok

I’m not typically a minimalist, but with winter here now and it being the off-season I decided to give it a shot as I like to carry in the colder weather. 
 

I decided on a 9 club setup:

 

Ping G410 LST

TaylorMade SIM UDI Utility

Callaway CF16 4, 6, 8, PW

Callaway MD5 55, 60

Scotty Cameron Fastback 1.5

Yep those Adams hybrids are hard to beat--- I have a 19* like yours and a 20* offset

My bag, like most here, is constantly evolving. This is my most recent set up. Put the smart sole in the bag as it has beenparticularly wet and I thought the massive sole would help, but I like the cbx wedge so much I think I'll get another in 56 and bend it to 57 for my trouble wedge. The smart sole does its job but there is no feel and it's so chunky to look down on. 

My "new to me" oddysey double wide arm lock putter arrives tomorrow to fill that last slot.

I finally put together my mini bag and played my 1st 9 holes with it.

 

I was looking for something I can use when playing a quick 9 or playing with my kids. Also I was hoping to go "retro" with clubs I was using in back in college when I was still a decent player.

 

8 clubs - 

Driver - 983k (this is a 10.5 when I had a 8 back in the day)

Irons - 695mb 5,7,9 (as close as I can find to 690mb for cheap)

Hybrid - 913h 19° (I used a 690mb 2 iron in college which I am NOT going to do again...)

Wedges - Vokey 50, 60

Putter - TM Spider mini (my normal putter)

Bag - Titleist Sunday bag (the most expensive part of this experiment)

 

After 9 holes, it worked pretty well with 7/9 GIR's on a tight florida course with water everywhere.

 

The driver is not a good fit for me (I found it clearing out my dad's attic). It launched too high and was super spinny so I may try to find the exact 8° version I had back in the day.

 

I am looking forward to using this more, walking more, and having fun just hitting golf shots instead of worrying about a score/match.

Wedges: GW: Wilson harmonized 50*. Crappy club, but gets the job done for $19.99 lol. I'll probably invest in a nicer gap wedge sometime in the near future. SW: Titleist SM6 56*. my local shop gave me a good deal at $75 new.

Putter: Retro Ping Kushin I took from my dad because I like the feel of it so much.

Bag: Old Sun Mountain Sunday bag I found at my High School's lost and found. Works beautifully.

 

Its pretty ragtag, but I've played my best golf just using this setup. I shot a 37 the other day with it, and I like the package so much its been my daily bag whenever I go out. I seem to not only enjoy the game more but go lower. Anyway, that's my minimalist bag.

Nothing better than having the cheapest set up and beating your friends who have every club! Congrats on the great round.

I feel like professional golf needs to go to a 9/10 club max. Make them have to put more thought into their setups and make them hit more feel based shots. They're incredible so it may not make a huge difference, but it will definitely cost a few strokes per tournament.

If I remember correctly, the blade length of the 2 iron was pretty long making it relatively easy to hit, especially off the tee and for the tiger "stinger". Off of the ground was a different story.

It looks pretty scary behind the ball, but I don't think it's any harder than my 716 TMB 2 iron. The TMB definitely goes further, but its also 2 degrees stronger.

So I am quite a new golfer (playing for just over a year) and didn't want to invest too much cash. I found that I really enjoy walking the course and realised that my gapping seemed too tight if carrying all my irons so started to drop clubs. I now have 9 clubs in the bag and often only carry 8 (generally drop driver or 4W), enjoy playing with this setup much more than when I had 14 clubs, it is easy to select what to hit and easier to get clubs into/out of the bag. 

 

Below is lofts/lengths/yardages for this set along with prices paid for clubs (all clubs are from smaller less popular brands to help keep costs down). Would recommend building a set this way for anyone as it really makes you think about what clubs you are buying and what their usage is, I actually think it has helped me as a beginner to understand the game better.

Inesis sold by Decathlon do a nice looking lightweight bag for not much money. Says it is designed for 7 clubs however I am sure it would be good for 8 or 9.

I use a similar size back for my 9 club set. I like the look of these. Might pop into my local decathlon after lockdown to check it out as this is nicer than my old slazenger bag

yeah I've had my eye on a moonlite but I've always used stand bags. I love the size of a carry bag but have trouble imaniging getting around without a stand
