I posted this in the WITB section the other day but I felt like it belonged here as well. Currently playing:

D- Titleist 913 D2

3w- TM V Steel

7w- PING G25

6, 8, PW- Mizuno MP-53

54*- Vokey 252.08 bent to 54*

P- PING Zing 2i

FC80209D-6418-4754-9219-1AA73BE8C32D.jpeg

I need to update this picture and WITB. I just picked up a Jones Players Series and have started playing a MacGregor laminated driver and fairway. I’m still experimenting with the 7 wood, I got rid of the PING and now have a V Steel. Last time I went out I played D, 4, 6, 8, PW, 54, P. The 7 wood would replace the 4i if I put it in the bag, but I seem to hit the 4i a lot straighter and high enough for what I need it to do.

These old Jones bags with the small stand at the bottom are the best bags ever IMO. I wonder why manufacturers no longer make these bags with short legs on the bottom half of the bag.  They have great balance, are automatic, prop up the bag at a good angle, take up less space, and can be used on a push trolley without the legs getting in the way at the top.  The more modern Sunday bags with small stands tend to have them at the top where they are manual and set the bag up super low to the ground.

I have two of these, one with a single strap and one with two straps.  I do much prefer the version with two straps.  The design is such that it allows for a comfortable carrying experience whether you're using one or both straps.

Although they're a "small" bag, I have no issues carrying 14 with it either.  Usually very little to no club tangle.

I keep looking at the "new" Jones bags and they don't hit the spot for me.  From the hard plastic tops on some of them (just why), to the long legs... I think they're missing out on a lot that made these bags amazing.

I got this one really cheap eBay and I liked it so much I figured all Jones bags were amazing.

Since I spent next to nothing I thought I may as well get a new one with a few extra features, however the new one I got only lasted a few months before the stand mechanism broke. Jones were great and sent me a new one, but ultimately I was too nervous about the quality so I sold the replacement. It just never felt solid.

The original Jones like this one are built so well. The guy I bought it off said he bought it on holiday in the states (I'm in Australia) when they were first released. All the zips still work, stand mechanism is perfect, and the canvas is holding up well. Hopefully it's got many more years of service left.

You found a gem for sure!  Similarly, I found mine locally second hand at a great price.  I've tried so many other bags new and old and it is still by far my favourite.  As you said, it is rock solid and I hope it keeps holding up for years to come.

If you come across anything else that compares, please let me know 🙂

Would be interested in how you're liking the Jones Players Series coming from the Ping Moonlite as well.  I have an older Moonlite with the single standup strap and it's a good minimalist bag for 9 holes in good weather.  But I personally miss the two straps and it doesn't quite have enough pockets or waterproofing to allow me to be prepared for the changing weather this time of year.  So, I don't get to use it as much as I'd like. I guess that's by design and that's ok.

The Moonlite is great, I’m not getting rid of it, my son is currently using it. When I first got the Jones I had buyers remorse. The strap was really uncomfortable and the water bottle holder doesn’t work as well as the Ping’s. After two 9 hole rounds the strap has broken in well and now it is very comfortable. As for the water bottle holder, I probably won’t be using it for water. I may put my water in the large pocket, I’m still unsure. I am beginning to love the Jones. The big plus is that clubs slide in and out so much easier than they do in the Moonlite.

If you want a bag to be weather proof, the Ping is probably your best bet if you’re wanting a carry bag. I’m not sure about other models, but the last two iterations of the Moonlite have a waterproof bottom. They also have a removable 2nd strap. I never used mine, for some reason when I use a bag with double straps I get a headache.

I've just started to play with a minimalist bag. Over the past year or so I have only really had 10, sometimes 11 clubs in the bag as I found myself not using certain clubs very much or in some cases, even once during a round. I figured I should be able to adapt to a reduced set no problem and I was right. I didn't score any worse than if I was using my normal clubs.

I don't currently have any pictures but will try and get some soon but below is what's in my minimalist bag.

Driver: TaylorMade R7 Superquad 10.5*.

Hybrid: Ben Hogan Edge CFT 24*

Irons: Tommy Armour 845s Silver Scot 6, 8, PW, SW

Putter: Odyssey Dual Force Rossie II (I had this since 1998)

Bag: Druids Sunday / Pencil.

As you can see, I don't exactly have modern equipment and I don't have lots of equipment either. So apart from the Tommy Armours irons and the Druids bag, all the other equipment I have mentioned is straight out of my main bag. My gaming irons are Ben Hogan Apex Plus.

It was funny when I played. I walked up to the tee box just before my tee time and there was 3 people standing there. They weren't due off until after me but were hoping to get away early so they asked if they could join me. They then started to take the mick out of my set up, well, the irons anyway. Commenting on how old they were etc. To be honest, they are in great condition and I don't think they look dated at all but anyway, I just laughed before smashing driver straight down the middle.

I 2 putted for a steady par on the first before just missing a 25 footer for eagle on the 2nd. The 3 men I was playing with were playing army golf with all their latest and greatest gear that they took great pride in telling me was all 'this years' models and after they all put their tee shots in the woods on the 3rd, I just played on by myself.

I finished 6 over par for the 18 holes which is pretty much standard golf for me.

I was recently thinking about getting some new irons but after playing with the 1988 Armours which are 2 degrees weaker than my Hogans and shooting around my usual score, it's making me wonder if there's any point?

Hit what works best for you!

New gear can help some,  in my experience….. They just come with cooler headcovers.

No, irons in particular haven't changed much....just the jacked up lofts. Play what makes you happy

This is the reason I started bringing a half set in the first place. I noticed that even when I played with 14 I would gravitate toward the even numbered irons for most of my shots. It was almost like a superstition or something (my sport growing up was baseball, that may be where the superstitions began lol). It seemed that every time I hit and odd numbered iron I would pull it 30 yards 😂. I'm sure it's something that just got in my head, but no my bag sure is lighter and my decisions are easier.

Really happy with my setup and how it's playing (or potentially playing, if my swing can ever hold itself together).  Use the MNML bag which works great for walking the courses.  May tweak the top of the bag to driver + driving iron if I can find a driver I can hit as well as this 3W, but doubt I'll ever go back to double digit clubs in the bag.

Got fitted last week and did a makeover using stuff I acquired over the winter. New stuff: Sunday bag, 13.5* 2015 BB driver,  Mavrik Max 7I, and Mac Daddy CB 58/12 lob wedge.

Driver has a 45g 41 inch EvenFlow Shaft.  Mavrik Max lite 4I cut down to 37 inches, Mavrik Max 7* cut down to 35 56/16 inches  Really light clubs but my practice swings have excellent dispersion and  great ball flights.  My normal shot shape is a fade.  My typical miss is a slice.  My slices end up in the same area, so my misses are consistent.

Got rid of the jumbo grip  on the putter and put on an Odyssey White Hot Pro grip.

I cut down all the long clubs to a length for appropriate for ladies petite, shortening them by 2 inches compared to standard men's lengths.  Total of seven clubs.

At the fitting I learned I could hit a 3HL off the deck.  After cutting down the rest of my clubs to ladies petite I have enough for another minimalist 4 club set.

If I need to slice the ball  off the fairway around the trees I can do it with my 15*  Diablo 3 wood.  Or use it off the tee.  299grams, 40.5 inches Swing Weight C3.

32* 2016 Big Bertha OS 35.5 inches

58/11 Mac Daddy MD3 lob wedge 33 inches

2 ball Ten 31 inches

Just picked up this Titleist Sunday bag to try with my minimalist set.  It seems to be the perfect minimalist bag for what I carry.  It's much better than the Jones Original I had tried last year, I found that bag bulky for what it was and the pockets were weird.  If it's wet then I'll just carry my Hoofer Lite, but on nice dry days this bag should be great.  It has the exact pockets I need and I can easily reach my water bottle while walking...

Nice bag yeah for minimilust rounds the Jones can be overkill even though I love my Jones Classic--- That modern Titleist bag may be water resistant so wet rounds may not be an issue

what putter is that? Looks a lot like my Ping B-90I which I have threatned to drag back out in fact it is in the car for this mornings round. Gonna look funny my vintage sticks and persimmon with that monstrosity sticking up but by damn I gotta do something. My putting lately has been atrocious and streaky and now I can not blame bad greens either. And yes I have close to 100 putters and I can putt just as bad with one as the other. A few years back I used it when I got bad so now I think it is time to drag it out again. Cant do any worse

C10 51" - as I've aged - seems I hunch over with 34". I now stand more upright which allows me to see the line more clearly - using the broomstick.

It's winter time and I always keep coming back to this.

Thinking I'm going to game a half set for my Men's league this weekend and walk.

Here's What I'm thinking

  • Callaway Epic Speed 9.5 - Hzrudus RDX Smoke Black 6.5 60g
  • Apex UW 19 Hzrdus RDX Smoke 6.0 70G
  • Taylormade P790 5iron (bent to 22) - Essentially my 4iron.
  • Srixon 765- 6, 8, 9
  • SM7 50.08F, SM8 54.12D
  • Odyssey Tri Hot Triple Wide

I could swap the 54 for my 58 but I feel I can play just as many shots with that as the 54.
