My wife and I will be taking our annual 2-week golf trip to Scottsdale in October. In the past we have taken 2-day side trips to Tucson and Sedona. I was thinking about a side trip to Prescott this year. I saw pretty good reviews for Antelope Hills and Stoneridge. Any thoughts? Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Both are nice courses. I personally prefer AH North of the three but Stoneridge has amazing views and probably more polished. AH is a basic public course with few frills, but also much cheaper. I play there every October during over seed and enjoy the cooler weather and solid conditions.

 

AH north is tree lined with sloped bent grass greens that can get very quick. The restaurant is basic but nice spot for a after round drink.

 

AH south is very different - wide open and shorter. Probably not worth the drive to play the south but worth it for 36 holes.

 

Stoneridge has a lot of elevation change. Greens were slowish last time but still lush. Should be in good shape in October assuming we get a decent amount of rain during monsoon season.

Stoneridge is a hokie, gimmicky golf course that is not that much fun. But it may be ok for a trip type round.

 

I would see if you can get on Talking Rock - there are often specials to get on there even though it is private. Prescott Lakes is private as well, but sometimes allows public play.

If you have a home club and can have them call, it is usually pretty easy to get on the Rim and Chaparral Pines in Payson. Both are good courses and in great shape early October (can get iffy later in October). If it were me I would play both rounds at the Rim. It is one of my favorite layouts, and is always conditioned well. Chaparral Pines is tree lined but playable, however the tight layout wears a bit tedious for 18 holes. Both courses IMO are better than what you will find in Prescott.

Stoneridge was fun to play. Antelope was also fun to play. You say you have been to Sedona, but have you played Seven Canyons? If you watch the GC7, or whatever it is commercial on golf channel, it was shot at Seven Canyons. Red rocks everywhere. Every single hole is a post card view, gorgeous course, lots of elevation changes. I used to live about 2 miles from that course in Sedona. Never got tired of playing there. Also the Ridge and Oak Creek CC are great courses. Oak Creek is an older course. I loved the Ridge. Gorgeous views and beautiful course. Both those courses are in The Village of Oak Creek just south of Sedona.

I would go to Sedona 20 times to Prescott 0 for golf.

Played Stoneridge today. Tees and fairways were great, but greens were very slow. Not sure why they don’t cut them down because they have a lot of grass.

 

Course is tough but I enjoy it. It does have several tees shots that are less than driver. The only hole I don’t like is 10, based on the tee shot.

 

I would rate it about the same as antelope hills or oak creek canyon, excepts the greens are slower. Nice to get out of the heat too. It was $50 on tee off for a noon time. Didn’t wait a single shot all day.

If you can get on Capital Canyon Club, its a fun course! Its private but if you call and sweet talk the pro shop they'll let you on. Some of the members are assholes but its still a fun beautiful course. Was married there so that's how we got on haha
