I was not anticipating this winter thaw, so I sold my irons a few weeks ago (back during the deep freeze) and have yet to order my new set. So, I had to borrow some irons from LD's backup bag. A Mizuno MP 60/MP 5 combo with S300s. I'm aging WAY too rapidly for these things. The ball flight with the irons was umm.... Let's just call it low, lol.

Very nice.   I picked up a custom built set of the 2021 version 5-PW about a year ago.   Took me a little bit to get used to but once dialed in they were excellent irons.

... I think Titleist really outdid themselves with the T Series irons. I played the P790's in Chicago but moving to Phoenix with hard and fast winter conditions I had a hard time holding greens because they didn't produce enough spin. Been playing Cobra irons ever since and currently using the King Tours that Rickie plays. Two weeks ago I ran across a brand new set of T200's still in plastic other than the 9 iron that looked like it had been hit once sitting in the used section of a GG for $899. I had gone in to order a T200 5 iron and was thinking of a combo T200 5-7 and King Tour 8-pw. Exact same set on the new rack for $1399. I bought them, resifted them with Steelfiber i95's and was surprised at how good the short irons performed. 

... The whole set is in my bag and I am no longer considering a combo set as I am pretty blown away with the T200's. They are like a combination of the best attributes of the P790 and King Tours combined in one iron. I imagine the T150 and T100's are equally stellar performers.

Did anyone play Weaver Ridge this past year? It has been a few years, used to make it there at least once a year, but the condition the last few seasons was horrible. Wondering if it has gotten any better since being sold.

Got an email today from Blackstone noting that they will be open next Tue/Wed for play.  I'm sure they'll have a nice off-season rate for everyone to enjoy February golf conditions. Assuredly they wouldn't charge the same rate as they would during peak summer months *inserts sarcasm*

Not many options in February.  Fox Lake is charging $60 and GCI was pretty close to that too.  

 

When the options are limited they can charge what they want.  GCI is typically packed so people are paying.

St. Andrews appears to have times anywhere from $24-35 today. You'll get what you pay for, but at this time of year anything is a bonus.

Dunno why I agreed to it but got invited to Meadowlark yesterday afternoon. Was better than expected. There was roll out on the fairways! Holes looked like they hadn't been moved in weeks. They were more like black holes with an event horizon around them. If you weren't within that, they'd spin out and return to space.

Palmira today. $20. The best words in the English language when paired together: walking only. The course was about what one would expect in February. Greens were slow and bumpy, fairways were okay but full of aeration turds. Bunkers were actually not awful, though I was only in one fairway trap. Ball striking was in mid season form with 9 fairways and 15 greens. A big goose egg on the birdie count though. Only one green was frozen (11). I hit a perfect approach and it skipped off. No super ball bounce though, so I got up and down. There are more open courses out South. Palmira, Deer Creek, GDN, and Sanctuary are all open and inexpensive.

Does dropping Golf Now mean they’ll bring back a walking rate? Redtail is a lot of things, but a difficult walk ain’t one of them.

No idea LD but we fight with the pro shop anytime we play there about walking.  They usually concede but I can't remember ever getting a price break.

Redtail used to offer a walking rate on weekdays only. Got rid of it about 4-5 years ago. They’ve really leaned into being a cart course, which is too bad.

Was trying to find a time for Sunday, unreal how expensive everywhere seems to be and how their tee sheets are all full until 1-2pm. Covid really ruined the game, between the covid golfers nonsense on the course  and the struggle to find good tee times, the game is starting to lose it's fun.

Yeah, I spent way too much time only to luck into an early round time at St. Andrew's.  Everything was booked solid.  Don't let it get you down, majority of courses are closed and this is atypical weather.

Play on Saturday. Sunday’s weather is gonna be too nice. I didn’t even bother looking for Sunday times. Had plenty of options for Saturday.

Yeah I try not to.  Last year was beyond frustrating dealing with all the idiots and having to really be diligent with getting those tee times.  I'm not exactly down about not playing Sunday anyway, our daughter was born 5 weeks ago so not playing means I get to spend that time with her.  It's the better option to be honest.

Saturday is too cold, to be honest, Sunday will even be iffy for me.  My back is pieced together like Tiger's, and my fitness level is the opposite of Tigers.  It's a bit of karma since I made fun of him for things he would always say about cool weather with his back.  Now I sadly understand everything (including the glutes not firing!).   I really need it to be 70+ to be comfortable, and once it gets to be 90+ I'm in heaven, since my body actually moves the way it should.

The tee sheet will be open 9am-3pm Monday, 8:30am-3pm Tuesday. Nine holes only after 2pm due to sunset times around 5:30pm.

Weekday shoulder season rates will be in effect, (18 holes riding $45, $35 Seniors age 60+; 9 holes riding $25).

Sanctuary today. The midseason form I had last week disappeared. I definitely was playing from the wrong tees, which didn’t help. Palmira and Sanctuary are about the same in terms of distance, but there’s a huge difference between playing in low 50’s temps with no wind and high 30’s temps with wind either directly into or behind for almost every hole. Still good to get out. I can think of worse uses of a Sunday morning.
