Sunday we went out to Prairie Bluff for a morning round.  Weather was looking iffy and there was some debate if we should just stick to the range and hit some balls or give it a go.  We gave it a go.  Course was saturated as expected from all the rain, but it was in fantastic shape despite that.  Greens were on the slower slide, but rolled great, and the bunkers held the water really well.  Pace was great on the front, we got through in an hour and 20.   On the back we hit a wall with pace, and looking at the sky the weather clearly was going to take a turn, but the three groups in front of us were just out there like nothing was going on.  The group in front of us would all sit in their carts and wait until until the group were well beyond range until they actually got out and started their pre shot nonsense.  The heavens opened up on us on hole 16, luckily all the slow pokes abandoned ship.  We were on foot so we just stuck it out and it was a wet wet finish.  If these dang covid golfers would have all worked with a bit of urgency, they easily could have finished, along with the two groups behind us prior to the weather.  Instead they found themselves inside arguing about rain checks, unreal.   I chirped to the pro I know behind the counter they deserve nothing  cause their slow play is what caused them to end up in the rain.  Anyway, 2 birdies, 2 bogies for a solid even par round.

Asking for a rain check after playing 16 holes, lol! My God.

It was the slow group who I think dropped after 17.  So even more amusing. They felt like they were owed at least 9 holes since they didn't finish.  Pro-rate that out it would have been less than $5, I can't believe anybody would think taking 10 minutes go get $5 is worth their time.      Back 9 pace was going to be pushing 2:30, that alone should disqualify anybody for a rain check when they would have easily made it if they were moving at a reasonable pace.   It's amazingly obvious how easy these covid golfers are to identify.   For the sanity of us, and course employees, I'm really hoping we're nearing the burst of that bubble.   Growing the game is fine, but these guys IMO are not growth, they are destroying it.

If you aren't going to abide by the pace rules they have in place - then I 100% agree with this!   What I don't understand is if there's rain on the radar, how you don't ask what the rain check policy is BEFORE you go play.  They did have it out there, but we know that people like this can't really read to begin with.

No course is going to give a rain check to a group after finishing 17 holes. Nor should they.

Also, unless forced off the course because of lightning, just finish the damn round. They had one to play and were in carts! Drop the whole PGA Tour routine, play ready golf and MAN the F up.

My sympathy to the PB shop jock. I would have laughed these clowns right out of the pro shop. Insanity!

The two pro's were in there, so at least it wasn't just a kid or older guy running the register when they came in.   They don't really put up with a ton, especially guys like this.

Also 100% agree on the lightning.  If they don't sound the siren for it - then you are leaving the course on your own doing, no rain check should be issued, and more if you go wait it out, you don't get your spot back on the course.

After a bunch of rounds at or under par, the tips at White Hawk brought me back down to Earth. I’m pretty decent, especially this time of year, but I’m not 76.3/149 good. The course is in solid shape and the greens are running very quick. They could use some rain as a few holes have some dollar spot but it looks like they did a good job of combating it. I played alright with 9 fairways, 12 greens and no doubles but considering I hit the first six greens yet had no birdies on the front, I left some strokes out there. I bogied 7 and 8 Black and 2, 4, 7, and 9 Silver with a birdie on 5 for a 77. That easily could have been an 80 or 81 but I had a lot of solid par saves.

Played Cantigny yesterday. Great service from top to bottom there. Course was in excellent condition even though the greens weren’t running that fast. Man, the practice putting green is huge! Has to be over an acre. My only complaint was the driving range grass was too long - probably over an inch. The new renovation on Woodside is nice. I think they gave you some more space to hit your drive on the 2nd hole. On the par 5 7th at Hillside I hit one of the longest drives of my life at 360 yards. I had a wedge into the green, but 3 putted for par of course. The new turf on Hillside is still growing in. It’s a little firm compared to Woodside, but still nice shape. What stood out to me was how few balls marks there were. Players actually repair them at Cantigny!

Made the trek to Byron yesterday to play Prairie View. For $50, you can't go wrong. Pace was a tale of 2 nines. Played the front in an hour forty which was sweet, and then on the back, there were 4 times we had 3 groups on the tee box and the culprits were a threesome.  Yikes. A threesome.

Conditions were also a bit spotty. Some of the fairways, like 2 were in bad shape, and it didn't look like they were doing anything to address that. Same with the greens.  Some fast, some slow, some in need of work, like 17. Over the years of going to PV, it seems their focus on conditioning has lessened and now it's average at best.

The biggest surprise yesterday was the weather. On the drive out on 88, it was sunny and pouring like a banshee for about 20 minutes. Same on 39 north of Rochelle. But at PV, the forecasted heat index of 112 was off significantly, and it was a really nice, albeit, windy day. No doubt the winds helped to keep things comfortable.

For the last 3-4 rounds, putting has been substandard. Normally inside 5 feet, it's been a 95% conversion rate this year which has obviously helped with scoring. Not so recently, so on the back nine yesterday, decided to adjust my stance to the Nicklaus approach being more open and that worked out well with 6 one putts on the inward side.  We'll see if that holds up or was an anomaly.

Two day, 2 man tournament Friday/Sunday at Silver Lake. Weather looks bad tomorrow in the morning, thankful for an early afternoon tee time.

Yeah, the days of PV being in excellent shape look to be over. It was in average shape when I played it last summer and over Memorial Day weekend this year. Beat up in a bunch of spots and the greens were not good. Too bad.

PV is still a good layout and value, but you now have to question whether it's worth the effort to make the drive. 5 years ago, it was an easy call.

a little off topic.

I worked as a Walking Scorer for the Evans Scholars Tournament at the Glen Club today.

We were the 8th group out & the round took over five hours.

The longest wait was on the 589 yd Par 5, 18th hole. Needed ten minutes until the previous group was on or just in front of the green for our group to shoot. .

Each player in our group reached green or very close to it in Two.

It was a tad warm out.

In six hours, I drank 12 bottles of water & 6 or 8 Gatorades.

Get to do it again tomorrow. I must be nuts.....

Heard admission is free for the GenPop.

Played Chevy Chase today, decided to walk. Tough walking in the humidity! Conditions were better than usual there, greens pretty slow but otherwise in great shape. $57 on a Friday feels like a steal anywhere at this point. On the other hand, pace was brutal. Front 9 in 2:10, back 9 in 2:25. Felt like we were waiting on every shot. Just slow players in general.

Brighton Dale Links Blue today with Bear.  We had a 6:37 tee time but they moved us to 6:45. Supposedly BDale only wants foursomes on weekends, yet they let a twosome go off two groups ahead of us. So they’ll let twosomes go if they play in a cart. Because carts play faster. As always, death to all carts. The upside to getting bumped back was we got some big unintentional comedy from the group in front of us. Generally, it’s an idiom regarding someone’s intellect when the phrase, “I’ll bet you think strippers like you” is uttered. One guy, however, was boldly proclaiming that the “the stripper last night was super into me.” Sure, bud. Another guy was battling the rare two way shank. But carts play faster.

The course was pretty saturated and the bunkers were basically mud. The fact that I was 2/3 on sand saves was a minor miracle. The greens were pretty good though. Not super fast but smooth. The only standing water was in a couple of bunkers. I didn’t play great on the front but managed a 39 with three bogies. On the back I finally birdied 18 to shoot 75.

Back out to Arrowhead yesterday, and there's a lot to take in.   As I predicted, they pushed it to much in early on and now it's showing some pretty good wear.  A few of the greens have dead patches and will probably need to be sodded.  Others have disease or signs of stress.    With all the moisture and lack of mowing they were probably running at a cool 9.   It was a bit odd to see downhill putts hit firm still come up short.  Very different course now than it was two months back.  With the weather we've been having, it is what it is.

Pace of play was another story.  We started on the west 9 and the group in front of us fell behind pretty quick.  We come off of 9 and the group is still getting drinks, food etc.   We tried to jump but the starter said no.  He then tells us they're fine, they played in 2:15.... we have some back and forth about how they're not keeping up,  but the starter made it clear that doesn't matter.   By the time we were able to tee off,  the 4 ball behind us,  and the group behind them were all on waiting.   Starter was getting it from them as well, glad they all spoke up.  Back 9 was another 2:15, but add in 15 minutes for the stop at that turn and 4:45 is what you got.   If you're going to say 2:15 is okay,  at least make it so you need be on hole 10 teeing off within 2:15.  Most of the back we had 3 groups on every hole.   Why is a golf course allowing one group to ruin things for the rest?

Lots of rangers out, what's the point?  They're just being paid to drive around and wave,   take em off the payroll and lower the greens fees.

1 birdie,  2 bogies,  73.  After yesterday's experience, we probably will pop this one out of the rotation for the rest of the year.    I'm sure they'll miss us.

Arrowhead in June had some of the fastest and firmest fairways and greens I have ever seen. Maybe they had a big tournament there, but it just didn’t seem necessary. Sounds like they are paying the price now.

They had the greens running at almost 13 at that time.   No public course that gets as much play as Arrow does should be running that fast for weeks on end.  Most private courses don't even do that,  and when they do it's for days at a time, not weeks.    They got a new super this year, have a feeling some of this is rookie error with trying to see what his new toy can do.

Two day, net best ball tournament at Silver Lake on Friday/Sunday. The teams that teed off between 7-11 Friday morning pulled the best of the draw as they had perfect weather. Our group was just after 1PM and we caught 2 delays, and rain though 7 holes. Stuck with playing mudballs, wet bunkers and the rain gear was on/off at least 5x. Ugly round and we were 9 back as a team going into this morning

Guessing in my 55 years of playing golf that this morning was the worst humidity day, ever. The temp wasn't outrageous but the humidity was 92% and coupled with the overnight rain, things were just moist. Post surgery, I'm wearing glasses and trying to keep them without fog was just a lost cause. Resin wasn't working to keep the grips dry so I switched to the rain gloves which was the best answer.

So before I get into the comp, need to share about playing with a super nice, 89 year old person, let's just call him George. First, I hope we're all of good enough health to be playing at 89, however, I don't think the rules of golf or etiquette change based on age.  George shot 89, God bless him. He had a stretch of 6 holes on the back and he pared 5 of the six. Outstanding! George was oblivious of what was going on around him though. He didn't start looking at his putt until it was his turn, and the same on the tee box. His PSR on the tee box was around 90 seconds. I lit a candle at church for his cartner. George also insisted on driving the cart, and when he hit me on the way to the 18th green and knocked me to the ground, his response was "you were in my way." Thankfully I'll never ride in a cart or car with George. The rules for this tournament were also very specific regarding advice and when George tried to graciously read a putt, I had to tell him that he couldn't give advice, requested or volunteered.  George's response to me wouldn't be allowed by this site, and let's leave my Mother out of this conversation.

It appears based on the current results that we finished 1 shot out of the money. Kicking myself in the arse having missed two birdie putts inside 5 feet, shame on me. On the 157 yard 13th, hit an 8i that didn't leave the flag. In fact, it was so on point, that it one hopped and hit the flag, and dropped on the lip, but not in the cup. DAMN. Here's what made it worse. The people who run the Silver Lake Men's Club forgot to put the CTP on that hole, so guess who hit it to 1 inch and didn't win? Um...his name rhymes with DaveSmellsMore.

Have to share what I think is just shi*** behavior. So as mentioned, this was a 2 day tournament weekend. You pick your partner and it was net best ball. So if you sucked for a hole or two, fine, tighten up your jock strap, get your head out of your arse and play on, right? You're also paying an additional entry fee to be in this event, so man up. Someone who I've played with multiple times, and is a 7, has been playing ugly golf recently as we all can be prone to do, and on Friday, on the 5th tee already at 7 over, he just walked off the course. He quit on his partner, who sadly at that point, was net -7 and playing his best round of the year. DQ'd. No refund. And from what was shared, no apology.

Lots of golf coming up this week. Bowes Tuesday. Blackstone Wednesday. Normal SL tournament Friday, The Hills of Bartlett Saturday and then Sunday is a 27 hole event on the North Course at SL coupled with the par 3 course. Think that's a 4 man event.

Not that I want to make assumptions based on looks, but I'd be willing to risk my life savings these 4 were not friends with any of the rangers.    Arrowhead is another place, like Prairie Landing, where the staff leaves a lot to be desired.   Pro shop gave us a lashing earlier this year for showing up to early to a 6:20 tee time cause he wasn't ready to go.   Feel like the starter is always yelling into his radio on 1 when teeing it up.  Had some ranger messing with the dang water jugs making a ton of noise while we were hitting...  which doesn't bother us but I could see others really getting annoyed with it.

Gotta get on the groups who are…….early? Fluffing absurd. Are there good area courses with equally decent employees? Landing, HOE, Arrowhead, Blackstone, Foxford. Just…oof. People said Cantigny has good staff at least.

I like the guys at Prairie Bluff.  They don't put up with nonsense.

Former player in our comp group in town from AZ, played Bowes today. It was rather soupy to say the least. Guessing I've played 20ish rounds at Bowes, and it's in the worst condition I've seen. A few tee boxes are dead, and closed. Greens are pock marked, dying grass, although bunkers do have sand.  BTW, did they add a bunker left of the fairway on 1? The bunkers on that hole had a different colored sand compared to the remainder of the course and it was staked. On a positive note, PoP was wonderful. Didn't wait on a shot and finished in just under 4. Tale of 2 nines. Started on 10, and started like a 36 handicapper. That lasted a few holes and then the caffeine kicked in and it was fairways and greens.

Blackstone tomorrow.

No s***. Joliet Jake  is always on our tail as we mostly walk when there. Also had issues at Seven Bridges with Woodridge Willie  telling us on the 18th tee that the group in front of us finished 20 minutes ago. "Well it's gonna be tough to catch up to them now don'tcha reckon?"
