You probably miss Country Lakes because of the "special events" held there!

One of the guys on my HS teams Dad was the head pro there, having known them, nothing that went on there was a surprise.

Bear and I played a course that isn’t going anywhere: Whisper Creek. No word on whether there’s a secret loofah code at Del Webb’s Sun City but the course was in pretty mediocre shape. The fairway bunkers have, impossibly, gotten worse, and some are now classified as Ground Under Repair. I don’t think the greens have been touched in a while but the tee boxes and fairways were fine and the greenside bunkers had been groomed. Ugly front from me, with four bogies (2, 4, 7 and 9) and no birdies but I birdied 10, hit 8/9 greens on the back, and shot -1 for a 75.

You’re confusing the Post with the Times. Post readers do the crossword in crayon while drinking Monster.

Recently moved to downtown Chicago and have been playing Cog Hill the past few weeks.  It seems to be the only course on the list of suggested courses that I've found throughout this topic that has a semblance of "fall rates" for the mornings.  Looking around at some others, I haven't noticed any differences.  Any suggestions on other places to try?  I'm mainly looking to play in the mornings since its easier to navigate weekend traffic earlier and I'm from Ohio so the cold isn't anything new to me.

What I've found in the past for spring and fall rates is most courses generally don't publicize the lower rate, they just charge less at the course. No idea why. But some courses will simply charge full rate until they close up. Get on email lists for when discounted rates are made available. Check online booking engines as they might reflect some sort of discount.

Looks like Village Links of Glen Ellyn has 25% off their posted rate at the moment. Generally I think Highlands of Elgin has fall rates, but coming from downtown that's a bit too far. One course to keep an eye on come spring for downtown might be Canal Shores, near Northwestern. For full on golf it's not ideal as a short and tight neighborhood course, but it's a very unique layout with a pretty relaxed vibe, maybe more for the social golf scene than a serious one. I think it's under construction right now but should be ready next year.

I feel like fall and spring rates are becoming less and less an option. It used to be the NFL and college football started and tee times were a bit easier to come by. Now, if it is halfway decent, they are packing tee sheets still. I believe Ruffled Feathers by Cog offered a decent fall rate. But I moved away a couple of years ago, so I may be wrong.

Very tempted to dig up chisag’s take on Mitch Trubisky from the last “Where Are You Playing?” thread.

... 🤣 dig it up. And as a hopeless Bears homer after only one preseason game when I saw some potential at least (which lasted about 1/4 of his first season) I was never a Trubisky fan. I could read defenses better in high school than Mitch can in the NFL. But I disliked Fields from the get go. The only QB I can remember loving since '85 was Cutler and I know how fans and the media feel about him. But you can save this post for future ridicule: Maye will be in the Pro Bowl by his second season. I just hope it's with the Bears.

I'll provide the receipts. "Something special" "best qb the bears have had....well ever" "He has done all that so I have seen everything I need to see to proclaim him a franchise QB."  😂 (Just giving you a hard time, as I was one of the people you were responding to).

... Homer. 🙈🙉🙊 Oh Boy was I wearing some rose colored glasses. 🤣  I was so starved for a QB and Mitch physically had it all with the exception of being able to actually read a defense and react accordingly. Most scouts had him rated above Mahomes and Watson.  In my defense he did make the Pro Bowl but then got worse every year he played, holding the ball longer and not getting through his progressions, the absolute core values of a successful NFL QB.
Scouting Report:

Strengths:

  • Accurate passer
  • Fits passes into tight windows
  • Good ball placement
  • Throws a catchable ball
  • Quality arm strength
  • Consistent mechanics
  • Moves eyes through progressions
  • Pushed team to wins
  • Good internal clock
  • Mobility
  • Displays some feel in the pocket
  • Difficult to sack
  • Can hurt defenses on the ground
  • Can make all the throws required
  • Can pick up yards on the ground
  • Upside

    Weaknesses:
  • Lack of starting experience
  • Inconsistent decision-making
  • Inconsistent field vision
  • Lacks experience working under center
  • Can get rattled by the rush
  • Will need to improve footwork

Nah, you're spot on. Fall and spring rates are pretty much gone at most places. Or, spring rates go until April 15 (LOL!!). If that's the case, let's cut the bs and just go with one standard rate.

What I'm seeing this fall is full tee sheets, but not full courses. Especially true on colder days. It sucks. Guys eating up tee times and no-showing.

Yeah, it’s the permanent tee time crowd that’s no showing. Those should end on 10/1 at the latest. There are some courses offering actual Fall rates on weekends though. This year I’ve gotten the following on Fall rates:
Ruffled Feathers $44

Pine Meadow $55

Redtail $44

Whisper Creek $46

Also, I know White Hawk is $64 and Shepherds Crook is $49.

What travel bags is everyone using to drag your bags through ORD and MDW? Soft shell, hard shell, hybrid with the hard top? Looking to get one for an upcoming trip to Florida, not trying to break the bank

Soft shell. But I am always traveling with my wife, so multiple golf bags and suitcases. Hard cases are just too big and bulky we'd never get that all to fit. Hard cases just always seems to get in the way, in the car, in the hotel etc.

I do softcover, a stiff arm on the inside is a must. I'll throw a couple of towels in there and add shoes to the sides. I have had great luck with my clubglove.

My issue with shipsticks is not having clubs for a week + before a golf trip. I am always 1 range session away from figuring out golf, so I need those before a trip 😂.

Anyone ever play at Lake Barrington Shores (semi-private)?

Looks like they have a promo for next season's memberships. $2,600 unlimited or $200 in order to have access to the club and pay green fees each time.

Used to date a female golf pro who lived there and we played the course regularly.  It's not terribly long, somewhat tight, Geez that sounds like me. Anywho, water comes in to play on 4-5 holes.  Houses come into play on most holes as they generally are the boundaries on holes.  Not remembering any holes as being special. The range was tiny and I'm not sure if you could even hit driver on it. It's a solid C+ facility but not one I'd want to play regularly. The only reason I played it regularly then was because of the convenience.
