Metamora Fields and Weaver Ridge are open tomorrow. $40. I wouldn’t trust anything in the immediate Chicago area though. Too cold last week. Next weekend courses should be good to go though.

I learned today that Las Vegas National GC is the old Desert Inn course. their rep at the golf show and I shared some memories of yesteryear.

he about flipped when I let him know my DI bag tag , course guide and keychain were still in plastic from a round there, circa late 80's. (Gawd , I'm old)

grabbed a Titleist fairway, this time an F2, with Diamana shaft like my F3 has for $115. NOS, from Nevada Bobs, 'cause I'm a ho.

the BMW-Evans Scholars Invitational booth had an awesome deal on shirts and sweaters. can't wrong on a Peter Millar merino v-neck for $20

my buddy got a TM SIM driver with the Hazrdus Smoke 6.5 shaft, nice looking piece.

other fellow found a nice deal on a pair of FJ's, two for $70.

renewed my CDGA membership, accepted the black bandanna from Tito's Vodka to use for an neckerchief and avoided the home remodeling guy.

Oh, there's a booth from Glen Rose Texas, about an hour from Dallas. brochure calls it the Dinosaur capital of Texas. they have some touristy things there besides a couple of courses.

nice people. stop by and get one of their pens. has a neat eyeglass cleaner on the top . looks like a Kokopelli.

my wife appreciated that item.

Visited Cog’s driving range for the first time since they installed the Toptracer.... Like it! I might actually start practicing, again... Need to work on that launch angle ?.

Anyone have any info on the new ownership at Flossmoor? I had inquired with them this time last year about a Junior/Associate membership and wondering if there's any new offerings with the change in management. Supposedly they will be known as "Flossmoor Golf Club" but other than a couple news articles about it, there's no other info anywhere

we took a permanent time at Sunset Valley this season. we opted for the first round on Saturdays.

their practice area is offsite, so warm-ups will have to be on Friday evenings.

maybe we'll see some of you fellows there.

we heard their restaurant is pretty good, and there are some good places in the area for breakfast to add variety.

Golf show and good weather has me ready for the season. Looks like a little Seven Bridges action, and full blown midwest golf trip planning are on the horizon. Locales being discussed:

 

-Central Wisconsin for Lawsonia/Wild Rock/Trappers Turn

-Southwest Michigan to check out Pilgrim's Run/Diamond Springs/The Ravines/Stoatin Brae

-Central Michigan trip to Eagle Eye/Hawk Hollow/Angel's Crossing/Stoatin

-Indianapolis to play the Fort/Purgatory/Brickyard Crossing/Bear Slide?

 

Golfing season is the best season

I'd go Central Wisconsin or Indy. I am biased though because I spend a lot of time in Indy and like it there. I'd look into play the Purdue course on the way to or back.

I'm biased towards Michigan golf, and I LOVE Pilgrim's Run. That said it's really not southwest Michigan being 40 minutes north of GR. Of the others listed I've only played Diamond Springs. Really unique course, I like the layout but it's unique in that it doesn't really have a fairway, more a single cut kind of like the apron between fairway and rough. Some great holes though.

I also have a Michigan bias. Pilgrim’s Run is one of my favorite courses and once I got used to the one cut fairways at Diamond Springs, I really liked it. Another option up there that’s really close to Pilgrim’s and is a great value is Cedar Chase. Kind of a hidden gem in MI. Angel’s is a phenomenal layout but the greens are insane. Tricked out is putting it mildly. I haven’t played Ravines but Argonne did and he said it was his favorite of the courses in the area. Personally, I’d sub out Stoatin Brae for Hawkshead.

I would expect Cinder Ridge to be open. I-55 exit 240. It's a good, fun course, not a top 10 but good golf. Not too close to Evanston though.

One bump on my own post. Will pull the trigger on this within the next week. Course will be open tomorrow and Sunday...probably pretty much for good going forward since high temps will be 40+ most days...might as well capitalize on the membership by getting in some rounds in March

Glencoe and Sunset Valley are open. Those are probably the two closest to Evanston that are open.

Broken Arrow this morning. There was a slight frost delay but they didn’t even start tee times until 9:00 so we only ended up 30 minutes behind when we would’ve begun. The course was in okay shape considering nothing had been touched since last season. A handful of bunkers were playable and the greens were decent. I didn’t have any birdies but I had a lot of very good looks. Burnt edges all day.

Was first to tee off at sunset valley today. Course in good shape. Greens mostly slow and sandy, but to be expected this time of year. Wind was the real challenge especially at this course after the re-design. Will play there tomorrow again. A little warmer, but still gusty.

we played SV today. greens were amazingly conditioned for so early in the season.

wind was easily a two club adjustment. sunny and beautiful day.

Quite the weekend of golf. Opened up at The Highlands on Saturday. For this early in the year, the course was in amazing conditions and the greens were rolling nicely. Only 1-2 places where the ground was soft/wet. They're fixing the drainage issue on #2 which should make that hole much more playable. The wind was present but not really enough to impact shots that much.

In contrast, we played Blackstone yesterday around Noon. Possibly the toughest conditions I've played in for years. There was still snow in some places, the bunkers were extremely rough and the wind was a constant 25-30. Some of the pins were in unusual positions and I'm sure it was to minimize the foot traffic. It did lead to some unique and creative hole locations though. The par 3 5th was playing directly into the wind and the pin was as far back left as it could be and was lasered at 227. Not embarrassed to share that I hit driver and did get it to the middle of the green but still 15 yards away. That was one MF of a wind.

Our competitive season starts a week from Saturday and very much looking forward to it!
