What 8 to 10 Clubs Are You Carrying?

I played Streamsong Blue on vacation a month ago and it got me thinking. We used a caddy the first time but when I go back I’ll probably just carry myself. My carry bag is a Titleist Players 4 and really only reasonably carries 10 clubs. So if I went back and carried myself what 8 to 10 clubs would I bring/leave out? Obviously it’s going to change depending on the course and conditions. So what course/conditions and what are you carrying?

Me:

Streamsong Blue/Hot and dry:

Driver and Putter: obvious ones.

3 Hybrid: My fairway finder and get out of trouble club when I top a drive or something.

4 iron: my bump and run club.

6-PW,SW

Leaving out 3w, 5i, GW and LW.

I usually hit my driver better than my 3w and there’s no real areas where a 3w would be necessary off the tee. Can use PW anywhere I would need the GW. Only place for a LW would be out of the sand and can go with the SW in its place plus the LW doesn’t really get along with very tight lies.

I like your setup bud. Sounds about what I would carry in my bag if I had to limit it to 10.

3W (don't hit my 3H all that well)

4i, 6-PW

60 LW (play better out of the sand with it than my 56 SW, and most versatile with chip shots)

Putter

I'd probably miss my SW the most. I use it well on par 3's depending on the course and yardage.

I would feel bad leaving out my LW though. My wedge play is probably the strength of my game.

Cobra or Sterling SL irons, Wishon SW, Anser 3 putter. I'll either carry an SL 4-iron or R15 driver, but not both.

Id go go driver, 5-AW, 54 degree wedge and putter. To be fair though, my 5-iron has the loft of a 3-iron, so its a 200ish yard club.

I recently trimmed my bag down to 7 clubs and am very happy with it. IMO, you dont need any more than that. 14 clubs is just an arbitrary number that the R&A came up with anyways.

I'm convinced that with those 9 clubs, my scores wouldn't be any different. I rarely hit my 3W, 4i, or 5i as it is, and I might miss the 6i and GW, but I could definitely make due.

I'd just leave out every other iron which makes gapping much easier. 9 clubs, no big gaps anywhere.

 

My bag would look like: D, 4w, 3u, 5i, 7i, 9i, GW, LW, P.

My regular bag set up: Driver, 5w, 3h, 4,6,8 irons, 48° PW, 53° & 60° wedges, putter. I always carry.

I've experimented with taking even/odd numbered irons and I don't like it. I seem to invariably end up having to create too many shots which results in missed greens. That initiates bogey golf at which point I just end up wishing I had brought everything.

 

I'd recommend sticking with 6-Pw, Sw as opposed to something like 3-5-7-9-Gw, Lw.

 

Just accept that you won't have the longest iron(s) and get on with it.

Driver-3wood-5-pw- 51-54-putter. that’s 11 but all i normally carry even when i am forced into a cart. the weight difference is noticeable after 9 holes carrying. especially if you keep the water jug only half full and only a few balls, if the s*** hits the fan we all know balls can be found easily in a pinch especially near any form of water!

I'll actually do this regularly for a second round of the day on trips to Bandon Dunes, light carry bag and half set. Typically I go Driver, 3 hybrid, 5i, 7i, 9i, GW, LW, putter.

When ever i walk, i only take out half my clubs. Either odd number or even number clubs. Score exactly the same as if i had 14 clubs.

I've been carrying and playing 7-9 clubs for a number of years. Typically, I adjust which clubs I carry to make sure I am clubbed properly for the par 3 holes. I have found I tend to have problems when I try to hit harder or choke down and hit softer on the par 3's. Embrace the challenge and enjoy the golf!

I can't stand my players 4 because it's too big compared to my old bag but it's small enough that it's embarrassing to put on the push cart :D .

Do you have a jumbo putter grip or something?

 

I'd play Driver 6-9 50,55,60 and putter for a 10 club.

3 Hybrid 5, 7-9, 50, 60 and putter for a 8 club.

Totally and completely dependent on course / conditions, as you mentioned. I would look closely at every hole and determine where I thought a driver was absolutely necessary. If there were 5 holes I thought driver would give me a significant advantage then I'd bag it, otherwise nope. On most courses I can use a 2i or shorter off the tee and still reach on every hole. Especially in windy conditions, 2i is so much more valuable.
