Scottsdale/Phoenix in mid/late November

Hi guys - just looking to get a little input on our upcoming golf trip in mid to late November (16th-24th). We are a group of 8 from as far east you can go in North America (Newfoundland), so we are looking to see some of the more scenic courses. We visited last year and really enjoyed Quintero and Las Sendas, so they are repeats… but looking to get input on the others that have been presented to us:

 

11-17-2019: Longbow

11-18-2019: Southern Dunes

11-19-2019: Quintero

11-20-2019: Verde River

11-21-2019: Gold Canyon Dinosaur

11-22-2019: Verrado

11-23-2019: Las Sendas

 

We do have to be a little budget conscientious, so I think the courses like TPC and Troon North would push us above our limit!

 

Any input would be appreciated!!

You've got an excellent selection and won't be disappointed with any of those. There is a lot of driving on that list - the Southern Dunes/Quintero/Gold Caynon triangle covers a pretty massive area. Quintero and Gold Caynon are 90 miles apart (145 km for those of you that fancy that).

 

You're also showing up right after overseed. Depending on how long it has been since overseed, some courses will still be cart path only and may not have been mowed. Check this list out:

I recommend arranging your days based on the furthest date since the close date where possible.

 

Those two minor issues aside, that's a helluva trip you have setup. At Verrado, I prefer the Victory course over Founders. The finishing hole is stunning and you'll get an amazing view when you pull up and leave. And drop a few sticks of dynamite around Quintero for me. :)

Scenery more important course design I take it? I'd definitely replace any of those with We Ko Saguaro and likely stay on that side of town and do Eagle Mountain over Longbow. Dinosaur is a joke of a golf course but it has stunning views. Las Sendas is fine and all but not in the top 40-50 courses around here. Verde River used to be much better but the redesign compromised it a bit. Still, of courses on your list I'd rank them SD-Verrado (assume Founders but Victory would still be second here)-Verde River-Longbow-Quintero-Las Sendas-Dinosaur if I were only considering the quality of the layout.

 

You're not missing anything with the TPC unless you just want to play a course on TV. It is just a mediocre course with a big name.

 

Other feedback is that you're doing a lot of driving. You've got all 4 corners of the Valley covered. Feels like a lot of wasted time and it really doesn't matter what part of the Valley you're staying in because there will be a lot of long drives regardless of where that might be.

Have not played Wickenburg Ranch but heard very good things from people that have and they have a short course as well. Eagle mountain is a fun desert course with great views. November should be great weather and conditions but pricey for sure. TPC is a little over priced but a very cool experience.

you're clearly willing to drive so I'd consider Golf Club of Estrella, probably in lieu of Longbow...there isn't really much scenery at Longbow, just the planes flying in and out.

Let's just say that Longbow is a bit polarizing, lots of folks think it is really good (like me) and many that just don't find it appealing. It's a varied layout with a lots of options around the greens. The airplanes can be fun, often WWI biplanes and other interesting ones, but for some it detracts. I would rate your list:

1 Southern Dunes

2 Longbow

3 Verde River

4 Verrrado (Founders much better than Victory)

5 Quintero

6 Gold Canyon

7 Las Sendas

I can live with Longbow being 2 (think it is just a little too easy in normal conditions to be there but, eh, no problem) but Dinosaur has to be dead last! :)

Its funny how certain rounds can skew our like/dislike for a course. I really enjoy longbow, but it all stems from a random golf day where the fairways were firm and brown and the greens running near 13 in prep for some college tournament (i think). It was just a really fun day of golf. The course played so differently than they normally keep it.
