It would be hard to bring myself to play those but I’d have to think of it as just a new set of irons that have been waiting for me to discover. **As beautiful as they are without swinging them and feeling a pure strike you are really only getting to enjoy half of their beauty.**

That's a good way of putting it.

Yeah, I’d think so. Maybe even late 80’s.

I keep looking at the pictures and drooling though. If I had those in front of me, unless I planned on selling them I’d be hitting those things. Stunning shape to them.

I always thought the first two numbers of the model correspnded with the year of introduction: DG8401 would be David Graham 1984. There is also a DG8402, DG8201, DG8601 an dthe DG201.

Apparently David Graham was a real club tinkerer and had a great feel and knowledge about club design. He was said to help fellow pro's by adjusting their lofts and lies in hotel door jams when they came to him for advice.

I have a set of Daiwa Advisor DG273 irons 1-SW .(I did some research on them when I bought them). Ian Baker-Finch used a set of DG273 irons to win the 1991 British Open. The irons are so-named because they were designed by fellow Aussie David Graham and 273 was the score David shot to win the 1981 US Open.

The irons were some of the first to be investment cast, not forged. Apparently they made a forged set and a cast set and tested them with a bunch of pro's. When the pro's couldn't tell the difference (so they say) Daiwa went ahead and produced the "cheaper to manufacture" cast version.

The early DG273's had the inscription "Designed by David Graham" on the back. My set didn't. I work at an airport and bumped into David Graham one day. I asked him why some sets don't have the inscription on the back. His reply in a hybrid Aussie /USA drawl " Cause they stopped paying me."

Olde Tom,

Are you saying these are cast?

The Daiwa catalogs I have say the DG273s are forged.

Investment cast irons first appeared in the 1960s, so something from 1991 wouldn't be among "some of the first to be investment cast."

Got the rest of that article? I want to find out why O'Malley lost a sponsor after winning the Scottish Open!

Well now I'm confused. My 1990 and 1991 catalogs say they were forged, but the ad above clearly says they were cast of carbon steel. Perhaps they changed methods in the middle of the run. I don't have a 1992 catalog and by 1993 they were gone.

They still weren't the first iron set cast in carbon steel. Ralph Maltby was doing that in the early 1980s, and I don't know that they were the first to do it. I remember Browning 440 ads from the 70s saying they could have cast their irons in carbon steel if there were any advantage to do it, and they believed there wasn't one.
