Nippon Modus Tour 105 in stiff compared to Recoil 95 F3

Want to try the Modus Tour 105 as it was a shaft that was recommended with the Mizuno shaft optimizer. It recommended the 105 in stiff as well as the Steelfiber in regular and the KBS Tour in regular.

I'm fairly happy with the Recoil 95 F3 shafts I have but I wasn't necessarily "fitted" for them. Considering re-shafting back to steel to get weight closer (my longer irons are shafted with Recoil 80).

I guess my question is- is this a big jump? Recoil 95 F3 (and Recoil 80 F3 in longer irons) vs the Modus 105 in stiff. I'm likely to at least soft step them once but just curios opinions here. Unfortunately my town doesn't have a great place to go get fit thoroughly and properly.

For starters...

Without computer analysis, the two shafts (Modus and Recoil F3) appear to have similar launch characteristics (mid-launch and mid-spin). The Modus.T 105 would weigh more (106 grams vs. 90-96 grams for the Recoil F3).

Did you get the M.Shaft Optimizer read out to help you solve some problem, or did you get the readout at a demo day and wonder if you couldn't maybe play better with a new shaft?

Now, what performance benefit do you seek from the reshaft? Were you having control problems because of the lighter Recoil shafts? You have a distinctive splitout in your CF16 irons. If you want closer to weight, you might reshaft your longer irons in Recoil 95.F3 and softstep them. And which "longer irons" have the Recoil 80 shafts?

Interesting discussion, I could understand better with more details. If this really bothers you, make a day trip to a larger town where a fitter could let you do a "side-by-side." Otherwise, trying to make a good set great - **on a hunch** - could do more harm than good. As I said to another WRXer today, _the perfect is the enemy of the very good_ (er, CF16 with Recoils).

You don't need to get another shaft to test if you might benefit from a bit more shaft weight. Just get some lead tape and go to the range. Wrap 10 gm around one of your clubs - about 3" below the grip. Then hit some balls to see how that feels or if anything improves with the results compared to a club w/o the added lead tape. And you don't have to stop at 10 gm, try various amounts (5 or 10 gm increments) to dial in the best shaft weight.

But if you do find it's better to go up in weight, you'll likely want to make similar tests with the longer clubs that currently have the 80 gm shafts.

Yeah I know I sort of like and prefer the feel of a little added weight just from demos and hitting some new stuff. Not a huge sample but it definitely seemed to tighten dispersion slightly although I hit the ball pretty straight. It’s more a tempo thing as it helps me stay in better tempo whereas I feel like I’m getting quick with the light stuff in transition with the longer 5-7.

I’m ok with the 95 gram weight and feel in my MBs (8-PW) but could easily go a bit heavier. My Apex Pros (6 &7) feel too light as does my 5i (a CF16 shafted with yet another Recoil 760).

This got out of whack when I ordered my MBs and wanted them heavier coming from a light experiment and now I have different shaft weights throughout the set.

I play ok (1.5 index) but I would never say iron striking is a strength

I made the switch from Recoil TSPX 95F4 to Modus105 S-Flex - they behave rather similarly with the heaver one helping me with quality of strike. Since all Nippon shafts feel really smooth, you don't have to worry about them feeling overly stiff. If you like the extra weight, I guess you should be fine making the switch. FWIW - my swing speed with a #7 hovers around 85mph once I'm warmed up. It can creep up to 88, but that's not the average. And I tend to get quick in transition, so the added mass helps me staying in sync a bit better.
