So what's the deal with Proposition 65 on equipment?

Ignorant non American here...

Purchased a Titleist towel, brought it home and see a sticker saying **California Proposition 65 Warning - WARNING: This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth detects or other repoductive harm.**

mfixf5ejdphl.jpg

What the... it's a towel! I've Googled the topic and seems many other manufacturers list a bunch of products with this warning from bags to head covers. But is this something to be legitimately concerned about? Sounds ridiculous but would you wash it separately from other items etc? Or should I gift it to someone annoying during a round?

It's well known that too much Dihydrogen Monoxide intake has been responsible for the deaths of millions of human beings. Why would you not want to put a label on such a dangerous product... :)

California should just ban it outright.

Note that it says "known to the State of California", not "known to the United States".

This is NOT political commentary: I was born and grew up in California and made the conscious decision as an adult to leave it. Too many of the people who live there are absolutely bonkers. Spend any time reading news from the United States and you'll see a LOT of stories come up about crazy things that happen there and it won't take too long to convince you of what I've written here.

Serious answer here:

Prop 65 was designed to increase consumer awareness. If any product is to be sold in the State of California, it must bear that label. "Known To Cause" is a little unclear, as it should mostly say "Is linked to (cancer)," which is quite literally everything. As it pertains to a golf towel, who knows? Could be the metals in the grommet or hook, could be the bleach or dyes in the fabric, could be the synthetic fibers in the fabric itself, could be the packaging. The real killer is stress. Don't let it stress you, and you'll be fine.

Over regulated in what way? I appreciate the knowledge of what I'm buying and the materials that went into the manufacture, exactly like I appreciate the ingredients listed on my food. Providing information gives the consumer the ability of making wise choices. If asbestos is being used in my sweater, I want to know.

Well, I can give a slight example to this. I work in Long Beach, which has its own sets of regulations outside of your standard state and federal regulations. I ordered a 316SS sink for industrial service. Nothing fancy, just 316SS utility sink. I was emailed and called from the manufacturer that they could not ship to us due to the Prop 65 warning. Which is ironic, considering we batch process ethylene oxide and epichlorohydrin. Another case in regards to this was paint. I needed to order paint, same scenario. Vendor called me to tell me he couldn't deliver an oil based paint due to the prop warning and county regulations. I was referred to another product. 4 gallons of alternative regulation free paint that I could purchase costs $700.

Prop 65 is BS IMO. Although I can see the regulations on the paint, I wasn't happy with the vendor capitalizing on the regulation. Pretty much every product I Purchase for my company has a prop 65. Essentially, alarming everyone that every consumer product will cause you cancer and it negates litigation.

Pretty much every way. A lot of the regulations are simple money grabs though but I digress...

I did not find the label posted especially helpful. Given the information shared in post #1, what should the OP do?

Prop 65 warnings are intended to inform the public to the potential for cancer-causing chemicals to appear in consumer products. Unfortunately in practice, no one really knows what causes cancer, so the prudent play is to label anything and everything. Beaches, for example, have the label because sand has silica, a chemical known to the... you know the rest. It's of very little concern to you... worry about more likely things like getting struck by lightning while holding a winning lottery ticket...

Not sure why people think labels are a bad thing. Think about how silly your country is that lawn darts and kinder surprises are banned as they are dangerous to kids, and yet (Monsato, Roundup, meat and dairy quality, etc...)... I mean, people back in the day used to drink pure mercury, brush their teeth with paste made from asbestos, good thing people found out it wasn't good for them...

It's up the OP what they should/shouldn't do, but I'd take that Prob 65 warning as info I'd use to make my purchase decision. It wouldn't stop me from buying it, but it may someone else and that's the point. Info is power for each individual to use as they see fit.

I get everyone's apprehension in CA for Prob 65 as it certainly can be, and often is, used as a cash grab for some companies.

California is more about state rights than South Carolina was in the 1860’s. They’re gonna use that 10th amendment like Rosie O’Donnell uses a fork.

... Amen! As much as Americans love to claim how great this country is (of course in some limited ways they are right) they have let a Corporatocracy produce and sell the most egregious products including non food substances creating the most obese and sickest people on the planet. Then of course they pump them full of pharmaceuticals. The fact that Roundup is illegal in the country that produces it should tell us something. Of course "everything causes cancer" because the US Government allows toxic chemicals in practically everything. Those of us that take care of our bodies as well as our family certainly appreciate any labels that let us know harmful chemicals are used in a product. Having ignorant people complain about California is a very small price to pay.

DO NOT EAT THAT TOWEL!

And especially, do not make a strict diet of consuming those towels. And don’t roll it up and smoke it. You can occasionally snort one, but don’t make a habit of it.
