  • Short game is not more important than driving for mid to high handicappers.  How many times does a chip or a putt cause you to take a drop?  Penalty strokes are the biggest killer to a weekend player, by far.
  • Speaking of "drops", there needs to be a quick primer (before the first tee, on the scorecard, whatever) on how penalties work for each situation.  You'd be surprised how many weekend golfers/newbies think if you hit a tee shot into a water hazard, it is just shot #2 and not #3...but when you think about it, having to hit your 2nd shot from the tee box really is pretty penalizing as is...
  • You are a cry baby if you think barely audible music from a small speaker is ruining your enjoyment of the game.
  • A decent amount of the fun of golf is finding a slick-looking polo that accentuates your features, putting on a hat from a course you have played before, and generally just looking half-decent.
  • Tucked, untucked, whatever...I just don't get how people can play in an untucked shirt with any wind out at all.  Drives me crazy.
  • You should be able to play at a real "muni" in a t-shirt and athletic shorts.
  • You hardos should try walking 18 holes in Dallas in July.
  • I've been playing golf for 5 years (I know that ain't jack compared to most on here) and I have only been peeved with slow play one time...I think a lot of y'all just need something to complain about...which is okay!
  • Thanks 3

I'd like to stir the pot

1. IN TODAY"S GAME - most wins is more impressive than most majors. (especially when you have 15 majors)

2. Scotty Camerons just aren't that cool anymore.....unless you have a circle t.....but if you have a circle t and you can't putt....you paid $3,000 to get mocked all day.

3. You don't really wanna date a cart girl.

4. Golf is more fun with a little money on the line.

5. I'd rather play an expensive course once......than a cheap course three times. (*opinion subject to change due to gas prices)

6. My dog is professionally trained he should be allowed to walk with me. He can even help with the squirrel problem.

I generally avoid their nonsense but I did watch the round at Wolf Creek in Mesquite, NV prior to playing it Wednesday to get an idea of what to expect. (Spoiler alert - no camera totally captures what an insane course that is ... seriously. I do not recommend it if you're uncomfortable with heights.)

The fact that they tried to say dude shot 77 there? Not a chance. None. Zero.

Yeah i avoid it too unless they're at a course i want to see like you said or they have someone cool on (like all their taylormade vids).

Agreed, zero percent chance of him breaking even like 85 out there

Short game is about distance control, long game is about dispersion control but everybody reverses the emphasis which is a scoring killer that holds most all back from going next level.

This is the exact reason where I lose shots - off the tee OB/hazards or leaving myself far too long from the hole on the green, and it's all I work on.

Unpopular opinion 1 - Carts are only for folks with a medical condition. Walking 18 and scoring well while tired are part of the physical aspects of the game. If the course is in a playable condition, don't use hot weather as an excuse as to why you should use a cart.  (Try living in Norway, where you only have about 5 months to work on your game before it's off to the indoor facilities to practice the rest of the year 😉)

Unpopular opinion 2 - Golf is the ultimate participation trophy sport - where else would you use handicapping in competition play just so that everyone has a chance to win? I understand you need it to keep people playing as it's a bl**dy hard game as it is, but think about. Disclaimer - I say this as I just lost a match play to an opponent that I had to give up 13 strokes over 18 holes. On every hole he had a stroke, he hit 6/7 iron off the tee on the par 4's. I was 3 down after 12, played 13-17 in 1 under, was 1 up after 17, and he won the 18th as he had a stroke and we tied it on bogeys (Stroke Index 1). He won on the 1st playoff hole, a par 5, and I hit into the pot bunker in the fairway and gave up whatever advantage I had and we both finished with par.

Came to Golf WRX this morning for this specific reason! I have a match play tournament this weekend and I'm going in as the #1 seed in the net portion so I'll be giving strokes in every match. I'm of the opinion I'd rather be giving than getting, but that really applies to the guys I play regularly and I know their index is legitimate.

Which brings me to my unpopular opinion.

If you want to compete in handicapped events, you have to cheat your index, if you're not willing or able, and somehow manage to still win, you will still be labeled as a sandbagger.

😅 - warmest that I've played at my home course here in Trondheim has been 27°C (81°F to y'all) where I've carried my clubs, but it varies between 12°C and 18°C on average during the season. Around season start (early May) and season end (end Sept) it's around 10°Cish.

I'm not hating on people using carts if they reaaaaallly need to or the course design is so stupid to warrant a mini hike to the next tee box, but as the topic of thread is 'unpopular' opinions, it seems to have struck a cord 😉.

buuuuut - hottest I've played at was this past easter in India where I was out at around 38°C (100°F) but this was with a caddy (he got to use my umbrella - I'm not inconsiderate). I used UV sun sleeves to protect my arms, and a bucket hat for my neck and face (plus that I have some natural colour on my skin to help with the sun). Clubhouse stop after 9 for a break and refreshments, and a well earned beer after 18.

Lets just say - I'm jealous of anyone that is able to play golf year round 😀.

... I have set the bar lower this year and won't walk over 100* anymore. Desert courses provide little shade and 4-4.5 hours in that heat under bright sun light is a recipe for heat stroke. I will ride up to 112* and after that it is a day indoors.

This will be unpopular but:

Carry bag or push cart or robot following you. You're just as tired with either one. I carry, or pay for robot, my fatigue is exact same. I've used pull carts, find them fatiguing and annoying, so default is carry but robot is option. Game is no better later in round, still nap after round on couch too. Carrying a bag is really not as big of a liability as it's made out to be.

That being said they probably have one of the best jobs ever. Their content just sucks compared to the likes of NLU and others.

Definitely one of the best jobs I would imagine. Their stuff is meh, and seems geared more towards the kind of golfer who plays and ends up throwing a club every other shot.

Unpopular opinions...

1.) Too many folks on the BST forum  (basically this only applies to the WTB portion)  want new or mint condition items and want to pay practically nothing for them.   there is nothing wrong with posting on there, but I see a lot of "Looking for Ping i59 irons with no wear.  Not looking to spend more than $200."  Obviously this is an exaggeration, but you get the point.   I once had somebody rationalize why I should sell an item at a very low price because they were in college and didn't have much money to pay.  I wanted to respond with "Then get a job.".  Instead I replied with, "I can't go that low.".  There is nothing wrong with haggling and making offers, but many expect a Circle T putter at an Intech price.

2.) People get very loose with the definition of "like new", "almost no wear" or "mint" on here. A driver with a sky mark and scratches on the sole is not "mint".

3.)  Jack is the greatest of all-time..better than Tiger.

1. OB, Lost Balls and yellow/red hazards should all be treated the same.

2. You should be able to rehit and count both shots, but no penalty.

3. You should be able to place all penalty "drops"

4. You should be able to go back along the line you entered (i.e. for an unplayabe lie)

I remember reading about an older lady who walked a mile to the supermarket and back in dangerously hot weather.  She collapsed near her front door on the trip back and ended up dying.  Just that close to making it home.

Heat is no joke.

I carried my bag or push cart for the most part of 40 years of playing golf. Now at near 70 with bad knees, back, hips and a recent quadruple bypass, I ride a cart.

I have nothing left to prove.

Most unpopular; using a foot wedge every other hole, dropping in the fairway from the woods and picking up 4 foot lags while “shooting” an 82!

1. If the course lets people play in an outfit, it's nobody else's place to pass judgement.  What you wear has no effect on golfing ability.  I would smoke 99% of the people that get their panties in a twist about this.  If it's not a private club with a strict dress code, leave your opinion at home.  The whole "respect the course" and "tuck in your shirt, have some decency" funny.  They should focus more on respecting the game by practicing and not hacking up the course & playing 5+ hour rounds.

2. Social Media (Tiktok, IG, etc.) is a detriment to golf (and humanity in general).  First started noticing it with the "driving carts into golfers" trend several years back.  Barstool Golf (as mentioned in this thread) sucks.

3. Singles should be able to book online tee times (course dependent).  Hate having to call the clubhouse or show up at the course to ask.

4. I don't really care if someone wants to say they "shot xx" while ignoring mulligans & drops as we're not playing for money.  I don't understand why people would want to diminish and muddy their actual improvement by lying about scores, but whatever.

5. Walking is superior and I dislike when courses auto-include a cart fee into the green fee.

The rules of golf apply to tournaments and posting scores to GHIN. If you don’t play by the rules, don’t post to GHIN.

However if you want to give yourself every putt inside 5 feet and never putt anything out, please post that score to GHIN.

Also, if you want to take a couple of mulligans, when your tee shot went OB and your mulligan got you a par on the hole, please post your score to GHIN.

If you haven’t posted a score to GHIN in 6 months and want to play in our member guest, do you mind if I reduce your handicap by 5 strokes so no one can accuse you of sandbagging?

Also, if you enter a flighted tournament as a 10 handicap, just to get in the C flight, and then you shoot even par, don’t be shocked when everyone and their mother calls you a sandbagger.

I hate net tournaments purely on the fact that there are more sandbaggers then grains of sand in that bunker by the first green. If you need strokes, go play someone else. If you can’t beat me straight up, then take Tiger’s advice and play better.
