Practicing putts between 15-20 feet is a waste of time for most amateur golfers.  Putts holed between those distances are going to largely go in accidentally. Time is better spent on short putts inside 8 ft and putts 25+ feet to avoid 3 putting.

why would this be an unpopular opinion?

I would think others would contend that putts from 15-20 ft for amateurs don't go in accidentally.  That they hit the right starting line with the putt with the right speed and it was skill not luck.

Practicing from 15-20ft or beyond on the putting green should be more for speed/lag or at least should be for most people. When I line up from that distance on the course I'm not expecting to make it but I'm expecting to have a tap in putt and you can't get that without practicing from 15-20ft

Barring any extremely loud/abrupt noises, the average player should be able to handle some noise during their swing. Music coming from an adjacent green or someone in your group having a quiet conversation shouldn’t affect the outcome of your shot.

It depends on how loud the music is being played. Some people think EVERYBODY should love their type of music and insist on blasting it so the whole world can hear.

I agree with you, no need for everyone on the course to hear your music. But I’m talking more about using the noise as an excuse for a bad shot. I think part of the game is being able to focus and drown out distractions.

I agree, normal everyday noise shouldn't be a distraction.

True.  You can even buy these on Amazon to be more discreet. https://www.amazon.com/Premium-Golf-Cooler-Bag-Stay-Cold/dp/B09TKY25ZP/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=golf+beer+sleeve&qid=1661884650&sprefix=golf+beer+%2Caps%2C71&sr=8-6

I think the issue, for me, anyway, is that I try to super vigilant about not causing distractions for other players, and what I've found bugs me is not the noise, it's is the discourteousness of the other player.  I'll say it's music, but really it's the fact the guy is a jackwagon that gets on my nerves.

I’m not disagreeing that ideally most people would be respectful and follow the silent (pun intended) rules of the game. My point is that those kinds of things are out of our control for the most part, and it shouldn’t affect performance.

I always bring my personal favorite Italian vineyard labeling... in an opaque canister and I call it my Italian Sports Drink.  Never been confronted.   I played in a tournament yesterday with the Assistant Pro and the Course Superintendent.  One was toting a sleeve of beers and the other a margarita in a canister.  A Mexican Sports Drink.

If someone wants to be technical they can have theit health care provider write a letter saying they need to have water available right then and there. That comes then under several FEDERAL health care acts. In fact our course encourages it and gives out free bottled water

I don't think water is the issue.  It's alcohol.  Have to assume it's the same in every state or province that outside alcohol could put the course's liquor license in jeopardy.  That is the issue.

In Indiana it’s a State law, alcohol must be purchased on the premises and none to be brought to the course.

Yet I’ve never have seen it enforced.

Being diabetic I bring sugar free Gatorade and water all the time as to not be forced to buy sugary drinks. Never has been a problem at any course.

There are two kinds of putts. Ones where line is most important - typically I'd think this is sub 12 feet, and ones where speed is most important - 25 feet plus. If you practise your speed from 30 feet and your line from 8 feet, you're going to wind up pretty solid from 15-20 feet anyway, but if you practise from 15-20 feet then you're only helping your 15-20 foot results, not your 8 footers and not your 30 footers.

Another way to think of it is if you plot "putts to hole out" by distance and have a line for good putters and bad putters, the gap between them will be bigger at 8 feet and at 30 feet than it will at 15 feet. 15 feet is short enough you shouldn't three putt, but long enough that it's hard to one putt, so really hard to differentiate yourself there. Poor putters three putt a lot from 30 feet and miss a lot of 8 footers. Good putters don't three putt and make about half their 8 footers.

Another opinion of mine:

All the major golf club manufacturers make great clubs.  Buy what fits you or simply what you like the look of; whether it is Ping, Callaway, Taylormade, Srixon, Mizuno, PXG, Titleist, Cleveland, Tour Edge, etc.

Enforcement can be lax.  Problem is you get that one bureaucrat looking to make a name for themselves, or someone with an axe to grind, and now all of a sudden a big source of revenue is gone.  So they at least have to post it in their rules.

Same Liquor Control law applies here in Missouri.  Our course has a posted sign that all beverages must be purchased at the Pro Shop.  It would be too hard to monitor if people bring their own coolers.  Plus, the Pro Shop wants and needs the sales.

It's a big CYA situation.

Some douchecanoe drinks to much not from the bar (since they're not suppose to be over served). The signage pretty much protects the course as it shows negligence on the person breaking the rule and not the staff/ course if someone wanted to pull their Liquor License

It's not about jeopardizing their license,  it's protection of their exclusive ability to sell overpriced beers.

I think the course looks the other way.  Or doesn't look at all.  I agree... it seems like a CYA thing.
