However, in match play your opponent has the right to not allow you to putt out if he / she is further from the hole.

Yup, doing that I'm match play well result in a loss for that hole.

When your random playing partner goads you that you're gonna make a four putt which was what actually happened to me last Saturday at Bethpage Blue, you can be given a free pass to say humble brag things to shut him up like "it really doesn't matter to me when I make a four putt during a non-tournament round like this as I've already won 6 tournaments in 4 years on two different tours ."

I'm a pretty low-key guy and will not even think of saying things like this to anyone but I felt that it was the right moment to say it just to shut him up.

I was glad it worked as the guy stopped goading me from that point on.

I've been playing mostly with random golfers for the past 4 years but I was fortunate that almost all of the random golfers have been decent people except for this guy who even claims to have caddied for 25 years at a private club.

In fact, aside from goading me while putting, he also made the "accidental mistake" of playing my ball on hole #5.

I took it as an honest mistake but I think he crossed the line when he started goading me while putting so I had no choice but to try and shut him up.

You'd think that with his extensive experience in caddying that he'd know that goading a random golfer is not a good thing to do.

Anyway, I was also fortunate that he decided to only play 9 holes so I was a bit relieved.

However, I still had one other random British guy with me and although he wasn't as talkative as the other guy, he was still playing so bad that he was hitting a variety of mishits from the teebox like shanks left and right as well as topped shots.

Nevertheless, I still took a positive experience from that as I wasn't affected at all.

That wasn't the case in the past where I would be affected and make the same mishits.

Anyway, I think that this round of golf must be in the top 3 worst rounds that I've played in the last 4 years only because of the combination of having a goader and a shanker for playing partners.

Despite the challenges, I was still a bit happy with my round as I was able to make a Birdie on the 17th as the light was fading and also being able to complete my round in 3 hours in 53 minutes

  • Weekend/Prime time rounds should be played to Stableford scoring - if you're out of the hole, pick up and move on.
  • Handicapped competitions should also be played to Stableford - none of this net score BS. Out of the hole - take your zero and move on.
  • Save Stroke play when the course is not busy, or you're playing in a non-handicapped competition.
  • Match play is far better, more engaging, and more enjoyable than Stroke play 🙂

That actually happened to me in a tournament. I opted to putt out after leaving my putt 3 feet short gain over 20 feet away and my flight mate got pissed for supposedly finishing out of turn.

My tournament director sided with me as putting out instead of marking helps with the pace of play.

Whenever I putt out I'm also mindful of not stepping on the putting path of the other players in my flight.

In stroke play, you can always continuous putt if you want to. There are two main reasons not to:

  1. You don't feel like it.
  2. You would be standing in someone's line to do so

Pretty sure I played in an annual tournament with one of those guys. Don’t remember if I already posted it but…

The tournament is usually a dozen guys and hold 4 dinners each year. In an effort to keeps things simple, the check is split evenly. Period. One of the first year guys was warned in advance when he ordered just a cheese burger and a couple Coors light. He thought they were joking until they asked him for $80. Ouch.

So “that guy” (and I’m not exaggerating any of this) orders 3-5 top shelf drinks, several appetizers, 2 FULL entrees and several desserts every freaking night! When the bill comes he insists on using his rewards card and asks everyone for cash.

We have to watch him like hawk or the poor waitress will get 5% or less. He’s also the guy that climbs a mountain or descends a cliff to retrieve his errant top flight.

Keeping the bill simple with Mr cheapo would never happen when he is eating with us. The first thing Mr cheapo says when the person waiting on us comes over to our table is this is going to be separate checks. He never fails with saying that first thing.

As far as tipping goes I had a big problem with him and I ended up having words with him. When everyone would get up from the table and leave their tip he would scoop up everyone's tip and put it in the middle of the table and then throw a $1 on the pile. I ended up telling him don't touch my money. If you want to be cheap with your tip that's your business but don't try to hide your cheapness in with everyone's tip.

You could auction off a round with him.  I would pay just to see this guy in action (not really).  Maybe start a vlog with his antics.

Yup.  Match play in the States is what guy’s do to light their cigars on the first tee while preparing to hit their tee shot five minutes late for their tee time…

Sometimes there's a long history with a guy like that before this stuff comes into the open. Making it difficult to break things off with him. Maybe he has other redeeming qualities.  @Greenie would know.

I mentioned earlier in this thread that he has always been reliable and on time. I guess these are lasting qualities and outweigh all the negatives as far as many people are concerned. Most people that know him accept him for the way he is and find his ways as funny, entertaining, etc. He irritates the "h"out of me. I have expressed my issues about him plenty of times and some how I am that guy! I get I let too many things bother me. It's him not you don't let it bother you kind of comments . He is in my group of golfers because he is reliable plain and simple.

I am certainly not trying to hang around this tool. lol ..Unfortunately a lot of my friends and my wife's friends are his friends too. When our friends we have in common with him invite us to do something together they usually invite him too. I try to avoid inviting him to things I do but most of the time he will find out through one of my other friends I invited and invite himself when it is outside of golf.

I wish the guys I play golf with drop him from the group but the guys that they dropped are the ones that are not reliable. Reliable wins.

Reliable as in he shows up?  Because that a pretty low bar…

Honestly, if he was a great guy and just cheap as the day is long, I’d just tell him to forget the tips.  I’ll tip for him and he can just leave the table early…

Yes reliable as in he shows up. I disagree being reliable as being low bar.

You and I wouldn't be doing things together if you can't give me an answer, show up late, fail to show up, or back out after you commit.  I'll allow anyone one time and if it happens again I am done with you.

I use to coach and run a softball team, played pro paintball and ran a golf group. I rank reliability at the top. There have been plenty of people that I have done activities with that I really enjoyed playing with that weren't asked again after a second time of any of the above because I won't deal with any of that.

I joined my group happy to get away from this guy. The guy running this group played in my old group. After he asked me to join this group he began to have problems with a few of the guys in the group not committing or backing out . He asked me if Mr cheapo was still playing golf and I said yes he was but you don't want him in the group. He is worse than before. He asked him to play because he knew he has always been reliable. No one cares for him but yes he gets asked because they know he will show up.

Oh I agree 100%.  But I don’t give anyone credit for simply doing that; them’s table stakes in my book.

I got into the game while I was studying at VT way back when. Took a break for about 10 years after I moved here, and then started again in 2013 once the kids were slightly older.

Playing here, Stableford is the norm just to keep pace of play up. Been pretty good up until the last couple of years. Most new golfers can't figure out the points system and insist on finishing out the holes - hence my little rant.

I sweat a lot a lot so any sort of stretching is less wear and tear then the sweat damage.  I also don't want my hand to be pale white by the end of the season while the rest of me is tan.  I never really thought about how often I take it off but I guess doing the math it would be 36 times.  I guess at this point it's automatic.

Just curious, why would it be 36? Assuming you take it off to putt. So a maximum of 18 times. If you hole out a chip for example it would be 17 times. 18 greens, 18 times the glove comes off.

I take it off after every shot, don't use a glove for chipping/putting or really anything inside of 50 yards. Might be less but just a guess.

yeah, that’s just a bit of hyperbole.

I play both private and public and don’t see much of a difference at all.  Some people play match/skins, and some just play their own round.  Probably more of the public play their own game (I.e., no game at all) because they’re often paired with people they don’t know.  I don’t care to play match with people that I don’t know, and rarely do it on private or public courses.

But I played public only golf with buddies for years, and we played the same matches that we do in our clubs now.

Players who get caught using range balls on the course should be escorted off the property, and banned from the course for a month for the first offense. Keep the range balls on the range. If one can't afford a handful of cheap, used golf balls then maybe pickleball is a better sport for you.

Range balls on the course people here are usually people that take a bunch of them out and practice while nobody is around.  And then leave them for someone else to pick up...

In lay golfer speak it is alternate shot.

Lets say you win charity auction and get to play one time at a nice course, would you consider foursomes?

I think it's a cool format for an event or to switch things up at the home club when playing with friends but no way I play it at a course I don't get to play regularly.

lol....I remember a range ball incident that happened to a guy in my group some years ago. He had found a range ball on the course we were playing. We come to a par 3 over water and this guy pulls out the range ball he had found a few holes back to use. He pulls his shot so bad that it ends up in the adjacent fairway. One of the guys coming down the other fairway asks him what ball he is playing and he says it was a range ball. This guy goes off on him. It really pissed the guy off that he was using a range ball. I thought it was hilarious this guy was blowing a gasket over a range ball. In all fairness the guy found it in the weeds on a hole no where close to the driving range.

I find plenty of balls on the course and pick up most of them. I never pick up a range ball. One reason is I would never play a range ball and another reason is I think of the time that guy went ballistic on that guy in my group. I can't imagine someone stealing range balls and playing them during their round.
