I agree completely. Most beginning golfers have terrible grips, getting that right at the start makes a huge difference. In my opinion, changing a grip you're used to is one if the mist difficult changes you can make.

The grip was something that never felt comfortable to me, and when I thought I had it down, turned out it was super strong. I ordered one of those simple grip trainers and it’s greatly improved my hand placement on the club which resulted in more consistent improvement on the other things I needed

to focus on in my swing.

I agree with Archimedes as I think Scottder1100's approach not to take formal lessons isn't really a conventional approach.

On the other hand, there are a few special individuals who have been self-taught including some professionals like Bubba who have had success.

However, I think most people may require formal lessons.

I managed to get as low as 2 index without lessons. I was playing probably 4 rounds a week and at the range at least twice (not including warm up sessions), but still, lol.

I did take 1 lesson, within a week started to develop signs of carpel tunnel using what the instructor taught within a week (I don't think it was actually carpel tunnel, but did the webmd self test and diagnosis matched, lol), went back to my swing and the pain went away within a few days. Never had another lesson.

Matching grip, ferrule, and shaft colors that are in hues more suitable for a bag of skittles comes across as way too try hard.

There should be a flat rate at the golf Sim no peak/prime hours pricing.  Also black or colored golf shafts should be the same price.  I guess I’m cheap lol.

Perhaps I already said this.  The thread is 5 years old and 71 pages.  if so, sorry.

Golf carts cause slow play.

Fight me.

If used properly by two people or used by a single generally they won't cause slow play.

  • Weekend/Prime time rounds should be played to Stableford scoring - if you're out of the hole, pick up and move on.
  • Handicapped competitions should also be played to Stableford - none of this net score BS. Out of the hole - take your zero and move on.
  • Save Stroke play when the course is not busy, or you're playing in a non-handicapped competition.
  • Match play is far better, more engaging, and more enjoyable than Stroke play 🙂

100% agree

I play 3-4 times a week and they're all match play.  For a dime.  When we play with a stranger they are always curious why our matches are so intense (even though we're mostly joking around)... they want to know how many hundreds of dollars we're playing for.

They can be,  but that thing Ping calls a chipper is just a 7i with a short handle.  I could just use my 7i, thanks, ping.  Chippers should most closely resemble putters with a lot more loft, imo.

I personally think Clevelands chipper is way more easier to use than Pings. My wife and kid both have one, and every time I try it out, my Gapr makes a scene.

What club do you take out of your bag?

Something from the top end - usually either the 3 wood or 4 iron but haven’t done so in a while. Practiced with my 50 deg to do what the chipper does.

With an open course AND used properly by 2 people they are faster than walking.

Used improperly they can absolutely cause slow play.  Occasionally we have a group of 2 walkers and 2 riders.  When I walk I usually beat the riders to the tee and often the green.

That being said, put me and my usual partner in a cart with nobody in front and we beat our walking time by at least 30 min.

Biggest difference is players needing to ride together to each other's shots instead of one dropped off at or near their ball while the driver heads on to theirs. You'd think some twosomes and moresomes are in love the way they're have to be near each other for every shot.

True. And things are at their worst when it's cart path only.

You'll cringe but I have a golf friend I rarely play with but when it's CPO he'll walk entirely across the fairway to scope the distance, then come back to the cart to get the correct club. Drives everyone nuts.

They must have an aversion to carrying three clubs in their hand. And a bit of insensitivity toward pace of play.

Well, the same bloke likes to have a chat on the tee before hitting his shot, so yes he does😞

CPO is hell. I like to walk courses, but there are a few we play that due to the hills and some long walks between holes we usually ride. If it's CPO? Hell no. I'll even walk those courses.

I played a day that was CPO and it was myself walking, another single walking, and then a twosome in carts. One of the twosome was a lefty and sliced a lot, which meant (since most carts go down the right side of holes for righties who slice) he was walking across the fairway just about every hole. Myself and the other walking single would be at our ball and hitting and walking again, long before him, despite him having a cart.

Ugggh!  I swear, every time I play cart path only my shot is on the opposite side of the fairway from the cart path. Not because I'm wild with the driver, but because I'm playing the hole, not the cart path.
