The amount of grown men I have seen almost come to blows in the 6th flight over this is mind blowing!

What would the guys argument be for trying to take it? If you want a gallery, invite 20 buddies out to follow you around.

I think making him leave the club is a bit harsh. 

 

I understand his sentiment. We've all been there. You know it's a good drive. You know it should be *RIGHT HERE*, but you cannot find it. Even more frustrating when it is in competition, because to have to take stroke and distance in this instance feels extremely harsh. 

 

That said, you are correct, you cannot play by this rule in competition (or actual handicap rounds). I just... I get it from his side, even if he cannot take that free drop.

I’ve seen it during tourneys where it’s super wet. our course has several holes where every ball in the foursome plugs.  If the group knows for a certainty it wasn’t in a hazard or OB and agrees generally where it landed, you can drop.  It helps with pace of play as well. Without the rule it’s just a luckfest as to who gets screwed by not being able to find a ball we all saw land in the middle of the fairway.

As long as it’s a model local rule that everyone is playing by, I totally get it.

 

But if my competitor or even my playing partner/teammate drills one down the middle of the fairway in a normal event with no special rules and then can’t find the ball for whatever reason, it’s a lost ball.  And not only would I laugh if they suggested taking a drop, I’d explain to them that not only would they be DQ’d, I would as well if I agreed to it.  They could either go back and re-tee, or just head to the bar.

Yep. I can’t imagine even asking this in an event at my place. No, no, no. Our membership isn’t huge, but man the needles would come out and you’d never hear the end of it.
 

Try that in a money game anywhere and you’d have a problem too.

Don't know, but it happened to me once. Perfectly dry day so no chance of a ball plugging. Hole is hitting to a blind landing area, but the fairway is very wide and flat. To the left of the fairway there is VERY light rough (i.e. you can see your ball from 50+ yards away rough) with a massive upslope that would stop a ball from going further left, and to the right there is a dry riverbed filled with pebbles. 

 

I was playing an Optic Yellow Snell ball, and hit the most beautiful baby push draw that started just right of center and was curving back to the middle. 

 

Get out there. No ball. No burrowing animal holes, nothing I could see that it could have hit and bounced off at a weird angle. Nothing in the left rough. Nothing in the riverbed--and that Optic Yellow Snell would have completely stood out against the pebbles. 

 

I have to blame some interdimensional rift. Some golfer on the same course in a parallel dimension came up the fairway after they hit and wondered "who would leave a perfectly good Snell MTB-X out here in the middle of the fairway?"

Yup, but,  in our reality, your ball obviously bounced somewhere and was lost.  Maybe it hit sprinkler head and shot into some trees.  Either way it’s the randomness of golf and, as such, it’s a lost ball.

 

The issue with allowing drops on obviously good shots is that golfers would push the envelope.  If I had a nickel for every time I heard someone who hit a shot just in the edge rough say ‘it should be right here’ when they can’t find their ball, even though the ball obviously just kept going into the caca, I’d have a ton of nickels.

Losing a ball in the middle of the fairway is STILL one of the most infuriating things in the game of golf tho!

Usually it's over the crest of  a hill and you really tagged the ball.  You want to get to the ball to discover it's your long drive record for that hole... but instead, NUTHIN'.
