Your most unpopular Golf opinions?

Golf course reviewers need to find balance. No gushing, no butt kissing. But please, critique is not the same as complaining.

My place’s bunkers are pretty ornery. Small stones in many of them. Seriously imperfect and even a bit inconsistent….and I’m fine with that! They are bunkers. Not greens, which should be consistent.

Maybe actually a popular opinion, but I feel passionately about this:

Replace your grips at least once a year.

New grips feel amazing, like clean underwear or fresh socks. Too many folks just settle for slick grips, please stop it lol.

Popular opinion with very poor execution, so I think it fits.

Words of advice:  Do NOT change grips right before a golf trip.  Seems like a good idea right?  I like the GP midsize MCC cord grips.  There were a few seasons old before I changed them right before a 4 day trip.  My right hand felt shredded by the 5th hole.  I literally could not hold the club.  Fortunately one of the guys on the trip had tape in his bag and I made it through.

If you stop at the turn and the group behind you gets to the next tee box before you and the fairway is open you should lose your spot.

This happened to our group today. Group in front stopped at the snack shack after 9. We were able to play out our third shots into a par 5, putt out, walk to 10 tee, see an open fairway, tee off and start walking to our balls before the group behind even made it to 10 tee. The group originally in front and now behind all drove their carts down the fairway screaming and yelling how we have budged in front of them. I proceeded to tell them we were doing our part to keep pace of play up during a fairly slow round on the course and by the time they get back to the tee box we will be on the green and out of their way. They were having none of that.

Any opinions or thoughts?

Saying that a newport is just an anser is like saying that a new Ferrari is just like a Model T because it has 4 wheels, internal combustion engine, gas and brake pedals and doors.  The nuance in the differences matter too much.  What is more true is that the Ping PLD line is more of a rip off of the refined milled putters from Cameron, Bettinardi and others than was ever stolen from Ping.

I felt too much like Eastwood in Gran Torino just now (in a bad way).  My apologies, everybody.

I agree with you 100%. I think every course should have a sign posted at the nine green saying if you stop at the turn you might lose your place.

My foursome were playing behind a foursome of women. We were polite to them as we waited on them on every hole on the front nine. As we got to the ninth green we watched them ride to the clubhouse, walk up the steps to the club house and go inside. This course has nice bathrooms on the ground level and a snack shack. These women went inside the main club house so we didn't think anything about having an issue about playing through. We used the bathrooms, teed off and two of us had already hit our approach shots when here comes these women riding down the fairway towards us. They bitched us out for jumping in front of them. When I said you all went into the main clubhouse so we didn't know what you were planning on doing. The one women said we should have come into the clubhouse and asked if it was ok to play through. I replied they have bathrooms on the ground level and a snack shack to keep POP moving. I said we used the bathrooms , teed off and two of us have already hit our approach shots and now you show up complaining. I don't get some people.

Did they drive all the way out there to chew you out... without even teeing off themselves?  Or were they already in the fairway with their tee shots?

I am OK with picking one or the other.  In the midwest, many courses have a culture where everybody stops, supports the restaurant/snack bar, uses the restroom and stuff... some change their shoes/shirts in the summer (this is really nice).  If you skip, then you are the jerk at these courses and the 10 minutes is built in.  In Colorado, nobody stops and you do get jumped if you are not fast and you are a jerk if you stop.

This whole debate is highly dependent on the culture and customs of different parts of the country, IMO.

There is little doubt that the courses with the culture to stop have restaurants and snack shops with better service, snacks and food.

They drove all the way out there to chew us out before teeing off. We play ready golf. I was at my ball ready to take my shot, the other guy at his ball waiting to hit. The third guy was taking his shot. I looked back and saw them heading to their tee box. The went right by their tee box and made a beeline down the fairway towards us. I told the other guy you better hold up here comes those women riding down the middle of the fairway towards us.

I don't see why some people have an issue with this. It's like what's the big deal in letting someone play through if you are slower. To me the same thing applies here. If you want to stop and the group behind doesn't why not let them play through? Keep things moving.

We played last Friday and the group in front of us stopped to grab some beer. We went on to 10 and teed off. They showed up as we were walking off the tee box and we said go ahead and tee off you can have your spot. They replied no we don't have a problem with you guys teeing off. Let's keep things moving.

Just hoping that by the time they got back to the tee box there was another group trying to tee off on number 10. Karma.

In the clubs with the culture to stop, there is no room to skip ahead - nobody is being slow.  People who think that they are smart see a group in the clubhouse and then assume that they can move on, but the group in front of them took the stop too and have not teed off on 10 yet.  There is no room to play through... you just get to the 10 tee sooner.

In the places where nobody stop, then it makes a bunch of sense to go ahead a go, but if you go, you need to be further along than just leaving the tee before the skipped group gets up there.  Saving 1 minute is not worth it, but saving a whole spot on the course is a good idea.

I think that most people are mixing up the two different scenarios and the root of the issue is the lack of self awareness and seeing the big picture as to wether the stop and/or skip is a good idea or not.  Sometimes, you need to go to the clubhouse too, or just wait... sometimes you don't... but it is never truly about you.

Actually the group behind us made it to the tee and was watching everything.

The women were holding up the course on the front. We were going to ask them if we could play through on ten but since they went upstairs and into the main clubhouse we thought problem solved.

I commented this is all for nothing and now you have the group behind us waiting. I said I didn't see what the big deal was and that you should let faster groups play through anyway. We finished 10 and didn't see them the rest of the day. I doubt they let the guys waiting on the tee play through or anyone else for that matter.

I agree with what you have posted. As I mentioned above last Friday we teed off on 10.The group ahead were on the green. While we were walking of the tee the other group showed up. We offered their spot back and it probably didn't make much sense in us teeing off to begin with. Sometimes you don't know what is best to do. They might have been in there for a longer time ordering food. You just don't know.

Most of the courses I play you usually see most groups heading straight to ten. Sometimes people stop for a restroom break. Usually that doesn't allow enough time for someone to jump ahead. I have never been one to stop for food.

I wasn't that they were women (and that wasn't your intention) but as "people" they were lacking in etiquette and appeared entitled.

Karsten’s grand kids be like…

This looks more like they were rushing towards the scrap metal heap to find cheap metals to melt down and pour into their castings before other manufacturers showed them how to make clubs out of better materials and with different metal working techniques.  Ping has adapted to use these materials and techniques today.  PLD would not likely exist today without Cameron.

I somewhat kid.  There is no doubt that Karsten did a lot of good and golf would not be what it was without him... but there is also no doubt that a brand new F1 or Ferrari would not be what it is today without Henry Ford.  Giving all the credit for today's products to either Ford or Karsten is folly.  As a guy who played in the 90s when Cameron started to mill Mizuno and early Titleist putters, TP Mills started to use high quality steel, etc... there was no comparison of a 1980s ping to one of these putters and when a good player first rolled one, they could tell the difference immediately.  A 2024 anser would likely just be a cheap casting still if not for Cameron, Betti, TP and the rest that were involved in the 90s and early 2000s.  I think that it is good when they make each other better.

Do I get the unpopular take of the day for this post?

Makes sense, but everyone needs to be on the same page.  When I played in St. Louis in my early 20's that was the standard.  Everybody stopped for a quick lunch... and the air conditioning!
