**Mitsubishi MMT shafts (125TX)**

 

First, I want to thank Mitsubishi and GolfWRX for putting this opportunity together. I had a discussion with WRX about the new MMT shafts and how I’m really looking hard at switching to graphite due to bouts with tennis and golfers elbow. The wear-and-tear from years of sports catches up with all of us and I'm at the point where I’m ready to make the switch IF it makes sense from a performance standpoint. I play a lot of competitive amateur golf (at least I did before the elbow issues) so I will only switch if I feel it's the same if not better than what i'm currently using. That goes for my entire bag. If I find these aren't what I'm looking for I will most likely go the insert route. As I said I sincerely appreciate Mitsubishi providing shafts for the test but I won't sacrifice my scoring ability just to write a positive review.

 

 

 

**_A little about myself_**

 

**HCP :** I range from +1.9 to 0 this year

**Driver SS :** 115’ish on course.

**6 iron SS:** 93-94mph

**Swing Type :** Think Tony Finau or John Rahm in terms of swing length and aggressive transition.

 

 

**REVIEW Questions that I want to answer:**

**1.** Can the Mitsubishi MMT’s truly replace heavier steel shafts, particularly my Modus 120TX's

**2.** Will these shafts take the stress off my joints, particularly my elbows and wrists.

 

With that said these arrived late last week and I'm just getting around to building some of the irons up. I will be adding info and more pics as I practice and get rounds in. For this review I have 2 identical sets of irons. This will be APPLES TO APPLES. I will be focusing on a long iron (#4), a mid iron (#7), and a short iron (#9). I will also be adding wedges later in the test.

** Mitsubishi MMT shafts (125TX)**

Refresher:

**I set out to answer two main questions:**

 

1. Can the Mitsubishi MMT’s replace my trusty steel shafts?

2. Will these shafts take the stress off my joints, particularly my elbows and wrists?

 

Lets start with question #2 – The short answer is yes, they absolutely make a difference in the vibration dampening department. I’ve read for years how graphite helped numerous players reduce stress on the joints and gain distance. Two things I wasn’t really interested in until my own body started to break down due to the years of sports and physical activity. Now don’t get me wrong, I like distance like everybody else but with irons I’m used to hitting my 7 iron 175yds and don’t really want that to change. I’ve gotten comfortable with my setup, especially wedges, so the last thing I want to do is go back to square one with my bag makeup.

So let’s get to my thoughts in each area and then I’ll answer question #1 which is the BIG ONE.

 

 

**Performance Categories breakdown**

 

 

**Distance**- MMT wins this one

This was a category I didn’t want to see much change. As I said I’m comfortable with my gapping, so I was happy to see that distance is almost identical UNLESS I tried to really step on one. When I tried to really lean into one with my Modus shafts, I feel like I added a lot more spin and didn’t gain distance. Basically, the spin kind of negated the intended result of increase ball speed. With the MMT’s I actually gained about a half club as the spin and flight didn’t change. This was GREAT to see and will help when I’m trying to hit to a back pin. For that reason alone, I’m giving the MMT’s the edge.

 

 

 

**Feel**- MMT wins BIG

What can I say, the feel is amazing. SOOOO much softer than my Modus (and I enjoy the modus). The best way to describe it is the forging almost feels softer. Mishits do as well but you still get the feedback that you didn’t center it. But when you flush a shot, wow. The MMT’s feel more active than steel but they never get lost in the swing. I LOVE that I can go as hard as I can and the MMT’s don’t skip a beat. Some graphite shafts (irons and woods) feel like if you kick it into high gear the shaft can lag and throw feel off completely. MMT’s do NOT have this problem.

 

 

 

**Flight** – Tie

This was a category where I wanted the same performance as my Modus. Modus are outstanding steel shafts and I love that I can flight the ball with zero issues. MMT follow suit and allow me to play any shot I want depending on conditions. I also tested these in the wind and again no complaints. They check this box so moving on.

 

 

 

 

**Spin** - MMT wins again

This is all based on what I’m seeing on a real course hitting into firm greens that are currently running around 11. My club is in peak condition (fall weather) so there is no better time to test irons than now. After multiple rounds and practice sessions (on range and course) I am confident to say these are spinning about the same as my Modus which means, 7 iron -6100-6300 (last time I was on trackman). I probably hit 200 shots into greens with the various irons and almost every single shot was the same distance from it’s ball mark. The reason I give MMT the win in this category is for the reason I stated in distance. When I lean into one (which I almost didn’t even test) I noticed an immediate improvement in distance over my Modus. I know for a fact that the Modus will start to over spin but the MMT stays consistent and accomplishes the intended task of squeezing out another half club. I saw it shot after shot, the MMT is almost exactly a half club longer. Love this as it opens up new shots to me on the course.

 

 

 

**Flex** – Tie

These are true to flex. I’ve tried other 120g+ graphite options and these are maybe the first ones where flex is accurate (IMO). Recoil 125 Proto X were rebar for me, and I was spinning a 7 iron at like 68 rpms. As I said in the podcast, I tend to be on the lower side for spin so I can’t afford really low spin iron shafts. For some that might be what’s needed but for me not so much. So, if you play a DGX100 then get the MMT 125TX. If you play S300 then check out the 105 S. Hopefully they end up making a 120-125 Stiff option. I think if reasonably priced or offered through OEM’s as an upcharge shaft it would be a hit.

Vibration management – MMT’s by a mile

So, I added this category because it was obviously important to me. Needless to say, the difference is night and day between graphite and steel. The drastic reduction is immediately noticeable and over time you can clearly see how this will help prevent and limit the stress to the joints. The cumulative effect from what others told me is exciting. Even on center strikes there is a noticeable improvement over the Modus shafts. Of course, the biggest difference is on mishits, especially thinned shots. You don’t get that stinging vibration that travels into the hands. This makes them a joy to hit and even miss with haha.

 

 

 

**Dispersion** - MMT surprisingly wins

This is the category where I thought I would have to make some compromises. From everything I heard about graphite, dispersion was never a highlight. I usually heard things like “they feel good on the body and distance is great but dispersion isn’t as tight as the steel shafts I was playing.” To be honest I was willing to sacrifice a little to get the joint relief but had my fingers crossed it would be minimal. With that said I was BLOWN away by the results. I was actually seeing consistently tighter dispersion patterns on the course and practice sessions. And it wasn’t just me. A fellow WRX’er and one of the pro’s at my club hit them and said the exact same thing. Both were just as surprised as I was. Bottom line – I went from praying they would be close in performance to actually being an improvement. Consider that box CHECKED

 

 

 

 

 

**So…. Question #1 - Can and will the Mitsubishi MMT’s replace my Modus (steel) shafts ?**

 

**I’ll put it this way, I’m not saying steel is dead but it’s on serious life support. ** The MMT’s are in the bag. In fact, they would be in the bag even if I didn’t have joint issues. I went from being frustrated about having to possibly switch to graphite to being excited about a new chapter in my bag’s progression. I can honestly say they are a game changer for me. Not because I think I’m all of a sudden going to shoot 65 every round but because I can continue to play a game I love and not have to worry about excessive pain and long term impact on my body. So, if that’s not a game changer I don’t know what it is.

 

 

 

Note: When I get new wedges in March I will be dropping a follow up review on the MMT shafts in my 50, 54, and 60* wedges.

A friend of mine has been playing Recoils off and on since they came out. He speaks very highly of them, especially how the graphite took the vibration out of the misses. I'm really really looking forward to that aspect of the MMT's. I also know a few players who use SteelFibers so I have a decent amount of experience with those as well. Overall I've found that liked some of the current offerings but never enough to actually consider making the switch. Interesting to see if the MMT's do the trick.

Looking forward to this review. I just switch to composite iron shafts. They are a few years old and I do not think they are even made anymore. Aldila rip SLT tour 115 shafts. So far, I think I am a convert to graphite. I am interested in a few newer options, including these, the fuji MCI shafts, and a couple others.

 

Composite irons shafts is the future. Just pricey.

I had the same concern as I'm a logo down guy but Mitsubishi did a great job in the graphics department. They look high end but subtle with one side being predominantly black with 2 light silver rings. I'm doing some more pics today so you will see first hand what i'm talking about.

 

 

 

As for everyone else : I'm glad to share the experience. I know a lot of people are in a similar position with joints but also don't want to sacrifice performance, ESPECIALLY with a heavier weighted iron shaft.

As a massive Mitsu fan (I have a motherload of OG white and blueboards in all the weights) I am excited to see this line up and will want to test one for sure.

 

(The KK 1050 TiNi felt great in the new 620mb's)

 

Also a semi-low capper (0.9 to 3.3 this year) with horrific elbow and hand and wrist pain. Being almost 52 hurts !!!!

I'm with ya brother. The aches and pains have really taken a toll on me this year. In fact my right elbow tendon is partially torn so surgery is most likely the only option. I can still play thanks to the Bandit brace but I can't wait to get this healed up over the winter. After that it's all about prevention.

I haven't tried TGI stuff and to be honest I don't have as much interest due to the fact that they don't have experience with graphite. Graphite iron shafts are tricky enough so I feel more confident in companies like Mitsu, UST, Project X who have been working with graphite for a while. The MMT's were the first graphite shafts I was really eager to try as I like the fact that Mitsubishi controls the process from start to finish. I figured (right or wrong) if someone was going to figure out the winning formula it would be them. With that said Recoils are good just lacking in the feel section for me at 125g.

 

I have tried 110g offerings from other companies but the overall weight always gets me. I'm a bigger guy so I like having a little heft in my clubs so i don't lose them during my swing.

I saw it now after I re-read your post haha. Where can I read up on it more? I was getting ready to order a set and then saw your post so I'm waiting for review now :wink:
