Srixon Z585/785 Combo iron set???

klbcec

Recommended Posts

Srixon Z585 (4-6) / Z785 (7-9) combo irons are arriving Friday. Coming from switching back and forth between WIlson FG Tour V4 and Mizuno MP4. When I play the Mizunos, I carry the WIlson 4 iron for help at the low end.

What should I expect with the combo set? Decided I need some help wiith the lower irons.

Thanks for any thoughts you may have.

I thought I would want a z565 4-iron to add confidence, but I've found the z765 4i to be plenty forgiving so I just rolled with it. It plays very similar to the 5i for me. Best long irons I've every played.

I have hit 6 and 7 irons extensively and honestly did not find any difference in forgiveness between 585s and 785s. Maybe in longer irons (4-5) is different though

I have the 565 from 5-pw. My buddy has a split set of the 745 and 545 4-6 and 7-pw. We went out for a spur of the moment 9 and I used his irons. I didnt see a big difference in forgiveness from the 745 to my 565. I assume that with the small tweaks from year to year the 785s are just as easy (if not easier) to hit than the 745.

That being said, for my ball striking capabilities I like the look of a bit more meat behind the ball on the longer irons. It gives me a sense of security that I might not actually need, but it's nice to have.

I think the most important factor is turf interaction. I don’t like wide soles so I wouldn’t combo until the 4i but the 785 is a great iron. You will absolutely love it. I’m going to give the MP20 blades a run but if they don’t work out I’ll be running back to Srixon. My dad is taking my 785 heads. Most accurate and best feeling irons on the market IMO.

MTOYXKL70IUS.jpgI'm an older , slower swing guy in the same combo Z585/Z785 4-6i and 7-pw......as balls_deep said , this set might be better off with 4i z585 only.....I'm hitting z785 portion so very well....kbs tour reg is my shaft....the Z785 has tons of forgiveness as they're more midsized of an iron.....

I'm wondering if the z585 heads as really light in comparison?

Yeah I toed one really bad today and it had no business of being on the green. These things have some serious help. It’s a pretty big head - part of the reason I’m going with blades for now. If I go back this direction it will likely be 4-7 785 and 8-PW Z forged

Those ZForged are a thing of beauty. I have no business hitting them, but they make my mouth water.

Dude. Please stop. It has taken every ounce of my being not to pull the trigger on the ZForged.

If I got the ZForged I'd have to blend my set since I can't go from ZForged to 565. So then I get Zforged 9, pw and 785 9, 8 and then i might as well just top it off with a u85 4i. Or maybe the UHX 4i?

Ugh. It'll be an expensive winter I guess.

I don’t intend to hijack this thread, hopefully it will help the original poster. What handicap index are you are playing to heading these clubs? I’m a 7.8 index and looking for a new set of irons and I like the looks of this combo set. I’m not sure I can handle 785 all the way through the set though. I will say I’m a decent ball striker, but not a great ball striker.

I’m a 10.9 hc, love my 785 4-pw. I planned on the combo set going into the store but truly couldn’t strike the ball well with the 585 to save my life. I came from a set of MP32’s, so I’m certainly more used to the smaller iron at address and perhaps had a mental block. But the 785’s are excellent, even in the long irons, and many people love the slight bump in forgiveness and distance from the 585 long irons. Report back with how you like them!

You'll be fine at that index. They're quite forgiving. The one thing I would say is I'd weaken the 4-9 by a degree or two to tighten the gaps in the scoring clubs. The 4 iron looks weirdly strong from address if that makes sense so I think for golfers that struggle to elevate the ball it might not inspire confidence. I generally hit the ball a bit too high so I love them. As I said before, the club head is actually "oversized" in my mind for this type of players CB and I think depending on the player even a 15 could comfortably play the whole set.

I have been playing 4-5 585/6-P 785 combo set for a year. Coming from playing MP-60, 32 and 59. Felt like I would need help with higher irons as father time is catching up with me.. I do find that the 585 does seem to be a bit more forgiving, travel farther, and have a different feel - still solid and soft like 785's, but feels like there's more meat in the contact. In hindsight I could have gone down to 6 I with the 585. Every bit as smooth as the Mizuno's but more forgiving and turf interaction is much better. You won't regret your purchase.

I'm a +1 40yr old who still swings it fast and I went 585 in the 4i and 5i then 785 6-pw. I have played several i series irons in the past but thought the 585's are more game improvement than those. Let me tell you that the 585's are amazing. Maybe it's the v-sole that sets them apart from other larger bigger soled game improvement irons but these things are just point and shoot as good as it gets. Still think they look and feel extremely good and you can basically hit it anywhere on the face and it still produces a consistent result. You're borderline foolish if you dont play these in the long irons regardless of ability level.

Just look in Lowry's bag..

I will tell you....I switched to Srixon this season and started with a 545/745 combo splitting after the 6iron and I have never hit better 5 and 6 irons in my life. Distance, height, dispersion, feel...it has all been great. I have been a long time Callaway user and don't change irons much -- X14 then CF16 and I am sticking with Srixon. I actually think I like the look of the 545/745 best, but have the 585/785 too.

Thank you for all the responses! Looking forward to receiving these irons. I was concerned about where to split. Figured I would try the stock configuration, and if I felt I wanted more control in the 6 iron, I would just order the single iron.

Got the NM 105 shafts in stiff. Hope they come in with consistent flex.

I have a z585 5 iron that goes in and out of the bag, depending on how many wedges I want at any given time. I usually pull my "4" hybrid out when I do that, to make room for the extra wedge. I get enough extra distance with it to be a nice fit between my 6 iron and 3 hybrid. It's been really easy to hit, and I should probably just leave it in the bag all the time. I haven't had any issue with the wider sole, which is a little surprising.
